So has anyone copped the Publish Legacy jogger? They're joggers with water/stain resistance.

I feel they hit the sweet spot between tech and streetwear. So many technical pants from /out/ brands fit like shit and look like grandpa hiking pants.

Nicest in what way? My first thought is an Alpaca beanie.

Warmest? Probably one of these.

http://www.blackrockgear.com/hat_splash.html

Weather resistant? There's tons of Windstopper beanies out there. Pic related is an interesting one from Marmot. First for the shape, second because it's in Polartec Power Stretch with a Windstopper membrane. Windstopper, not Polartec's own Windbloc or Powershield.

"Beanie" seems fairly universal in use and catalog copy. The Wikipedia article is under "knit cap."

Re: the Freeshell in general, great patterning and the sling/bag conversion are its strong points, along with Nanosphere, the super-DWR "self-cleaning" treatment Schoeller does that's famous for shrugging off condiments. Personally, I'd trade the clean-tucking bag conversion for just a sling and more pockets: Napoleon pocket(s) on the chest, an externally accessible lumbar pocket.

Re: the M-Back fabric, 200gsm nylon outer/wool inner deal, it's probably the best they've done it in, but it means a few specific things for the jacket in use. They're billing it as a "cool weather layering piece," which is almost too precise language. It's lighter than the standard Dryskin/OG Cloth they've been using (240gsm, nylon outer/polyester inner), and at that point it's basically just a shell. Very versatile, with the only thing more suited for all-year use being the 145gsm, nylon only Ultralight Freeshell. For cool weather, autumn/winter, you'll want to wear something fairly substantial under it except in decent aerobic use. It may be, from a fuzzy memory of past copy for a different jacket, their idea is you layer it with their 285gsm, all merino Doublefine Hoody that has a matching, slightly tighter version of the Freeshell pattern.
>>
>>8954792
>also a lot better made and robust i bet

that completely and totally depends on the individual brands design and manufacturing processes, don't make stupid generalizations.

if you look at materiality, techwear comes out on top. two jackets of similar build quality, but one made of heritage cotton or wool or what the fuck ever and the other one with a superomniphobic coating, performance membrane, sweatmapped venting and anatomic seams and its a nobrainer.

these heritage materials of many western workwear brands, for all their richness and history will wear down and wet out faster than the innovations in techwear.

if you're worried about the aesthetic, most japanese techwear actually resembles western heritage workwear on the surface, but with much more added functionality (see junya's reversible hunting vests) and consideration for quality. if they're a japanese brand you also usually buy in part, excellent customer and product service, so you can take the garment you paid hundreds of dollars for back to get it repaired and have it last a lifetime, see nanamica, visvim and henderscheme.

do a little research before spouting off.

>>8954895
there's plenty of ways a fabric can trap heat and insulate without weight, brushed linings for example but it can go down to the type of fiber used.
just because its lighter than the OG Cloth doesn't mean you won't sweat where you'd be comfortable with the latter.

as for wearing things under, baselayers are essential. rapha's merino ones are really good.

Good post, although I'll add that some of the retro stuff can perform just as well (I'm mostly thinking of wool) and a lot of membranes are frankly overrated, or overhyped might be a better way to put it.

I'd love an anatomically patterned wool flannel shirt with updated techy features.

>>8954918
Agh, it sucks he doesn't still post. Can't blame him.

>>8954895
>(con't from, one more post in this review thing)
I wish they had taken a different approach, making this more of a casual all-of-autumn-and-some-of-winter hoody meant to just be thrown over whatever baselayer, that just happens to be a softshell. Do the awesome nylon/wool deal, but at that kind of 285gsm weight. And have people have the 140gsm Ultralight for year round shell use.

But that's my preference, and the jacket isn't really for me - I read anything with just two hand pockets and an inner stow pocket as a casual, laid back piece, even for urban use. I think, *blazers* have more pockets. But Outlier's whole deal is clean lines and unnoticeable function, performance mainstream North Brooklyn smart-casual. Whereas my taste is all about visual density and relishing function, form not just following but flaunting function, turning tools into ornaments and criminal ornaments into countercultural toys. Whatever you call the style of luxury new-construction condos (real architecturefags, help me out) versus a kind of anarcho-Brutalism, Louis Kahn by way of an Occupy camp. And when my taste does hit luxury, it's a more indulgent, decadent, languorous kind - and I guess that's what the Freeshell design looks like to me, something for a bodega run on a torrential Sunday morning when bed is all you want and you can't even think of whatever bougie brunch, except fuck we're out of...

w2c nice leggings ~$45 for lifting/running? Really like them way to wear shorts during the winter and for slimming your legs, also need them for my Halloween costume so I figured it was a good excuse to invest in some

I'm hoping/dreaming that this is part of a deliberate, comprehensive fabric move - that they'll make the 200gsm M-Back fabric their new mainstay and move away from the current standard 240gsm OG Cloth a their all-but-the-hottest-summer fabric.

