I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. No, RAM doesn't matter, with 64bit you still get more registers to work with as well as whatever features come with the CPU, 32bit can use more than 4GB of ram with PAE, it's irrelevant.

Take into account this is only really true for software compiled for x64.
