Or rather, why doesn't LINUX run games well?

Is it something that is hardcoded? I know LINUX can run WINE, which gives it access to the .net framework. I know you can download Direct X drivers. I know LINUX supports most hardware drivers windows does.

Is there some fundamental difference between LINUX binaries and Windows executable files? Is it the filetree structure? Does running FAT32 preclude you from using programs made with NTFS?

What are your thoughts on UMD as a format? Other than the fact that only the PSP uses them.

>>
>>60453191
They broke easy.
They where hard to transport and not get destroyed.
They took forever to load.
They used up a lot of battery.
The best thing I ever did was installing a custom firmware and unplugging the UMD reader it did wonders for my battery life.
>>
>>60453233
Any problems with video quality?
>>
>>60453248
I never tried video on it.
But considering the UMD is capped at 1.8GB capacity and the screens on the PSP was 480 x 272 rez I can't really judge it.
Supposedly the Video was compared to regular DVD quality but no having ripped any in my time to the PC and looking at them in a decent screen I can't say for sure.

Welcome to /sht/: Second Hand Tech Thread!

Previous Thread: >>60430956

The purpose of this thread is for the lurkers/posters of /g/ to find a market for their second hand electronics or computer components. Its a well held belief on /g/ that paying for brand new electronics is not worth the price:performance ratio, and because of this I believe that /sht/ has a place on /g/.

/sht/ follows /fglt/'s example in that it is a friendly environment for requesting items and promoting your own second hand electronics.

As with any new General or maintained thread it's gonna be slow at first, please be patient with them. After a while I'll be able to update the OP with what /g/ believes certain components are worth and eventually make a buyers guide for used components.

/ghmd/ Rules:

>No blatant shitposting or flame wars between fanboys, these threads are for buying/selling/discussing prices.
>Any item you claim to be selling must be accompanied by pictures w/ time stamp (to prove you're not using stock photos) or a link to a listing, /ghmd/ recommends eBay or any site with buyers protection from scams.
>No spamming listings, if someone wants to buy what you have they'll respond or bid on the reply you posted the first time.

COMING SOON:

>A Google Spreadsheet of item's people are looking to sell and things people are looking to buy, it will be easy to read and well organized.

>A recommened items list, divided into use case scenario and price range

>Possibly a blog/website for reviews of popular requested items(?) (Not sure if /g/ wants this, very rarely do they want to go off site for discussion as far as I've seen)

Is AMD Phenom 955 BE still decent CPU?
I bought it almost 7 years ago and I keep it at 3.8GHz and it never caused any problems.

Its a 7 year old AMD processor..... What do you think?

Of course its going to bottleneck modern games and any decent modern GPU (RX 480, 1060, etc)

Depends on what you want to use it for I guess. As far as general use goes it should be fine but I wouldn't want to play BF1 with it or any game relying on a decent CPU.
>>
>>60453172
Yeah but I don't see anything much changed in CPUs except phenom is 45nm and right now we are at 14nm, or am I missing something?
>>
its fine if its all you have to go with your tinfoil hat

sticking with AM3 socket you could get an FX but those are terrible upgrades on a dead socket.

its more efficient to go AM4 for AMD or 1151 intels. you will get several years life from them, barring any sudden advancement in cpus

Would this be a good place to start and acquire this certificate?

1) Learn some programming language, usually these guys all use Python for scripting their own test suites and tools.

Do: Any intro to python course on edx.org
Read: Gray hat Python
Read: Black hat Python

2) Learn network security/web applications. Everything is an application in some cloud now.
Read/do: The Web Application Hacker's Handbook
Read: Tangled Web (Browser Security)
Read: Any other security book that looks interesting on NoStarchPress website.

Find a company who makes a Python product on Github. Start testing their shit with your new security test suite you built. Or learn Ruby/Rails and start zinging Ruby/Rails sites. Google "Appsec" and learn everything you can about it.

Finally go intern for some security corp like Optiv/Accuvant or NCC Group or the hundreds of others. Work there X years until you are confident enough to be a senior consultant, quit and charge $$$$$$$/hr as a freelancer. Get a cringey Twitter nym like "0xFalconSecurity" and follow the usual security people like TheGrugq, Charlie Miller, ect

Don't do any of this imo. Overkill for a beginner. Just study for the A+ or net+ exams, take them and get certified

Is 4Gb enough to run modern 3D programs like Zbrush and Maya?
Looking in to getting a cheap tablet to work outside or away from my PC while it is rendering.

Is it worth $150 to upgrade from 4gb to 8gb?

On my desktop PC I idle for around 2gb to 3.5gb.

Yes. I was to guess which one would have won in 2005 I would have said HD-DVD. It was the cheaper of the two and in general the cheaper technology wins.

HD-DVD ended up losing because Sony was very aggressive with pricing by putting it into the PS3, Toshiba could have been aggressive with the price right from the start, taking advantage of the fact that HD-DVD was a cheaper to manufacter technology, but they waited till Blu-ray was already winning to really push the price down, and by that point Sony got Warner Brothers, Wal-Mart and Blockbuster to go exclusively Blu-ray and then it was over for them.
>>
Yes, until Sony woke up.

Also, bundling BR playback ability with a console was no small stroke of marketing genius, showing just how tragically companies underestimate the appeal of convenience.

Not even remotely

2 hours of RAW lossless uncompressed 10-bit 1080p24fps video is about 1,000GB or 1TB. Some movies are even longer than 2 hours.

What people fail to understand is that even a blu-ray disc is a transcode of the movie, not 100% lossless video.

HD DVD used H264 probably using the ultrafast preset so it would have given people yify quality.

>>
>>60452499
The whole idea on which data science is founded is that it is possible to make data talk so to speak.

So instead of doing what any traditional researcher would do and seek to confirm hypotheses with data or make light exploration grounded in literature, a data scientist will use a complicated machine learning algorithm to obtain ((insights)). These insights can vary from between good to being very bad, but in most case a t-test would have provided results as insightful.

After having done his science, the data scientist will go on quora and explain to a neophyte that he does not need books to learn his trade, but can simply follow some introductory courses on udemy.
