Funny you should mention Minot, because I was just getting details about my grandpa yesterday.

He was born in North Dakota to Ukrainian parents. His father took off, and he lived with his mother in Minot. There were five children. The mother didn't speak much, if any, English. He was an excellent welder, and rose to foreman despite the prejudice against outsiders within the unionized local industry. He married a woman who worked under him (who went on to place #1 in a national welding competition).

He earned and saved his way into owning a small concrete company. He went on to become a home builder and was president of the Home Builder's Association. He was well-respected, admired by the community, and loved by his family and friends. He had four children and took in another child from an abusive home.
