Same guy. Since I hate the gym and free weights (apart from deadlifts, they were fun), would it be dumb to try and achieve this with just weight machines? I know I should dedicate myself to something more but I don't stick to things so the gym 2/3 times a week, running 2/3 times a week and eating well are my current objectives

He's really small, no gainz to speak of. He's just really low bodyfat. You could achieve this just by eating less for a while and doing bodyweight exercises, so I don't see why weight machines would be any less effective. We all gotta start somewhere, just make sure you pay attention to your whole body. Jogging is fun by the way, but awful for your knees. Use elliptical trainers if you can.
And by the way, you hate free weights because you clearly haven't devoted any considerable amount of time to them. I don't think anyone lifts because they enjoy it per se- it's more for primal satisfaction of the labour and honing your strength while doing so. If you stick to the quest though, you'll learn about all that in time. Whatever you do, keep spending them calories.

Recently got back into swimming, striving for ottermode - working pretty well so far in combination with bodyweight training; hardest part is just keeping the weight on. I'm eating heaps but most of my fat goes to my thighs rather than my torso which is annoying, but what canya do.

Guys and girls like it/me. It's most about what you want though. I like it because I have functional strength (can do ever 15 pull ups) and look pretty good, and its relatively low maintenance (eat whatever, work out 2-4x week for 40mins).

well, there isn't really a reason not to use weights over gymnastic type training. yes you can get a great physique and amazing strength from it, but it requires much more time to do than weight training does.
if you want more mass on your chest arms and shoulders and shit then the objective best advice is to train with weights or you'll be waiting for years.
