Here's a test image I made. The hair is pretty hard to get right since it melts in with the dark background, but I managed to get it pixel perfect by comparing it with parts from the GIF-version of the shorter one. I removed the background and then I drew over parts of the picture, colour for colour, with magenta, which I later filled in using the pallete from the GIF. I've extracted the background from the GIF, so I'll just have to restore the parts of the frames with the girl, then I can overlay them all on the background (I'll still have to restore the wind parts), which will save time. This will still be extremely hard and time-consuming, so I might only make a single frame per day.

The windy background frames seem to be the same in both the short and the long version, and since the girl doesn't cover up any of the moving vegetation in the short version, I will only have to put the frames in the right order. This will speed up the process.

Can anyone try to check how the framerate works on Pixiv? The shorter GIF uses a variable framerate, and I'm unsure if Pixiv multiplies the framerate on their animated pics to make it work with a static framerate.

Good news everybody! I thought it would make it harder to make out the colours, but I discovered that by scaling the frames down to half with cubic interpolation (the original frames are upscaled so the pixels take up twice as much space), it's actually easier to see the outlines of the girl's hair! This will speed up the process.

Pic related: A frame where the hair doesn't have an equivalent in the shorter version.

That's the best I can do until someone pays to get Chihiro translated. I already paid for volumes 3 and 5 for the missing chapters. I'd be more than willing to chip in to get all five volumes translated if need be.
