I've been thinking about this recently and figured it might be interesting to make a thread on it. How do the expectations you had of the future of hardware and software trends 10 years ago compare to what actually has happened over the past 10 years? How close was your idea of the future to reality? Are you happy with how things turned out?
where's my flying car
>>59709302
I realised a few weeks back that i would be doing just fine on my first computer that had a core 2 duo, Radeon HD 7850 2GB and 4 GB of ram.
Fuckings gaming meme ruined everything.
>>59709302
10 years ago I was a dumb child who didn't tough much of the future, so I just imagined a very generic flying cars and computers everywhere and lots of tall buildings.
Now I think that the future won't be too different from today. Maybe (god forbid) smart houses will become a thing, and we will have a bit more buildings in some countries, tho not in the average american country. But society will be largely the same shit it's been for 2000 years, flying cars won't become a thing, not on Earth at any rate, maybe in colonies in other planets, which I do believe will happen.
Computers will keep getting faster, silicon will be replaced by something else, Windows will most likely be replaced by other OS (possibly Android) as the dominant OS, code will keep getting shittier, so the increases in power won't actually equate to faster usage experience, we might or might not see a game market crash, or the industry will just keep growing stale forever like the movies industry. I don't believe people will ever accept computers inside their bodies, and I don't think we'll see a situation where you need to "upgrade" yourself to be competitive because there will likely be government regulations in most countries to avoid this.
And at some point the iron grip of the NATO over the world will have to break because some of the major players will collapse, and we'll probably have another "dark age" which in reality will mean that the world will keep progressing, but slower, and we might see more wars, but nothing apocalyptic, and in 1000 years some other faggot on 12chan or whatever will be making a thread just like this.
Why are you wasting your time ricing/maintaining Linux when you could be doing something productive?
>>59709129
>[GTK3] in newline
Why u do dis
>>59709129
>Why are you wasting your time ricing
I'm not. I riced it a year ago and I like the way it looks so haven't changed it since.
>maintaining
sudo pacman -Syu every other day
never broke anything, just works. what's the problem
>>59709129
Because it's literally the only thing that I'm capable of doing.
Which Mono/Sans/Serif fonts do /g/ use?
consolas bc too lazy to google a font and download and install it
>>59708973
Inconsolata, Consolas and Source code pro. The Ubuntu fonts are quite nice also.
>>59708973
>Mono
Consolas, Source Code Pro.
>Sans
Source Sans Pro, Fira Sans, Montserrat.
>Serf
Source Serif Pro.
what went wrong?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-jYDRd_53w
Nothing. Good phone in my opinion.
>>59708886
I used to work there. Basically the guys running the show fell out of touch with the trends that google and apple were setting. Also, outsourcing. If you're not manufacturing and designing phones like samesung is in China, you can't compete.
>>59708886
why is there a negro in the video?

Fuck you /g/... you did this to me
>>59708833
Follow a libreoffice tutorial
>libreoffice
>>59708844
They don't exist because everyone uses Excel due to it being developed by an actual professional company.
> There appear to be some concerns that Linux Mint neglects security related issues, and made some design decisions that make keeping on top of security issues harder than comparable major Linux distributions do.
Personally, I’m not familiar enough with Mint to judge whether the conclusions in the article Paul cites are fully justified, but the issues mentioned are serious enough that I wouldn’t, at the moment, consider it for anything but a personal toy/experimental system.

what a surprise, need i remind you it was made by the same company as android?
I am bit conflicted on this. Had 13'3 Air and got 12 rMB afterwards and while it's better at basically everything at times I do miss a bigger screen even though the resolution is almost doubled. Also the Air looks better when it's open on the table while rMB looks "too small".
Though obviously anything bigger and heavier than Air would be fucking ridiculous. It's supposed to be a PORTABLE computer not a smaller desktop.
I'd get Xubuntu on it and use Opera.
>we live in dystopian cyberpunk future were government spies on you
through your phone, computer, even fucking tv and can kill you using your car

I don't get it?Normies are ok with wasting billion of dollars on millitary "cuz it gon help us fight ebil dictators in country full of brown people that threaten our freedumbs" but yet don't give a shit they themself live authoritarian fachist shithole with no privacy and freedom!

What has been the case for about 100 years.
What is new is that the general population can return the favour.
Is lua a good programming language or is it just a meme?
I'm new to programming, should I start with Lua?
>>59708565
It really depends on what you intend to use it for.
If you want to script things for existing games or programs, then go for it.
If you want to make your own applications or games from the ground up, then you should pick between C++, C# or Java.
If you want to make websites, go for JavaScript and PHP.
>>59708825
it can't be used for lightweight standalone programs or apps? only games?
If you are really new you should start with popular language like java, c#, python or c++
Why aren't you a designer, /g/?
>get to live the normie life

The global workforce doesn't need more liberal arts majors.
> designer
you mean like a meche or a just drawing shit for others to create?

How do i stop failing my CS classes /g/? I just wanna get a good job

Hey /g/, im looking to buy some desktop stand alone speakers. I have a budget of around 100 Can, but for the right pair, i can move a bit. Any ideas? So far i was looking at the CreativeT15 or CreativeT20
>>59708221
The edifier 1280 are a little bit more than your budget but seem like a good deal. Powered monitor with 4-inch woofers for 125 is decent
Buy a Lepy lp-2020a+ and spend the rest on a set of used passive bookshelf speakers. Cheap computer speakers are never not shit.
>>59708245
>>59708275
Im looking for more something that can sit on either side of my monitor. Sub woof isnt important. A bit of punch would be nice though
With the release of APFS, will macOS officially be flawless?
Maybe. Shame apple doesn't seem to give a fuck about anything mac anymore and is focused on gimmick trash instead of actual improvements.
>APFS
Not even close to being 'released' yet, root filesystem is still HFS+ and you can only format volumes APFS in bash. Still making better progress than ReFS which I haven't heard anything from MS about in years.

How would the top trackers prevent this from happening? What would a poo loo do?
I'm 2 years into my CS degree and I will begin a series of rigorous internships this summer.
I come to ask /g/ for some insight on what the industry looks for in a CS grad?
How does one reach the higher spectrum of payment in this field?
How does one enter a company that will pay their masters for them?
How do people treat computer scientists in the work place? How do regular co-workers see them?
What can you do other than internships to be in demand with companies?
Which companies should I be looking for?
What skills are the highest in demand?
Sorry if I'm all over the place with these questions. My mind is just spinning because I am barely beginning to research the industry. If anyone has experience please post your knowledge ITT.
I guess I can bump with anime girls.
Nobody on g actually has a degreeee nevermind a job.
