You have to look at it from a historical perspective. Drug use was rampent in the 70's/early 80's. Sid vicious od'd on smack, and ludes were being taken like candy. Ian mackaye wrote the song "straight edge" in what 1980? He was an 18 year old kid writing a song about his personal philosophy that maybe 10 of his close friends were going to listen to. He wasn't preaching a movement or trying to start something new, it just made sense to the guy when the late 70's were so drug fueled and everyone was irresponsible. Coke was huge as was every drug and he wasn't into it so he wrote a 40 sec song about it. Pretty much the full extent of straight edge. And Rollins is the fucking man...
