I'm scared as fuck /g/

I've never owned a laptop and I'm asking you guys for advice.

I'm going to leave my country and I'm not able to bring my desktop pc to where I'm going.. Are thinkpads memes? What can you guys recommend me ?

I have a 500 dollar budget and I can take the ssd from my pc to put it in the laptop I guess.

My advice is do not buy a laptop. Just buy a desktop when you get to your new country
>>
>>59793026
Why are you scared?
Thinkpads are a bit overhyped here but used ones are cheap and good for the money. Depending on your mobility needs you could get a x220 or x230 + dock, external display and kb/mouse for home use and a very portable laptop on the go or you can get a w520/t420 and have a nice, big screen.
>>
>>59793046
This.
Take your current drive if you need the data.
Laptops are for people that need to do things in different places often and can do so with sub-par performance.

But yes. Thinkpads are a meme, a good one. Get one if you must, or any other secondhand laptop that takes your fancy. Really you're not asking about hardware so anything that's somewhat modern will do.

>I'm scared as fuck
If you're fleeing a country you should consider taking up arms and not being a pussy pushing all your problems onto the rest of us. We're not going to solve them for you
willingly
Give me a funny story of how you see this shit working
>2025
>everyone is finally wearing AR glasses
>you see kids playing yugioh on a table
>the glasses have been figured out real easy and used on dash board computers for cars and shit
>you're wearing a pair of glasses
>people can print out specific codes that only the AR glasses can see
>you're walking down the street a scary ass clown pops out of the street lamp and scares the shit out of you
>you fall back like an anime character freaking out
>you're walking down the street
>codes everywhere
>fucking assholes causing pop ups AS you're walking
>"COME TO JOE'S CRAB SHACK!/SUCKY SUCKY 5 DOLLAH!"
>POP UPS
>POP UPS EVERYWHERE!
>get "AR AD Block on whatever fucking store there is"
>be on plane
>you see some teenager using it
>peer just enough to see porn
>kid's giggling the whole time
>his mom's not even caring
>2 old people playing chess

I see this being more used on yugioh if they are smart

Hey peeps, I'm terrible with computers and need help.

I get this weird message multiple times out of no where, and it's happening more frequently.

When this message occurs my D drive shuts down and disappears. I then have to restart the computer for it to work again. Sometimes I have to restart multiple times.

And sometimes, when I restart, the computer won't even start. Just stays in the boot screen and I have to keep restarting till it finally boots completely.

What is happening?

>>59792252
It's a message from a C# .net program that crashes because it can't write a log entry to a log file.
It's an effect of the drive not working and not the cause of the drive not working.
Tighten your cables and check your hard drive disks SMART status. Your drive is probably dying.
>>
>>59792271
It's a laptop, no cables.
Two years old.

So there's nothing I can do at all?

Master Foo once said to a visiting programmer: “There is more Unix-nature in one line of shell script than there is in ten thousand lines of C.”

The programmer, who was very proud of his mastery of C, said: “How can this be? C is the language in which the very kernel of Unix is implemented!”

Master Foo replied: “That is so. Nevertheless, there is more Unix-nature in one line of shell script than there is in ten thousand lines of C.”

The programmer grew distressed. “But through the C language we experience the enlightenment of the Patriarch Ritchie! We become as one with the operating system and the machine, reaping matchless performance!”

Master Foo replied: “All that you say is true. But there is still more Unix-nature in one line of shell script than there is in ten thousand lines of C.”

The programmer scoffed at Master Foo and rose to depart. But Master Foo nodded to his student Nubi, who wrote a line of shell script on a nearby whiteboard, and said: “Master programmer, consider this pipeline. Implemented in pure C, would it not span ten thousand lines?”

The programmer muttered through his beard, contemplating what Nubi had written. Finally he agreed that it was so.

“And how many hours would you require to implement and debug that C program?” asked Nubi.

