If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC
CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming
GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM
General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
oops just made a thread but I will post here.
Building my first computer.
Anything wrong with this setup?
My 20+ hour struggle continues, I plugged in the power switch and reset switch wrong and I think I connected my HDD and optical drive wrong, I'm just going to take a break from this for a few days
>>61641256
disassemble all the part and start with simplest one,
- connect psu to the power, turn it on does your psu fan spun?
- add psu to motherboard and cpu without ram, it should beep
- add ram and gpu, connect the monitor, try to go to bios
- finally add your hdd
Anything wrong with this setup?
>DVD drive
>4tb SSD
>32gb ram
seems overkill
>for mining
Enjoy your brick when eth goes PoS
>>61641265
Won't be mining eth desu. I will mine shitcoins from the bitcointalk forums that haven't reached exchanges yet.
>>61641252
Yeah, with the dvd I though would get a good one as they are quite cheap. For the 4tb ssd, how is that not sexy? 32gb, perhaps. I would just like to have a high ceiling, no limits. I am a bit of a noob.
What's a good alternative to a Surface Pro? I like all the features, but FUCK Windows 10.
rMBP, Chromebook Pixel 2, an XPS13 with your favorite distro, etc
>>61641129
Not OP, but literally none of these have the features of a surface pro
>>61641085
rMBP.
Surface a shit.
Anyone here program on a Chromebook WITHOUT enabling developer mode and installing Linux? I'm talking about using only signed Chrome apps, cloud storage, and a dev server.
>>61641019
>I'm talking about using only signed Chrome apps, cloud storage, and a dev server.
must be hell
>>61641172
Is pretty comfy actually. Everything is synched with the botnet save SSH keys so I can wipe my Chromebook to factory settings but be up and running like nothing happened in 10 minutes. Don't have to fuck with reinstalling environments.
>>61641019
I used to with a OG Samsung and a hosted install of c9, was quite comfy
is arch really the best?
>>61641004
I use it and like it. Never gives me any problems, and the package manager is God tier.
There's no objective "best" distro though.
Inb4
>[distro I use] is objectively best
>>61641946
Gentoo is objectively best.
I am contemplating Void linux. How much will it suck to not have the AUR?
Should I just Majaro w/ OpenRC instead?
Am i falling for a meme?
>>61641000
Everything non-mechanical these days is normie-tier trash with chiclet keys for no fucking reason, so no.
>>61641000
Yes and no, mechanical isnt meme, but blank keycaps, "custom" and overly minimalist overpriced keyboard are.
>>61641000
>mechanical
not a single advantage

Why does /g/ dislike Python?
>>61640910
for <20 lines of code I will consider python
it's a joke for serious developement tho
you need types and curly braces m8

What doesn't /g/ dislike?
>>61640938
GCC
the only complaint is that their implementations are too complex to read

Using Qubes OS. If I wanted, since Qubes OS allows for using many operating systems, I could install and keep Windows 10 with my other three Linux operating systems running all at once. Windows 10 in Qubes OS is unable to spy, etc. Needless to say, I recommenced it.
ITT: redflags that instantly mark software as garbage
>custom UI that has standard buttons in different place (like close window) so if you opened 10 different programs and clicked in the same place to close them all it wouldnt work for this one
>option to launch on startup but no option for launch minimzed
>Designed by Apple in California
Custom UI in general is a red flag, you should always inherit your style from the operating environment's style.

>desktop app
>doesn't have a menu bar or static sidebar

Why? Just why?
How do I make a GUI on Windows.
Why most courses only teach to program console based program when 99% of commercial software is GUI based? Fucking retards.
>>61640606
Depends on the language, but most GUI makers are drag&drops
>>61640606
>windows
That's your first problem. Install gentoo and you will never have problems with guis again
>>61640606
Download Visual Studio.
Mek a project.
Drag'n'drop various controls.
Done.
A child can do that. Programming on the other hand has to be taught.

Anyone reckon this deal will still be here at the end of August?
I blew my wages on ladbrokes like a faggot.
>>61640903
The sale ends approximately by around August 21.
So I'm thinking about revising the buying guide since now it seems like the general opinion has changed on what we recommend newcomers to buy. I think I'll wait a few more threads before doing it just to see some more discussion about this. Generally seems to be that right now the Vive isn't a good idea, where either one should wait for LG, gen 2, or if one wants VR now, to just get the Rift.
