With the Debian 9 release yesterday, I was thinking of switching to it from Manjaro. Should I do it? My main concerns here are:
1. Compared to Arch/Manjaro, how big are the repos (in actual applications)? Will I be able to install more software from outside (.deb files, PPA...)?
2. Will I be able to get software updates that are not just security? I don't care too much about cutting edge but I really don't want to be using the same old version of Firefox/LibreOffice/Whatever for 2 years....
3. Is Debian Stable actually stable, or will it break as soon as I try to remove unneeded shit or switch display managers/desktops?
1) they're big enough, and yes
2) yes
3) Debian stable is stable. Get a server install and install your WM yourself, you'll avoid the bloat
>>60961964
So you recommend a net-install/minimal install?

Stable is fine and I highly doubt anything will EVER crash or break on you. That's why they call it stable. Be aware however that you will not get new features on programs, just security fixes for the most part. It is best used on servers for this reason.
Just did a little research and stable will change for a little bit because of the recent (yesterday) migration of Stretch being testing to stable and Jessie to oldstable. This should subside soon.
On desktops, many people use testing or unstable. Unstable is rolling release with the repos updated every 6 hours. For the most part, unstable really isn't what its name says it is. Sure, you may have to freeze a package from time to time and whatnot, but honestly I have had MUCH less issues with unstable than Arch.
Testing is a good middlepoint as packages must be bugfree in unstable for about a week before they are able to be migrated to testing. Semi-rolling release if you think about it. Only bad thing about it is that you are usually he last to get security updates and bug fixes due to the unstable -> testing release cycle.
In order to upgrade, you should go fromStable -> Testing -> Unstable
Simply edit your /etc/apt/sources list to have testing/Buster ((to follow either the testing branch or follow the buster branch(which is testing now) into stable when it turns) ) or unstable/Sid. Note that Sid will always be the codename of the Unstable branch as it was the Toy Story character that always broke everything. Hahaha.
You'll also want to install apt-list{changes,bugs} if you go to unstable.
I use unstable and have had much more luck with it than testing, but it requires you to read changelogs and stuff. Takes about 5 minutes.

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1500x - All you really need for 60fps with power to spare; Don’t get an i5 right now.
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.
GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>Titan XP - 4k@60hz maxed in most, if not all games; You don't need this unless you're curing cancer or something.
General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
Please be nice to people asking questions. No fanboy arguments please.

Gonna grab the GPU when prices go down to reasonable levels again, and plan to grab a second kit of ram (same exact kit) for 16 GB total in the future when I need it.
SSD chosen almost entirely on looks since it will be on display.

What's a good comparison site for performance where I can decide if upgrading is worth it for me as I want to justify an upgrade with large % in performance over predecessor
How do I get better at programming /g/?
I can complete personal projects by hacking together a solution using what I already know but then I have no idea if my implementation is optimal or completely terrible.
Even if I do manage to figure out a more efficient way to structure the program after creating it, usually my actual implementation is so different that changing it would require a whole rewrite which doesn't seem worth my time doing.
How can I practice programming whilst getting feedback on if what I'm doing is good or not?

If Wayland is the "Linux desktop" then all the advantages are gone.
You do know that Wayland's design effectively destroys any choice and customization right? Wayland's protocol is basically an isolation prison that requires "big DE's" and destroys choice. The protocol moves everything into one central place called the "compositor" this machinery must provide:
- the window manager
- the hotkey daemon
-the compositing effects
-the windowing server
-screen reading tools
-screenshots
-screen casting
-magnifying glass tools
-global dictionary tools
-etc etc etc everything.
Wayland's design makes it impossible to write a portable hotkey daemon for instance. Supposedly for "security reasons". Wayland is a GNOME dev's dream, it kills the ability of people to control their own system. If you're actually excited for Wayland you either thoroughly misunderstand what it brings and just like it because it's new or you're a drooling GNOME-lover who hates customization.
>>60961403
What's to stop someone building a compositor which farms that behavior out to other applications, perhaps through a plugin system?
>>60961403
I agree. Furthermore what even was wrong with x11? I really liked the network transparency for example/.
>>60961419
Nothing in theory, it would work, but Wayland is not even close to there yet we see heavy supporters of it all over this place.

Should I sell my XFX RX 480 for $400+ and get a GTX 1070?
I sold my msi 480 for 400 burgers and got a 1080 for 150 bucks, dream big
>>60961170
Did you buy a used 1080? Also where? Also I live in a major city hopefully it sells fast on craigslist.
>>60961155
Considering the RX480 is sought after by miners and GTX1070 gets more performance in games instead.
Why not?
If you want gaming performance and can get it cheaper you should go for it.
Eitherway, sell it since VEGA is coming out soon and I think you'll manage on iGPU until that release.
Also wait for Volta since those might surely be faster than VEGA, but then VEGA will drop in price hopefully before miners start buying that as well.

I think I'm finally ready to install Gentoo.
I've mocked you guys for a long time but I think I've finally realised that Microsoft no longer has the general public's best interest at heart.
Why do you guys recommend gentoo ? Why not Ubuntu ?

I'm serious man, seems that windows is perpetually updating. When it's not installing updates it's busy downloading them.

Gentoo is end game start with something simple and work your way up trisquel would be a easy choice that would respect your freedom.
With the latest multi-process update and its interface that is still better than Chrome's, I'm thinking about getting Firefox back as my main browser again.
My last problem with it is security : I know that it wasn't sandboxed for a long time (Chrome, IE, Edge, Opera and Safari are), and it seemed to be the least secure of all. Now I heard that they had begun to sandbox tabs, but I can't find anything on it.
Is it sandboxed yet ? Can I trust it ?

Hello /g/ I need your advice. I am looking for a Linux distribution that will fit on a standard 700mb CD. I already have tried Lubuntu and Xubuntu so these fall out of the question because I wanted to try something new. What do you think are the best (Besides the ones that were mentioned) Linux distros at 700mb max?

Knoppix
Op here, I should mention that I want to install it on my hard drive and use it for daily tasks.
