used HD650s for 300 was the best thing I ever did. hooked up to an audio gd compass dac/amp combo that doubles as a dac for my speaker setup. that shit's been sounding awesome for 5 years now and it's pretty entry-level budget-wise. a couple were great in some particular regard -- for example the RS-1 has a fantastic clarity to it that was really thrilling on some tracks. But as far as price/performance and versatility I don't think anything matched the HD650. It's got fantastic mids, ever so slightly rolled-off treble (so rarely any sibilance), and pretty passable bass response, though not perfect. It handles loudness exceptionally, and at high volumes is more balanced than most comparable headphones. And unlike many headphones the soundstage is actually not bad -- sounds seem to be outside your head rather than inside. It's just such an amazingly well-rounded pair of headphones, and replacing the cable when it breaks is extremely easy and inexpensive (and I've only had to do it once).

I'm not saying you need to go out and get a pair, but... if you could amp it properly, you definitely wouldn't regret it, I think.
