Maybe someone will find this little book interesting. Let's call it a primer on fasting. A lot has been written about intermittent fasting and most of that in regards with athletes and physically active population. This is for the rest of the population.
Seeing as how many people here treat loosing weight as a milder form of cutting, this might resonate with them as the premise of the fast is to abstain from food. This little book just let's you do it in a controlled manner.

Long, steady state cardio. Can be walking for example. Low-medium intensity for 1+ hours a day. Not the best for losing fat, but puts you in a catabolic state (eats your muscles) if you're in a calorie deficit.

Personally I don't recommend this because having muscle is better than having fat, and muscle mass helps keep metabolic rate high so makes it harder to gain fat and easier to lose it. End of the day each to their own, but if you lose a shitload of fat and get down to >10%, but have muscle (grill or not) you will have shape and look (and be) a little healthier. But it's your body.

You should be taking supplements if you're trying to diet right down. Calcium is very important as well as multi's and iron (especially for women). Get your doctor to run blood tests for any vitamin deficiencies and supplement accordingly (keep in mind you can just say you're interested, don't have to tell them you're losing weight).

If your cycle has stopped, however, and you want to have kids later on, stop losing weight. Your cycle will stop once you get below a certain bodyfat (women hold more fat than men). This is because your body is too skinny to be suited to childbearing. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but this generally means you have dropped below the healthy line. If you're not fussed on health, you can go lower, but if you care for your health and plan on getting pregnant one day, I'd put a little bit of weight (probably only 1-2 pounds) back on and keep it there.

I've been losing it (lost 40lbs so far) but probably have around another 40-50lbs to go. Work my ass off and diet. But I'm scared because I have stretch marks. Now even though they're not appealing, it's not them that bother me. It's loose skin, which is fucked up.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of it when I lose the weight? Will I ever have a decent body? I know surgery is an option when I get there, but can they do a good job?

From what I read (and I am by no means an expert) loose skin is the product of dropping weight too rapidly for the skin to catch up (pic related, some poor schmuck who lost around 100 freedom units in 3 months or so). So you could try to dial down the weight loss and see if your skin contracts.
The next option are various skin tightening creams, topical or herbal or whatever. The selection is vast so you should do some research to find what might help you. The last option is complete broscience but it needs to be mention for the sake of completeness - wearing compression clothing, let's say shirts and shorts. The bro reasoning is that it will speed up the skin contraction or something along those lines.
If all else fails there's always surgery which carries a risk of noticeable scars with it.

When you're in a calorie deficit, and restricting also the variety of foods that you eat, you should supplement.

For example, if you were 160lbs trying to get down to 120lbs, you might start to cut out dairy, fruits, fibrous grains and cereals, nuts etc. so what you are left with is meat, and if you cut out meat you are left with not much at all. So you aren't getting nearly enough vitamins and minerals to sustain healthy bodily function (note that bodily function includes brain, hormone, digestive, and repairative functions, literally everything is controlled by what we put in out bodies.)

You should be supplementing. Multivitamins, omega 3 oils, calcium, iron (especially if female) are pretty basic stuff, but it's not hard to go to the doctor and see where you're deficient (keep in mind that GPs aren't dieticians/nutritionists, but they can do the blood work and let you know what you need to fix before you get ill.)

If you were dieting down something that I see overlooked a lot is protein intake. A lot of people decide to eat a carbs only diet (bread and fruit are big ones) and think that it is better for weight loss than eating calorie dense, protein rich foods. These people are wrong.

You need protein guys and girls (~1g/lb body weight/day). Fats also (very roughly ~50g/day for bodily function). Doesn't necessarily *need* to be from meat and fish and eggs (although this is best), but you need that protein and fat for multiple reasons. Some basic uses your body has for fat is hormone function and regulation, as well as protein synthesis and nutrient absorbtion/transportation. Protein is required for maintaining muscle mass, for regenerative and immune function, regulation of metabolic rate, and the list goes on and on. It's also important (specifically gelatin and collagen proteins, found in animal products but easier to supplement) to stop your hair and skin from looking like droopy corpsey shit from being at a low body fat.

You can keep your calorie intake quite low by eating animal products (e.g dairy, meat, eggs) and this will keep you fuller and healthier, as well as getting some fats in. From there you can go nuts on green vegetables because they're very low calorie, yet nutrient dense. Carrots are also great (again low cal/high nutrient).

So there's a very (very very) basic guide. The sticky on /fit/ is very easy reading yet is much more informative and extensive, and I would recommend reading it.

Sorry for the long post but it's worth learning a bit about what you are doing and what your body needs so you can at least diet (and ffs exercise) down healthily.

Remember that the supplement and fitness industries (wherever they are commercialised) need to be taken with a grain of salt, and I always recommend doing a bit of research on what you're getting in to so that you can do it safely and with minimal side effects so that you don't end up skinny but feeling like shit and being brittle and lethargic and always sick.

Final point (thanks if you've read this far, I know I've carried on a bit): fad diets are for shit. I'm not going to say what you can and can't do, but stick with tried and tested methods and modify them if you need to to suit your needs/goals. This includes going vegan for the sake of losing weight. If you're vegan for moral reasons that's great, go you. But it's not ideal for everyone, and you don't need to cut out animal products to be skinny.

Also remember this:
If bodybuilders/fitness models can get down to single digit bodyfat and stay reasonably healthy you can too.

18m starting weight 185 down to 150 by restricting and sporadic cardio, goal weight 130
im definitely thinner but I don't want to look sickly or completely emaciated as I continue to lose weight so I was wondering /fa/s opinion on starting weight training while continuing to lose weight. Obviously I can't gain any mass but could it help with retaining the muscle that already have? Should I just commit to a greater consistency with the cardio? I know stronglifts 5x5 supposedly works well for beginners so maybe I'll try that. Also, if I'm trying to reduce muscle mass in my legs should I completely avoid running?(maybe it's not muscle mass and actually just fat idk)
