Why use anything else? It doesn't get better than this.
>>61247698
From a Debian-fag's point of view, here are some reasons as far as I can see that some people would not use Debian but other Linux distros:
>too hard and too DIY for Linux newbies
>not enough granular control of OS - I think it has plenty but some want way more
>systemd - not a problem for me but some don't like it
>not enough new software in stable
>disagreeing with the "Debian Way" and culture
>being a RH fag
>wanting something more out-of-the-box
>gaming - more games work in Ubuntu than Debian
That'll do for now, I'm sure there are way more. Playing devil's advocate as a Stretch user.

my r9 280x died on me 1 hour ago, should i bake it in the oven?
i was browsing web and suddenly two monitors became white, after that i rebooted pc then white stripes on 1st screen appeared while 2nd monitor had no signal warning and it wouldn't boot into operating system. i think its a vram problem i heard baking gpus in the oven could fix it.
Definitely. I fixed my old GTX 260 doing this. What do you have to lose?
I used 180C for 5 minutes, so try that first. If it doesn't work, gradually increase the temperature and/or duration.
>>61247771
Oh, and this should be obvious, but you need to take the heatsink off before you try this.
Make sure the card is chip-side-up on the baking tray.
Hold the card away from the baking tray using some non-flammable objects (I used hex nuts) placed in positions where they're not in contact with any components (IE they should touch the PCB or end mount, and NOTHING else).
Have fun!
It might start working again. That might be temporary. This is not at all a reliable method to "fix."
You can really n-word it up by baking it long enough to get it working again and then selling it second-hand to recover some value. Depends how scummy you are.
I built a fairly powerful desktop and I'm looking for a cheap laptop. The laptop will mainly be used when travelling for everyday things like web browsing and streaming videos.
I would prefer a screen size of 13 inches, but anything between 12 and 14 inches is acceptable. Good battery life is a must.
I'm thinking of getting a Chromebook and installing Ubuntu on it. Any thoughts or recommendations?
It wouldn't hurt to take a moment and really deeply consider how much actual input you're going to do. Does your browsing involve much text entry? If not you could get away with a tablet.
Otherwise, sure, go with a Chromebook. Make sure it's got a nice display. Look for sales.
Leaning towards the Acer Cromebook R13. Size is perfect, and the display is supposed to be good for a Chromebook.

Buy Thinkpad
Is 17.04 still buggier than 16.04 LTS? I'm trying to decide if it's worth installing or if I should just stick with LTS.
>>61247550
you should install Debian and be done with that shit-colored distro. Ubuntu's the worst.

>Microsoft confirmed a series of rumored job cuts Thursday, mostly in sales, as part of a big reorganization.
>Microsoft didn’t give specifics numbers, but the company is cutting thousands of jobs. CNBC puts the number of job cuts at around 3,000, representing approximately 10 percent of Microsoft’s total salesforce. Microsoft said a significant majority of jobs expected to be eliminated are outside the U.S.
>Microsoft issued the following statement about the layoffs:
>Microsoft is implementing changes to better serve our customers and partners. Today, we are taking steps to notify some employees that their jobs are under consideration or that their positions will be eliminated. Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time-to-time, re-deployment in others.
https://www.geekwire.com/2017/microsoft-confirms-layoffs-reportedly-impacting-3000-positions-globally-mostly-sales/
>sales
haha
They've been acquiring a lot of companies so layoffs were expected and sales is usually the easiest thing to consolidate. Sucks for the people who got fired though. /g/ has a hard on for stem but honestly a stem job is more likely to be outsourced/kill than a sales job since any poo or chink can do the calculations for less and companies don't like to fire salesmen since they have a client list they can take to competitors.

Hardware Diagnostics
Every error slows down your system a bit, and this cant be tolerated ! Also there are erros that found early can prevent huge damage.
So which are the best tools to check if everything is runing at its best..
So which do you consider the best tools to check hardware?
Mine personal choices:
>RAM
Memtest86+
>HDD
HDDRegenerator v1.71 (sectors)
HDAT2 (SMART Errors)
>CPU
S&M Stresstest
>GPU
Furmark
>PSU
Good old multimeter
>Motherboard
Never found anything good to test them but if they can keep up with all other tests and stresstests and theres nothing visible on them, they are most likely fine
>Apple
Well idk any tool to test them

Interesting
>>61249428
The point is not to benchmark its to push it hard to see if it gliches or breaks

Why don't we have practical and robust designs anymore? Two examples that come to my mind are the old Sony portable casette players and BMW cars.
>BMW cars
no
>>61247117
>Practical
What about a walkman is practical compared to modern day equivalents?
>Robust
Again, compare it to a modern equivalent. These days cheap, dedicated music players are incredibly durable. You would have to go out of your way and try to break anything but the most bargain bin crap.

We are talking about design, my friend.
Old thinkpad laptop died. I have a career now so money is not an object. What laptop should I buy?
Any good 1080 i7, non gpu, 13.3 screen light weight laptop. I don't want a mac after feeling their shit keyboards.

oh and hopefully linux compatible. I had a dell laptop that was a bitch to get linux on.

That's hilarious considering you posted a laptop with literal shit-tier keyboard.
