On my main desktop PC that I've had time to set up: no desktop environment, just i3.

On a new machine when I need to install a GUI asap without having to seperately configure basic functions like screenshots: Gnome.

I'll be a lot happier with Gnome when it gets quarter-tiling, which I believe is being worked on.

Gentoo has systemd free use profiles.

Some people care about free speech despite the fact that it can be abused. Some even might want to do something good without making money of it.
