Islam, in my opinion and limited knowledge, is about the individual contact with God. Very little in the scripture is about how to live, that's mostly in the hadiths.

Although, hadiths are legitimate sources of information, the quran came complete. You don't need anything besides it to live.

Now, the problem i think people do is mix the culture with religion. The arabic culture has alot of misogyny in it, but so does every culture really. It just expresses itself in different ways. What I can see, personally, is that very little from the quran actually strides against the western mentality and mindset.

I did some research about Taqiya, as im genuinly interested, and most of the sources seem to point to sura 3.28.

Now, arabic is a very complex language so translations vary ALOT, but my understanding and what i saw was the most accurate translation was this;

"Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security. Allah biddeth you beware (only) of Himself. Unto Allah is the journeying."

In previous verses, the quran is commenting about the other religions of the scripture in;

"Hast thou not seen how those who have received a portion of the Scripture invoke the Scripture of Allah (in their disputes) that it may judge between them; then a faction of them turn away, being opposed (to it)?"

I think that 3.28 is refering to the struggles early muslims had with mostly jewsish people. 3.23 (and 3.24) is talking about how the original old and new testemants and teachings of the previous prophets is an integral part of Islam, but that it had been corrupted and/or changed. One of the main principles in Islam is the belief that the quran is uncorrupted and unchanged, which in itself is a strong contrast to the rest of the abrahamitic books.

The quran were recieved in parts by hearing, and not as a complete book. It's a belief that the quran were whispered in the prophets ear and he recited it for others to write.

Now, what i can understand from 3.28 is that it came down in a context that melting in was crucial, in a society that was dangerous to muslims (whereas, "taking security"). It says nothing about being offensive and/or attacking or deceiving, and nothing about Islam being threatened?

In all likelihood he was a Zoroastrian who was forced to convert (or die) by Muslim rulers because Persia had been conquered by the Islamic armies and that was what Muslims did (and still do wherever they can). That could easily explain the "pious preface to al-Khwārizmī's Algebra".
