Is it worth it?
you know ur just gonna buy them and get them all imported and organized into ur calibre library. then ur gonna spend a few hours reading reviews about which on you should read first. then you may finish half of the first chapter and never think about them again until you fall into the same trap

If you want help:
>Assemble parts list

>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>A10 9700 - poverty-tier builds (no dGPU)
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming
GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now
RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM
General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor
Fuck miners

a fag built this
I strapped a 120 mm fan onto my 970gtx since the ball bearings on the old fan gave out and it made annoying noises.
The GPU temp now rises to 85°C. Is this still ok?
I didn't see one of these on the first many pages, so I figured I'd start one up.
>First PC buildd a couple weeks back
>Everything's fine, super fast
>Try to unzip file
>Snail speed
Am I missing something? I realized I forgot the audio driver, so I'm installing that now. But it's taking 15-20 minutes to do something my much less powerful laptop could do in < 5. Is there some compression driver I need to install to bump this up, or what gives?

What processor do you have? No one can help you without details
I want a dedicated >gayming server for some friends and I, and I'm contemplating going for an LGA1366 motherboard & X5650.
Would it be better to just get an i7 Dell optiplex to use as a dedicated machine for that? Do the 2 cores matter for hosting a >gayming server?
Also, does the core count matter much for my own dedicated storage box attached over the network? It'll be only me that uses it, so would there be a benefit in using something like an i7 optiplex for that too?
Is the desktop on windows just a fullscreen file explorer window with background image?
Mac:
>accidentally click a window other than the current active one at the front
>switches focus to that window and nothing else
Windows:
>accidentally click a window other than the current active one at the front
>switches focus AND registers the click inside the window's UI simultaneously
Explain this bullshit Currysoft.
Maybe i dont wanna accidentally click sometging i dont want to. I first want to see the entire screen of a program
we don't make mistakes
Pretty sure it depends on the program. For example, in Office it will only change focus and not register the click.
I set up my home server with ddns so it's doing apache and ssh
Only thing is my fail2ban is working overtime banning Chinese ip's off ssh
is this just a normal thing for servers with ssh open or is it because I have a xiaomi phone and mi wfi repeaters?
As soon as port 22 is open to the WAN either a chink or Russian bot is going to hammer it. Either geo-ban China or stop using password authentication for SSH.
>>62216894
this. anybody with internet facing password authentication is asking for rectal distress these days
Yeah that's pretty much normal. You can run SSH on a weird port to cut down the volume, but it'll still happen. Also if you disable password auth completely and only accept public-key then some portion of the bots will just throw up their hands and go away.
Hey /g/ just ordered this. Did I do good?
she's laughing at you for a reason
>>62216798
nah she looks ugly and old
next time, order one from russian. they're young and beautiful.
There is no way the retail price is 900$. How is this allowed?
Let's talk about ChromeOS.
/g/ seems to hate it, and I don't understand why.
For an ultraportable, I don't see how it couldn't be the best OS.
Compare the Pixel to the Macbook.
-Pixel has an i5, Mac has an M3.
-Both have high res screens.
-Pixel has a touchscreen.
-Pixel can run a Linux distro on the same kernel (Crouton)
-Pixel has better build quality
-Mac has way better battery life
Now onto my point. If you bought the Macbook, what would you do on it? You sure as hell are not gonna be doing anything intensive. The Chromebook with the i5 and Linux is arguably more productive than MacOS with an M3.
ChromeOS scales better with high DPI, it runs a shit ton faster, and it's safer than MacOS. So why are people hating on it over MacOS?
ChromeOS also supports native apps just like MacOS, there aren't many but there are offline apps that are not based on a web wrapper.
dont they have like only 32gb storage?

Hey /g/
Looking to buy a 60hz monitor for my PS4. Having trouble deciding between an IPS and TN panel. Is there a noticeable difference between a 1ms and and 5ms response time if it's only 60hz?
https://reactos.org/project-news/reactos-046-released
Many bugs were fixed. Some of them have to do with filesystem corruption and dual booting other are just user experience fixes. There is also support for more hardware.
What it can do:
Skyrim
Office 2010
minecraft
Spriteart(rom hacking and professional)
Half life 2
Emulation(n64,PS1,GBA,DS,etc.)
The iso is tiny, you can try it on a virtual machine.
can I use it as a daily driver?
Neat.
>>62216623
It has picked up a lot of speed but it is still alpha.
There is still no updater and stability is shit.
>He torrents movies <5GB in size

Pick your poison /g/.
All I know is the European keyboard sucks.
Why does that right option even exist? It is horrible by any standard. I have rejected laptops for the sole reason of having such a keyboard.
I've been looking for a decent keyboard with the "bigass" enter key, preferably with ANSI-like layout.
Any good stores in yuropoor union?

It's a actually pretty nice that you are doing it. But will it ever take off? Especially when the source code is quite old and "modern web" is getting more and more shitty.
