For the purpose of this thread, assume the following:

1. A computer X exists;
2. This computer will never be used by anyone other than its owner;
3. All internet traffic will be carefully vetted through a magic secure router, preventing any malicious packets from even reaching this computer; and
4. All hardware connecting to the computer will be carefully vetted and uncompromised, never infecting the computer or installing software which isn't strictly necessary to function.

Why would the kernel/OS of this hypothetical computer keep track of permissions or other security features? Could it theoretically beat every other computer out there on performance/features if it didn't have to check or sandbox everything?

I get some student prices on antivirus packages so I'm considering getting one.
I currently use Comodo and MSE for live protection and regular scanning.

Should I get a paid one? My common sense is ok but sometimes it's sloppy. What do people on /g/ use?

If yes to the above, which one of these is the best?
F-secure
Norton
Kaspersky
AVG

Thanks for info

AV is useless unless you're scanning an already infected system. In which case make a malware scan and recovery disk. Most if not all are free. If you really need a babysitter then install uBlock Origin and enable all malware filters.

I am stupid for asking this

A guy I was friends with has a domain and a server; he runs some gmail stuff on it (my gmail account is myname@hisdomain). Is his finger in my butt regarding access to my emails?

I am asking because the relationship went somewhat downhill and I am trusting him less and less. I don't even know whether the mails are stored on his server or on google's and if he can access them in any case.

I am stupid for asking this

("Why don't you just make a new one?" Because then I would have to start thinking about secure mailing, and many people have my myname@hisdomain-address. Yes I will probably have to do that. But hisdomain is a cool name also.)

Pls respond

came here for the pic lmao
>>
Is he hosting the actual server or did he do a google email thing
>>
>>60812371

If he's the owner of the domain he has full access via the Google Apps dashboard to view the entire contents of your email if he chooses to do so. He can also set up rules redirecting emails inbound to you or forwarding copies to an external mailbox under his control.

You're not stupid for asking this, you're stupid for creating an email address with an individual with whom your trust isn't constant.

Is there any reason not to block all remote fonts globally? it seems like an unnecessary waste of bandwidth for nothing more than what one web dev likes.

>>
>>60812354
its useful if you force a custom font via script or via something else, so you dont have to make a rule for each site that uses remote fonts
>>
>>60812410
You don't. There's already a checkbox to block remote fonts.
>>
>>60812354

"Graphic design"
Inkscape looks alright.
>>
>>60812349
what type of graphics design do you actually do that would require more than just cropping shit in gimp or trace shit in inscape.

what type of video editing do you do that requires you to add special effects as with adobe after effects.

what kind of shit laptop do you have to blame linux on battery life.

Why is creating errors in your code a meme.
Everytime I see a post like this on Facebook, pajeets go wild.

It panders to the lowest common denominator of people.
Most people who work in programming aren't good at it and they identify with dumb shit like this.
It's like "don't talk to me till i've had my coffee" bullshit.
People just want to feel like they're part of something bigger than them, even if it's stupid.

or when women use the excuse "i'm just a bitch so deal with it"
>>
>>60811895
yeah. admitting you have a problem is the first step to solving it (probably), but if you integrate it into your personality it just makes you a shittier person.

also in my experience this doesn't happen a lot if you have detailed bug reports.

Why does it that in the year 2017 libreoffice still has trouble with .doc/.docx, .xls/.xlsx, .ppt/pptx, etc. I thought microsoft opened up all those formats.
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
From what I remember about the format, some of the stuff is direct bindings to Office libraries. LibreOffice have to emulate them.
>>
I've been submitting all of my papers in docx for the past 4 years during uni and I have never had a single issue.

What issues are you having OP?
>>
>>60811655
google docs for example pays microsoft to get compatibility support.
libre office cant afford that.
add to that that the formating and math libraries used in microsoft office, especially excel, are microsoft proprietary that can only be used by microsoft office.
thus the libre office and open office guys have to emulate functionality.

Ok /g/, I'm in a bit of pickle. Here's the thing:
Last night I was using my phone and I ended up falling asleep while browsing this place on Clover. Sometime after this the battery died, and I woke up today to a dead phone.
So, I connect it to the wall, and when it goes on I see that apparently "SD card was removed unexpectedly". Now, it's done this other times and it's always hogey and ends up being corrected by reinserting or rebooting. No big deal, so I do those, but the message just keeps appearing regardless.
Well fuck me, maybe it did get corrupted on the forced shutdown. I then take to examining it and see if it was damaged, try browsing it on a PC with an SD adapter and it does read it no problem, I can see all files; then running CHKDSK several times on it with no errors or corruption found. Thing is, it still doesn't work.
When I reinsert it with the phone on (while checking the storage screen on settings), it appears it reads it for a couple seconds, then it drops off and shoots the unexpectedly removed shit again.
I don't know what else to try short of doing a full on formatting, but I'd rather not jump to that since, while I do have a backup, some stuff might get messed up over the SD formatting.

Phone is an LG L50 Sporty if that's relevant.
Pic isn't mine, but it's the closest I found to the error I'm getting on google images.

try with another card, maybe the reader in your phone is damaged
>>
>>60810515
Remove the SD and copy everything on your PC
Leave the battery out of the phone for 10 minutes then reboot to recovery and wipe Dalvik cache
Put back microsd and reboot, if the error happens again try to format the SD from the phone