“Many,” admitted the visiting programmer. “But only a fool would spend the time to do that when so many more worthy tasks await him.”

“And who better understands the Unix-nature?” Master Foo asked. “Is it he who writes the ten thousand lines, or he who, perceiving the emptiness of the task, gains merit by not coding?”

Upon hearing this, the programmer was enlightened.

Master Foo and the Script Kiddie

A stranger from the land of Woot came to Master Foo as he was eating the morning meal with his students.

“I hear y00 are very l33t,” he said. “Pl33z teach m3 all y00 know.”

Master Foo's students looked at each other, confused by the stranger's barbarous language. Master Foo just smiled and replied: “You wish to learn the Way of Unix?”

“I want to b3 a wizard hax0r,” the stranger replied, “and 0wn ever3one's b0xen.”

“I do not teach that Way,” replied Master Foo.

The stranger grew agitated. “D00d, y00 r nothing but a p0ser,” he said. “If y00 n00 anything, y00 wud t33ch m3.”

“There is a path,” said Master Foo, “that might bring you to wisdom.” The master scribbled an IP address on a piece of paper. “Cracking this box should pose you little difficulty, as its guardians are incompetent. Return and tell me what you find.”

The stranger bowed and left. Master Foo finished his meal.

Days passed, then months. The stranger was forgotten.

Years later, the stranger from the land of Woot returned.

“Damn you!” he said, “I cracked that box, and it was easy like you said. But I got busted by the FBI and thrown in jail.”

“Good,” said Master Foo. “You are ready for the next lesson.” He scribbled an IP address on another piece of paper and handed it to the stranger.

“Are you crazy?” the stranger yelled. “After what I've been through, I'm never going to break into a computer again!”

Master Foo smiled. “Here,” he said, “is the beginning of wisdom.”

On hearing this, the stranger was enlightened.

So, my father uses to watch movies on his old Sony KDL40NX.
The tv is a piece of shit and wont play any kind of video format trough USB except 3gp or MOV files, so my dad still burns his pirated movies onto dvds to play them.

I want to buy him something so he can easily watch any kind of files but Android boxes look like china trash and chromecast wont support AVI and AC3 which most of the movies my dad download are coded with. What to do?

If you pay for a VPN that

>doesn't offer connectivity using standard protocols native to a modern OS (e.g. IKEv2 or L2TP/IPSec)
>requires installing and running third-party client software, or
>uses a public shared secret for L2TP/IPSec authentication

then congratulations, you wasted your money to be lulled into a false sense of security. Enjoy your MITM.

I have an Asus Crosshair VI, and a spare AM3 backplate.
Can I just slap the backplate on, and put my AM3 watercooler on it, or do I have to worry about specific mounting pressures?

What programs are good for making gifs/webms?

So far I'm being told that WebMCam, WebMConverter, and ffmpeg are good options.

Which of those are the best/easiest?
>>
>>59790325
ffmpeg is my choice.
WebMConverter (AKA. WebM for retards) is really nice for quickly getting the job done.
They all end up using ffmpeg as the backend, so it's more about what user interface you want to use.

What kind of performance increase would I get from going to a i7 3770? Will the ivy still be viable for a year or two more? Not ready for an upgrade to DDR4 yet and outgrowing pc gaming.

going rate is $150-160 BIN on ebay
going rate of 3550 is ~$70
So after fees and shipping I'm looking at $100
If I can max multi and run the same bclk as current it will be 4.45/2c,4.25/4c another 5% in clock,
http://valid.x86.fr/bench/e5h92j/4
assuming direct scaling
1924/1c
7182/4c
unknown multi core?

tl;dr $100,Why not?

>>
>>59789228
I did anon, my old sandy board has no bclk strap or multicore enhancement so the most I could get would prob be the 104.3 stable bclk I can reach now, Ivy based 1270v2 is around the same price as a 3770 non k last time I looked. Thanks though.
