Well it's been a long journey from my depression and I believe people usually are very different,
so I'm not gonna advise anyone to do the same as me, but take from it what you want or think could work for you.
Actually, my main piece of advice is what led me to lifting; if you're not happy with the current conditions, do something differently.
Just keep trying different things till you find what works for you. Anyways, this is what I did:

> I stopped doing things I didn't want to do, family events etc., kinda like coccoon mode
> life was pleasant but I was still depressed
> figured I had to try something different, that led me to this board

> lifting became a pillar in my life, something to always be working on, researching etc.
> it has become my meditation, I clear my head and relax.
> I know the weights are always there waiting no matter how other things go

I've also put aside morals and ethics and embraced "the real world", not the world everyone wishes they lived in, but the cold harsh one we actually have.

how is it not low impact? Also, yeah doing HIIT on one will smoke you, but rowing 8000 meters at a relaxed pace is enjoyable.

thus, obviously you should work out (and make sure you do it in close-to an optimal way, for your goals)

what your "muh feels" about going to the gym are or aren't, never even enter into the picture

even if you are a hardcore academic, you HAVE to work out for optimal brain performance (and then you might as well make it count and get a ripped to shreds physique, since the time commitment is the same, compared to working out in the typically idiotic way most people do)

Also because i have nothing to do in the day other than school work and lifting offers a nice break. There's also no better feeling than seeing progress in your body and lifts which is cool.

What's the deal? They both allegedly weigh 45 lbs each, so why does lifting seem so much easier with rubber? Do they actually weigh different amounts despite what the label says? Is it the density, or the weight dispersion from rubber plates being thicker? or is it all in my head?
