SS is meant to be a starting workout to build good foundation. Then you move on with targeted workouts on muscles that you want to get stronger.
The noobs are the ones who stay on starting strength for more than a year or so and become t-rex mode by having gigantic legs and moderately sized upper body.
The idiots spouting the meme started with isolation exercises that involved 3x30 bicep curls and no leg exercises because they dont like being sore.
the people spouting the meme started with some dumb workout that their bro/gym teacher/burnout dad/moderately fit co-worker/ gave them and decided to skip the good foundation. It will work but not developing important muscle groups such as your (back, shoulders, and legs) before targeting isolated muscles can lead to injury.
There is nothing better than frequent full body routines like SS for a weak noob that wants to add muscle and put weight on the bar quickly.. period.

SS is great, you just need to highbar squat instead and front squat every other workout and add chin ups and chest dips and light incline DB press on OHP days and light DB shoulder press on bench days and alternate pendlay rows with every other power clean day and do calf raises to failure on every prime numbered day of the month.
Here's what i learnt after doing SL5x5 for a while.
These routines are for people who are :
1. Serious as hell to START their gym journey, hence the physical difficulty of the routines.
2. Provide as few exercises as possible and focus on learning them accurately, thus preparing the mind to always seek performing exercises in the most perfect form, rather than doing 100 things incorrectly.
3. Allow the casual non gym-goer to interact with others in the gym since these three exercises are usually what most people seek help with. (Form check, spotting, etc)
4. Just simply infuse the muscle-brain connections to accept that this person's body is doing HARD work, therefor allow "hypothetically" better recovery & muscle building than doing isolated exercises.
Once the person is used to the routine, say 6months in, he should start to seek changing it to what he ultimately desires.
It's a troll meme because all i remember years ago that everyone on /fit/ argued that it is the routine to go with as a starter (and it still is), yet some took it far more than just a starting routine and then /fit/ shamed them for their under developed arms and lack of physical attractiveness.
