It depends on your needs, I guess.
In my case, I have Arch on my laptop (a thinkpad x201 and it just werks, no need to fuck around config files to get trivial tasks done).
On the other hand, my other PC shit the bed with Arch. No sound, unconsistent behaviour, some keys not recognized... So I use Ubuntu on it.

For the DE, choose one that fit your idea of functionability. I have xfce as a backup when things go wrong (I know where to click from all my years as an ubuntu babbie).
Otherwise, I just use WMs. I like Openbox and I try to get used to i3.
Openbox is pretty easy to handle and there are great ressources online if you are interested in having a personnalised interface.

If you're truly persistent you always have the possibility of finding the fully specced out model for under $250. Personally I wouldn't spend over $300.

Macs are pretty great if you care about the case and looks. The os is nice as well, beats windows. I guess the hardware is overpriced compared to similarly priced alternatives, but the fact that the os is optimized for the hardware makes a huge difference. It's ridiculous. I used to be an apple hater, but until someone comes up with something similar with linux, I will probably use apple laptops.

There's a lot more to your experience with a laptop than how heavy it is. It's not even the biggest factor affecting portability. (Neither is thickness, which is something Apple sadly misses, because most of what they do is top notch otherwise. It's footprint.)

The Air kind of made sense at one point, but it's been thoroughly eclipsed in Apple's product lineup. If you want the most portable thing ever and don't need power? Get the Macbook: it's thinner, has a better quality display, and it has the portability of the 11.6" model with the better aspect ratio of the 13" model.

Need power? Get the rMBP. It's small enough.

The Air is their budget, "you're buying this because you're buying a Mac and DGAF past that" model now.

The Surface I haven't fucked with much, but it seems unimpressing.

Classic Thinkpad X series aren't as in-your-face nice as Macbooks and you don't get OS X without some shenanigans, but from a functional object standpoint they're nearly perfect portable workhorses. Durable, long battery life, good ports, the joystick mouse.

What we really need is a bastard cross of Macbooks, Thinkpads, and Toughbooks

Design it around the premise that laptops don't need to be exceptionally powerful, they need to be exceptionally flexible - in function and in terms of what kind of situations they can operate in - and, of course, a joy to use. Thunderbolt and Apple's success and engineering components down to fucking nothing makes this possible.

The guts don't have to be powerful - with Thunderbolt, you can offload most of the processing to an external GPU unit. Give it at least two.

(Besides battery and portability, the reduced thermal load makes it more reliable and lets you have it be fanless, which is fucking great.)

Other ports? Load it up with as many USB-C ports you can fit, maybe one or two full size USB ports so you can plug in old accessories and thumb drives without an adapter, an Ethernet jack, audio connection (two ports or integrated IDK it'd be a design decision you'd have to make based on what was possible given everything else), and an SD card slot.

No larger than 12"; I think a 9.7" panel like on the iPad flanked by speakers (to give it width for a keyboard with full size alphanumeric keys and shrunken function keys) would be ace. You can do any kind of work, even graphics work, on it, but if you need more real estate you can always plug it in somewhere else.

The battery is removable and sticks out the bottom, not the top, forming a carrying handle and a keyboard stand - a trick I saw on an old MSI netbook that I don't know why anyone hasn't repeated. It's hot-swappable, but even without it, it should be able to run for at least 20 hours without a change.

Design a new power connector for it, too - one with an optional locking connection you can engage so you just don't have to deal with that thing where your laptop plug slips off and you just CBA to plug it back in and then it's near dead.

Keyboard all the way to the back for a deep rest and large trackpad. As good of switches and you can fit in. And, of course, a joystick mouse in the middle.

Good quality camera, microphone, and networking (WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS) - all of which can be confidently disabled by hardware switches.
