non meme answer please. what's the difference in the way they dress?

Frat: tailoring is unimportant, loud and incongruous pastels, conspicuous branding, gaudy displays of daddy's wealth

Prep: more refined, earth tones are emphasized, subtly but easy to discern garment quality, tailoring, and elegance

Frat boys don't wear sweaters or if they do it's obnoxious patterned v-necks. Their colors are a lot brighter and often pastel shades. Frat boys wear ill fitting pants and often boat shoes.

Prep is collared shirts and some form of semi-formal pant like a khaki or wool pant. Prep often involves sweaters and uses darker tones: deep blues, earthy browns, etc. compared to the vivid uncoordinated colors of prep. Also boat shoes are rarely seen in prep style.

Old guy here. Boat shoes used to be a casual prep necessity with either shorts or khakis. You could throw on a pair of Bass Weejuns if you were going out someplace.