None of this is at all to rag on Outlier, even though I compared them to condos; unlike those condos, I'm glad they exist and there's Outlier pieces I love as they are, as they're intended, on me. And it's not really a talk in/talk out of thing for the Freeshell, but I'm pretty sure something in all that will click and you'll know whether it's right for you or not.

>>8954954
Ounce for ounce wool is warmer, but 40gsm is a big difference to make up.

One thing I do like about both fabrics is that they can worn NTS without a baselayer. Throwing on a casual jacket that covers the whole chest with nothing under it is something I'm kind of prone to doing.

they're going to rip eventually, and if you're getting just straight black for under shorts or as like long underwear as I wear them there's not much point - unless you have a lot of disposable income.
they have them in the sports/underwear section

I usually go for anybody's merino (check Sierra Trading Post for cheap ones) or Patagonia Capilene for synthetic. Check their Web Specials section on their site, or get them really cheap used on eBay or at any thrift store around rich white people. They're nearly indestructible but technically underwear, so they go cheap.

I saw pic related recently courtesy of the best bag blog on the Internet, and I think it's a sharp idea. Pannier converts to crossbody sling.

Normally I'm not keen on sling bags, but for something you keep on the bike most of the time and occasionally remove it seems perfect.

i haven't ever been like super smitten with outlier but maybe that's because i find their pieces - design-wise - to be a bit plain for the price when there are more attractive (cough, isaora) brands that are in that similar midmarket price bracket.

also i have a tiny waist and it bothers me that they only go down to 28 :/ though the climbers look skinny and wearable, since i've been looking for sortof a performance trouser. isaora hasn't provided as of yet, still really favoring the dropcrotch which i'm not too about.

>>8955076
Definitely enough for casual use. I'll have to check a Wal-Mart next time I'm near one.

>>8955075
Yeah, when I feel like being pejorative I call them "J. Crew/Epaulet + Schoeller." It's a valid niche, but I wish they'd indulge their "experimental" impulses more often.

Or, what I really wish is that a different designer would come up in the same space, use similar fabrics, and throw us shit like Devoa in synthetics for aesthetic reasons, instead of taking advantage of the stretch to keep clean lines. Merino dress shirts with side entry pockets, versus, "hey, we tacked down the collar instead of buttons!"

>>8955076
Advance search, typed in anorak into the username field. Kept clicking +96 until it blanked, clicked backwards until there was content, figured the "offset" count got close enough.

There's probably a cleaner way, and if not someone could code it pretty easily.

>>8955075
Also I kind of just skipped over the latter part. You might just go to a tailor, either to alter a pair of Outlier pants or to make one from scratch.

Dryskin doesn't take anything special to work with, although some tailors might shy away from it just because they're not used to working with something with that much stretch.

Though I'm not sure I want to know what the most reposted image is here.

One more "and such" pic - I found thisthe other day, searching for a double wall stainless coffee mug with a silicone cap (chemically inert and will keep the coffee at a good serving temperature) and think it goes aesthetically with a lot of this stuff. Shiny green and black, stamped with an REI logo. Available in plain stainless, too.

I'm out for a bit, but I'll answer the questions I said I would from the last two threads in a few hours and dump some more.

Any ideas for boots that'd be usable in the winter? (sub $200, black, waterproof)
Hopefully goretex?
Someone rec'd Haglof, but they have no stateside retailers for the Observe HI's, which would end up running $300~ shipped from the UK.

Added some clothes to my wardrobe and have been dressing techwear for the last few days. Just consists of pants shoes and a sweater usually. It's coming into winter now and it will be too cold to just wear the basic stuff I'm wearing now. Are techwear jackets warm? They seem quite light.

stop thinking in terms of 'techwear' and 'not techwear'
take into account your needs
a softshell will insulate you and protect you from the elements
layers will keep you warm
a hardshell will heavily protect you from the wind

Techwear falls mostly upon the materials, not the look.
A good example is the Ministry of Supply, which has techwear made for office environments.
Another good idea is to look up the last general thread in the archive, it had a wealth of information.
