What's /g/'s take on this?
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-pluto-project-security-computer/#/
>The Pluto Project is a computer monitor that's designed to keep your information private. Based on a concept originally posted on Hackaday here, the Pluto Project uses the polarized film that's already used by LCD screens to keep your information safe. By removing the front polarizing film from an LCD monitor and placing it in a pair of glasses, only the wearer of the glasses can see the information on the screen. Anyone not wearing polarized glasses will only see a blank, white screen.

What's preventing a CIA nigger from just putting on those same glasses and being able to see everything? When agencies can remotely access your CPU directly, who fucking cares if nobody in your immediate vicinity (assuming they don't have glasses) can see you fapping to tech gore threads? How is this not just some easily overcome novelty?

>We spent hours thinking of a good name for this project
rly makes u think

They don't even seem to have much faith in their own project, thinking it's just a racket (it is) to fund their other projects.
>Our plan is to use the profits generated from Pluto to fund the development of these planned products and services.
I don't even want to know what other useless projects they have.

Shit. This turned into a blogpost.

Pointless tech crowdfunding campaigns general?

Installing /g/entoo now. Is it good for Web-Browsing? Gentoo thread.
33 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Gentoo is good for anything, really
>>
Yes. It's good for a lot of things, but it's almost perfect for web-browsing. If you wanted to, you could install a very minimal system that only had a twm and a web browser. Make sure to get whatever packages you need for flash and whatnot, if that's wanted
>>
unless you have a constraint that necessitates using gentoo (no systemd, fringe hardware needs) it's kind of pointless
there are minimal distros that don't take nearly the amount of work to get running and to maintain that will meet desktop and laptop use without any problems
that said, i loved running gentoo and the configurability is a lot of fun if you have the time

I can't connect to my server running mpd using MPDroid. These are the iptables rules I have:
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dport 6600,8000 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m multiport --sport 6600,8000 -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

Here's the mpd.conf:
music_directory "/Storage/Music" # permissions 774 mpd:audio
user "mpd"
#bind_to_address "localhost"
#port "6600"
audio_output {
type "httpd"
name "My HTTP Stream"
encoder "vorbis" # optional, vorbis or lame
port "8000"
# bind_to_address "0.0.0.0" # optional, IPv4 or IPv6
quality "5.0" # do not define if bitrate is defined
# bitrate "128" # do not define if quality is defined
format "44100:16:1"
max_clients "0" # optional 0=no limit
}

Output of netstat:
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 9881/mpd

Output of 'netcat localhost/ip' is "OK" for port 6600, but simply abruptly closes on port 8000.

What am I missing?

The GPL is against any kind of private property concept.
>inb4 post-scarcity meme
Software starts with an idea but it's the implementation of that idea that matters, therefore it's the work involved creating and testing said software where the value is.
I own the fruits of my work, I don't have to give it away if I don't desire so.
56 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>60178230
Intangible property isn't property at all. The GPL is just a hack to work around the boneheaded and backwards concept known as copyright.

If you don't want anyone else using your ideas, don't tell them to anyone else.
>>
>>60178314
As I said it's not about ideas but actual work done using that idea as a base to achieve a goal (algorithms, software design, etc are all ideas but the implementation, time consumed, testing are scarce)
>>
>>60178402
I don't think anyone disputes that you can charge for your labor. It's just that there's no reason you should retain control of the results of it after its completed, because the thing you created isn't scarce. A mathematician can calculate pi, expending labor in the process, and he might do that on a work-for-hire basis on the payment of someone who wants to know what pi is, but neither he nor his employer (if any) then gets ownership of the combination of digits "3.14159..."

Alright so I just did a fresh install of debian 8 and this is the process I had to go through to install the IDLE for Python 3.4:

- try to download and install idle-python3.4 package
- get told I need python3-tk package
- try to download and install python3-tk package
- get told I need blt_2.5.3 package
- try to download and install blt_2.5.3 package
- get told I need tk8.6 package
- try to download and install tk8.6 package
- Success!
- Do all of the above in reverse order

Is this how it's going to be for every package I try to install? Is there an easier way?

Is this router any good?

My current router is a talk talk hg633 which is terrible, WiFi keeps disconnecting and it has errors sending packets over WiFi, I want a new cheap router that will give constant stable WiFi and ethernet. I don't really want gigabit since I don't have a home server

My download and upload speed is around 72down and 20-30 up but over WiFi I only get 1-2 down and 0.5 up

Will this router be any better than my current one? There will be about 15-20 devices connected at a time streaming various things, it needs to be able to deliver constant stable WiFi so I can stream 1440p and 1080p

>>60177336
dunno about that, I use a asus rt-n18u which can do gigabit routing and has an okay wifi (I live on the first floor, can still get a signal on the ground floor through a steel/concrete wall). works with Tomato.

but I think the n18u is a cheapo europe only model. it's certainly worth its price.
>>
nah mane, get the rt-ac68u and install Merlin firmware
>>
I used to have the old shit sky router and swapped it with this and it was pretty nice but had to get rid of it because wanted gigabit but for what you want it for it should be fine. Nice having a USB on the back too.

Does anyone know what is this green gunk coming out of the mouse scroll wheel? I'm buying a new one, I just want to know what the hell is that stuff.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Dirt and grim from your finger. Rubber spinwheels scrape the dirt, oil and sweat from your finger and it collects in the well under the wheel. That shit builds up. Especially if you use those types of mice for long periods of time everyday or if its a communal (shared) mouse. Same gunk builds up on concole controllers (thumb sticks and triggers) and in the seams of your steering wheel
>>
Install gentoo.
>>
>>60177699
that would be black not green. that's the dielectric scrolling medium, which means his bearing is ruptured.

op, it's a grease that generates a static charge as the wheel is turned, which is detected by a capacitive sensor on the board. you might be able to pack it back in, but you are better off buying a replacement mouse or scroll assembly.
