I have a HP MicroServer N40L, but desu its overkill AF and pretty big. If I was going to buy another one I would just get a small NAS or a micro case.

I am literally just using a laptop right now as a home "server" I need a lot more disk space though.

Does anyone have advice on how to set up firefox so it runs faster on older/slower computers?
I recently got this laptop for cheap and it's pretty good, but firefox is noticeably laggy on it.

I searched google for a bit but the results are polluted with shitty clickbait articles completely devoid of useful information.

I did find something about optimising firefox for SSDs which involved changing browser.sessionstore.interval to a higher value, which I've done, and I also changed other options like max_tabs_undo to much lower values. What else can I do?

I already have netsurf installed which I use for most sites, but it's pretty limited so I still need firefox sometimes. For example, to post on 4chan. That doesn't seem to be possible from netsurf.

This isn’t just your browsing history or cookies. It’s geolocation data, financial info, passwords, health info, even your Social Security Number. Anything you do, any data you enter, any online video you watch, any email you write. Your ISP could store it all and sell it for their own profit if Congress throws out the FCC rulings.

Only if they MITM all their customers. Not too unlikely though given that some American ISPs already do DNS hijacking.

My Computer Engineering Teacher just said in class that Mozzila is safer than Chrome. Is that correct?
31 posts and 5 images submitted.

Yes. chrome is the better browser generally but firefox has special code that makes it less intrusive on your data.
>>
in the sense that your privacy isn't being violated as badly, yeah. but chrome is supposedly less exploitable

This is a PSA for all actual /g/entoomen on this board: If you want FF to not be slow pile of shit, compile it with the "hwaccel" USE flag, and enabling the "system-jpeg" USE flag will allow thumbnails for all images including jpg in firefox filepicker.

The action comes after Symantec was found to have misissued 30,000 SSL certs and did nothing to ensure there won't be further issuance.

Extended Validation (green bar) will be turned off for EV certs issued by Symantec in the next release.

The validity period (from issuance) for Symantec certs will decrease with each Chrome release from now on from 33 months to 9 months max.

do people really are this stupid resource eating bloaty piece of shit which datamines you and instead of securing your system adds even more 0 day holes
are you this stupid people?
>>
>>59543258
This has nothing to do with their "anti-virus" business.

Symantec owns Verisign and Thawte, controlling about 15% of the SSL cert market.
>>
This is enormous. 15% of the market is understating it quite a bit.

Verisign own GeoTrust, Symantec, and Thawte. That's quite a lot of the commercial certificates out there which will rapidly become untrusted as to EV and will be phased out due to - well, they fucked up. There was widespread misissuance, and evidence (via Certificate Transparency - thanks, Adam and Ryan!) has been found of it.

Verisign are also the custodians for the .COM and .NET domains from ICANN, and have been since their inception. ICANN need to be informed of an irregularity of this enormity.

Is this a good laptop to learn development on? I want to get a machine and install Ubuntu on it. Going to start with Java and use it for my development learning needs only, no gaming, lite web stuff.

Also if I get this, is the i7 worth it over the i5? I will prolly throw in an SSD and max it at 16 GB of RAM. Looking to keep everything at or under $400. Thanks!

>>
>>59542490

i have an L460 and ubuntu on it. 8 gigs ram. you probably wont need 16gb and an i7 unless the java IDE's take up like 5-6 GB of ram. but I use my machine more for "managing servers", not development, so your mileage might vary.

laptop doesn't really matter though. try to learn shell scripting asap - really useful.

Do you think Microsoft will go third-party software only in regards in mobile market and halt all development of Windows Phone, just like Sega pulled out of console market and became a third-party after struggling with Dreamcast, any time soon - instead of making Surface Phone happening?

A better comparison would be to Blackberry. And yeah I think WP is kill, they fucked up early and never seemed to catch on with the normies
>>
No. They got x86 emulation working and that will become the Windows phone's biggest selling point. You'll be able to run legacy Windows applications from your phone. Business people will love it.
>>
>>59542470
Protip: windows phone is kill (for now)
The x86 emulator will be used on laptop and desktop in a few years when MS will switch to ARM
