Is Crunchyroll compromised? I don't want the CIA knowing what anime I watch.
Okay so I am in a computer hardware class at college and I have to read this chapter for my midterm tomorrow, and as I am reading I ran across the sentence in the picture I am including. It made me pause for a moment, as I had never heard of "Elixir Memory" before (admittedly I'm a bit new to working on computer hardware) so I did a google search and got some general info and people saying it was generic crap, so my question is if it's as generic and shitty as the sources I found claim, why would the book print that it will give the "best results"? Also, whats your opinions on an A+ Certification textbook basically sponsoring a computer part company? It irritates me because if someone takes the sentence at face value their going to assume that any other brand of memory is inferior.
>he doesn't buy exclusively Elixir memory
>he's not even aware of it
You're like a little baby
>>59294715
Could you please explain it then?
Cause I am ridiculously lost.
It says "you need to also match the manufacturer", so maybe Elixir memory isn't the best in general terms, but it's the one most compatible with the other hardware in the setup?

You mean macOS?
What OS should we use then?
This is a quality thread! May we please have another?

Okay so I'm trying to fix someone's laptop; it seems whoever opened it before me rounded/stripped two of the three main screws to even open the back case.
Do any anons have advice on how to remove them?
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Remove+a+Stripped+Screw/13213
yeah. first thing to try is to take a rubber band, and put it between the screwdriver and the screw. might give you enough grip to break it free. after that, you could try driving a torx screwdriver into it, or file a cut across the head and use a flathead screwdriver to get it out.

Thanks for the quick replies, you anons are angels. I'll give it it a go now if not i give up on it tonight and sleep
Hey /g/,
I want a career in the IT field, but don't want to do any studying or learning. Need like $20 an hour. Where do I start?

How do I start contributing to open source projects? I only have ~2 years of experience with programming past my 3-year long education so I don't yet feel like I should contribute to large projects like Linux, Firefox etc. Could I do mpv and similar or should I start with even smaller projects?
>>59293421
Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.
>>59293421
I recently did my first open source work with Docker.
The reason why was because a feature was broken. It seemed trivial to fix, so I focused on just understanding enough to fix it.
I would recommend adding a feature to or fixing a problem with something you use daily. A lot of projects have bugs that are marked as good for beginners. Those are obviously great places to start. Don't worry about understanding the entire codebase and what it does.
>>59293421
Just do what you can. If there's a bug in some open source software you use, try to fix it. Some projects triage issues as "easy" or "introductory", you could try those too. Everyone always needs documentation and tests written, people would be grateful for that and it is generally low effort but boring.
A friend and I are looking for auto dialing/progressive dialing software compatible with Mac or iphones! Any ideas, /g/entlemen?

Now that the top of like processors are coming out, will laptops finally become a bit cheaper? Or go on sale?
Doubt it. I swear there is far more price fixing and shady shit in the computer industry than a reasonable person might think.

Bump
If I had to set up a network for users to communicate through voice and messaging what would the most efficient and secure way be?
WiFi with Open source software?
Ad Hoc Network?
I was thinking of some sort of software that would broadcast an ID not in use in the network to the closest router which data can be routed to if someone calls the ID.
The ID can be changed whenever the user wants to.
Would custom hardware be needed? Or can it run on 5 GHz wireless without interference?
You're talking about mesh. CJDNS over BATMAN
