5'8 male, 140 pounds after a lot of weight loss. I don't know my bf% but I'm def skinny fat, I'd guess 18%

I want to gain abs basically, should I just start working out hard or lose more weight? If I work out at this bf% will I be turning the fat to muscle/abs, or just having it hide under what I have?

I'm confident my height is 5'8, maybe very slightly below

My weight is deifnitely 140 as well.

Bf% I'm unsure of how to measure, I don't have calipers. I used a measuring tape but it was one of those ones that are more metallic/doesn't bend well

Then I used an online calculator. I'll try to find a more accurate way to measure myself

My max bench is 40kg. I wish I was kidding, but I'm not. I'm really fucking weak and skinny so it's not surprising.

I'd like to know how to periodize my bench training guys, so I can gain a few kilograms.

If you're that weak I'd recommend a full body workout 3x a week.

Do 4 sets of bench, 4 sets of barbell rows, 3 sets of clean and press, 2 set of squats, and 1 set of deadlifts.

Do that 3x a week for 3 months, then add shit.

Why the fuck do people go to the gym to do 5*5 or 3*5 sets ? It's like you enjoy resting for 90% of your workout. You need to rest at least 20 minutes to complete a 5*5, and that's only with 5 minutes of rest time, some people take double that time.

Meanwhile you can get better hypertrophy by taking 2 minutes of rest between your sets and doing 8 to 12 reps.

Oily fish.
A variety of vegetables (example from me today: 100g cabbage, 100g spinach, 100g broccoli, 200g mushrooms, 50g celery, 100g radish).
Then, it's a matter of price, and if you want to go plant, meat, or diary based. Whatever you do, you'll need a few good sources of protein (max. needed: 1.65/kg), and carbs that can cover micronutrients as well.

Aim to make a meal that consists of a lean protein, a lean carb and a lean veg

Eg: chicken breast with rice and broccoli
Turkey with sweet potato and salad

Etc. Just find stuff that you can afford, find easy to prep and most importantly actually like.

The problem is I'm not a fatass in the traditional sense. I'm ~150, but I feel like most of that is fat as there's no real observable muscle anywhere. On top of that, my diet sort of sucks, mainly because I don't see myself as a fatass (having at one point been a fatass), so I feel guilty when I eat/drink shit I know is bad. I'm somewhat active, but apparently not enough to make a noticeable difference, which is really why I pose the question in the first place.
