lemme break this down for you op.
The Gameboy color is a legend itself and it has a plethora of classics associated with it but that won't be your most fun option and that non lit screen will make things slightly difficult. A backlit gameboy advance is another great option too, its aesthetic is fantastic imo. The psp 3000 is a better option and is one of the goats as well and fully lives up to its name and the game roster is fantastic. The psp vita is completely underrated and is one of the best handheld devices to be released by far: its basically like a portable ps4, it's functionality and graphics are god like for a handheld. I'd say its slightly better than a Nintendo 3ds if not, slightly above it. But, if you do buy a 3ds or even a 2ds, Super Smash brothers is a must have. And, you can always buy multiple systems as well.

This guy pretty much hit every nail on the head. Vita is goat but unfortunately is pretty much dead dev wise. Not sure if it has been hacked yet for homebrew and emulation (def hasn't been hacked to play vita backups), but if it has then definitely do that. If you can get the original OLED screen one then it'll be really a nice handheld to play everything on.
