I don't really need the performance, and I'd rather support the underdog
When will we get a non-mechanical substitute?

Same reason people prefer mouse buttons that click instead of trackpads and physical keyboards to touchscreens
Because it keeps the monkeys subdued by offering more physical interaction with the clickity-clackity machines.
Silly, silly sheeple.
What the fuck is wrong with you?

Seriously though
Python 2 or Python 3
I thought this would have been settled by now
which one to learn
Learn 3.
Py2 is EoL in 2020
>>60184469
3 is a mess, 2 isn't going anywhere. There are far too many millions of dollars invested in production code for it to ever go away and honestly I haven't seen 3 in use anywhere in any sort of serious capacity
>>60184469
Theres really no difference. Just make a script to convert between versions when needed.

is linux mint a good place to start for a long time windows user?
I just want an OS that looks clean and gets the job done with no hassle (e.g. no "cute" assistant, no constant tips and tricks on screen, no updating without my permission, no tablet-esque squares for icons, etc) and Mint seems like it'll do the trick. what does /g/ think
Ubuntu, its flavours, and Mint are the best choices for a user who just wants to get shit done, despite /g/ memes. Mint is basically Ubuntu with a different DE and different defaults.
>>60184183
Yes, mint is what you're looking for. Choosing a DE is fun if you want to play with it.
Cinnamon is pretty, Xfce is simple, KDE is closest to windows 10 included suite, MATE is a middle ground.
You can install any later and uninstall others, don't fret the choice too much on any linux download page.

looks comfy as fuck
Find a flaw.
Makes you look like a sperg.
Turning your OS into a full-time hobby is not healthy.
it's not bspwm

I thought it would be a fun little project to create a tripcode finder in C, but I realized I don't know how a tripcode is generated from the given input text. I know secure tripcodes use an unknown salt, but non-secure tripcodes don't, so i was hoping someone here could explain how tripcodes on 4chan get generated.
Basically it gets generated by a fucking faggot.
>>60184152
Read wakaba manuals.
Here's a simple implementation I wrote for my chan clone.char *tripcode_hash(const char *pass)
{
/* returns pointer to static data -- NOT THREAD SAFE */
if (!pass) return NULL;
static const char *secret = "H.";
const char *p = (strlen(pass) < 3) ? NULL : pass; /* too short? */
char salt[5]; /* create salt */
sprintf(salt, "%c%c%s", (!p) ? ' ' : p[1], (!p) ? ' ' : p[2], secret);
char *s = salt;
do /* sanitize salt */
{
if (*s < '.' || *s > 'z') /* clamp to './0-9A-Za-z' */
*s = '.';
else if (*s >= ':' && *s <= '@') /* if ':;<=>?@' */
*s += 6; /* shift to 'ABCDEF' */
else if (*s >= '[' && *s <= '`') /* if '[\]^_`' */
*s += 6; /* shift to 'abcdef' */
} while (*++s);
char *trip = crypt(pass, salt);
memmove(&trip[1], &trip[3], strlen(&trip[3]) + 1);
trip[0] = '!';
return trip;
}

What's the deal with Thinkpads?
Why is everyone here telling me to get one?
>>60184056
they're the best laptops around and they get along nicely with linux.
also, used ones are dirt cheap.
>>60184056
They're pretty rugged and easier to customize their guts with different hardware than most other laptops.
Lots of options and different models to suit a variety of use cases. All pretty cheap, built well, and many have serviceable specs.
how does /g/ sit at their computer chair?

AMD stock
I built an AMD build with a r7 360 and an FX-8300 last summer for about $500.
When I was selecting parts I was trying to build the cheapest rig possible for moderate gaming and music production.
It was solid and I guess for the money it was alright, but this year when I came onto some more money, I built an Intel i5 6600k (for $179 during the initial Ryzen 7 shitstorm) and RX-480 build which I don't regret even with the RX-580 and Ryzen 5 out, since those are basically sidegrades in most ways for a little more money than what I spent.
Lesson: build the PC you want within what you can afford. Don't go the cheapest route possible to only upgrade later.

AMD is honestly finished. By the time it's out NVIDIA will nearly have Volta ready. They say Vega doesn't even compete with a 1070.
