this isn't really appropriation imo, its taking this imagery and juxtaposing in away to make a much broader statement.

If this is appropriation, then so are music samples in hip hop, or adjusted images used in other graphic art. I would contend that when one makes art, they are contributing to large "pot," if you will, that contains "all the art," which I think anyone should be allowed to draw inspirations and ideas from as long as proper credit is given. And even that should be waved sometimes. If you remember when Bob Dylan tried to sue Coldplay over a chord progression, I think you can at least see what I'm saying as far as the idea to freely be able to create and express oneself, so long as it isn't just an extremely blatant ripoff.

I really hate that these threads are just the same shirts and images reposted every time

appropriation is only a problem in cases where you are contributing to maintaining a discourse of Other-ness about the culture being appropriated

what I mean is, if you wear a Native American costume to a party, you're contributing in a subtle way to how people perceive Native Americans -- these kinds of representations of another people add up to a skewed and Other-ed perception.

At its root, the problem is that Native Americans (for example) don't want their culture being spoken for by white people with the most marginal of interest in it

but outside of that, appropriation isn't a problem. IMO. It's not evil to have a little bit of interest in another culture and show it off. Your culture is not your property to be stolen -- people who think Iggy Azaelia is "appropriating" black culture need to stop trying so hard to put a bad spin on the fact that she's imitating the various rappers who came before her.

There used to be a point to complaining about appropriation. Now it's just used to say "hey, that's MY culture, you can't have it!" as if it's about whether you have the rights to a culture's intellectual property
