I just got a 250 GB ssd and would like to subtitute two 160GB HDD's with this new one.
The thing is that the manufacturer's clone software won't see the Ubuntu partition, so I'm left with using Clonezilla or something similar.
Have any of you guys some experience with this? I don't know where to start. Partitions are filled at about 50% so the used space is well under the SSD 250GB limit.
My major concern is not screwing up the boot info. I would most likely have to edit GRUB afterwards but as long as I can boot up again into Ubuntu that doesn't worry me too much.

"Cloning" would have to include the empty space, so no, you can't clone this shit.
Just install on the new drive and copy your data.
>>59584277
do this, just use gparted or whatever to shrink and copy the partitions.
Now my ISP can sell my data and continue to offer plans with ratios like these! Thanks!

hey /g/.
I've been a windows guy since XP sp1 and have stuck with microsoft through thick and thing.... but after using windows 10 for the past year... I've had it.
the amount of shit you have to go through with regedit, group policies, etc. to cut down on it's spying is ridiculous. The OS has all kinds of problems. Right now I'm stuck with the ntoskrnl using up 50% of my CPU. I hate the automatic updates, the constant data stealing/sharing/etc that all goes on without my permission... and keep up on it all, and trying to "optimize" this fucking operating system has me clawing at my own face in frustration.
I'm not a computer "expert" or programmer, but I'm really considering switching to linux. In the old days (yeah I'm a bit old) linux was something only used by the pros and people like me couldn't make heads or tales of it.
I've looked up some info and I'm told that current linux systems are much more user friendly, but I still feel intimidated by making the switch.
"Mint" with "cinnamon" interface was suggested to me as a good way for an old windows guy like me to get started. what is your opinion on this? I've also been reading that running windows based games etc. is no longer too big of a hassle with things like "wine" making it fairly easy and pretty stable.
I plan to run it on an older laptop with an AMD A4-5150 APU radeon HD (one of those intergrated graphics cpu thingys). As I understand it, drivers can be tough to get straightened out, so I'm prepared for some butthurt in that arena.
anyway.... I feel like making the switch would, at the very least, be an entertaining learning experience, but.... being that this is my only pc.... I ask you guys.... should I be intimidated by this thing, or is it not as bad as I think?
>this is NOT asking for personal tech support
>just asking general advice/thoughts/experiences with switching to linux as a long time windows user
Try it out in a virtual machine first. If you have the time I would also check out Kubuntu and Xubuntu.
If you are looking to use wine you probably want to take a look over at https://www.wine-staging.com/. (That will let you run like biweekly builds of wine instead of the outdated version that is in your default repositories)

Why not just buy a cheap possibly last gen mac book, upgrade the storage and install windows through bootcamp? You get both Win and OSX and for a college setting macs are pretty desirable. Windows would help keep projects universal in accessibility and mac could be useful for some simple word functions and taking quick notes. Talk me out of it /g/ and give reasons beside for

Not too familiar with Macbooks, but if the hard drive is large enough, why not go the full hog and triple-boot w/ Ubuntu?
>>59582911
There is no way to justify the tied down OSX. Even Ubuntu dualboot is tenfolds better for the task.

FUCK NO
The motherboards will have issues for a good few more weeks if not months at least,
If you don't require the cpu now/in the next year, yea, ryzen + will be better for you to wait for and by then motherboards should be sorted along with well stocked, possibly better ones to boot.
Right now the taichi is literally the best board you can get, and it will not be in stock for a long fuckin time.

Not only are you too young to realize you're not supposed to be taking all this "meme" crap seriously, you're also using your computer to advertise your particular brand of underaged autism to the world. Probably in the sad and lonely hope of finding other kids who are desperate to fit in and take the Internet way too seriously.

I've been wondering if Seagates are really that bad since I have a 4TB Seagate and it's been holding up real well for the past couple of months since I bought it. I don't know if the memes are true and I want to be sure, just so I can get another hard drive to replace it. If they are true, what brand should I replace my HDD with?
stop posting girls (boys) pls
>>59579730
I've had a data center running for nine years now. I have 1-2 seagate drives fail every month, they come installed from the OEM. I replace them with HGST drives, and I originally outfitted our Storage Array with HGST Drives. I've only had one HGST fail and that was because the fan cooling it died and the server didn't alert us. There is something wrong with Seagate drives. Sure, their warranty is just as good as HGST, but that warranty won't cover data loss or down time. For my money, I'll never use anything but a Hitachi.
