I use a torch to blue the steel on the petals after shaping, it gives them a lot of depth in colour I think.

I dated a guy for awhile who was a sheet metal worker and he used to make really nice stuff like boxes and frames and such, but he didn't do welding, it was all folds and rivets and such.
