Pretty sure I watched a program once that tested Yakult and other brands and they found that most of the bacteria is dead before you even get to drink it

You're better off buying the tablet form, there are good brands out there, check Amazon

As far as fermented things go, Sauerkraut is really really hard to fuck up.
Just make little batches in Mason Jars at first.
