Let's say I owned 5 acres of land in Georgia.
Let's say I wanted to construct, or partially construct, a livable space - large enough to fit a bed, small kitchen area, small washroom space and a place to fit a computer. Would have plumbing and power. AC could be handled myself.
Let's say I didn't care for lots of bells and whistles.
Since it classifies as a home, how small a "house" could I make myself (or assisted with contractors) either from scratch or using a prebuilt structure like a large shed without building codes fucking my asshole?
I want a livable space that's cheaper than an apartment. As it stands my expendable money a month is $450, and that's before food costs; there are no apartments worth dying in below $550.
What are my options?

depends on where you live.
It's different by state, county, and even city sometimes.

This. Typically, if you build it on a trailer, you can classify it as a temporary structure, and ignore a lot of building code bullshit. That's what most people do when they build these tiny house cucksheds.

Quick question because I don't want to fuck up my project: What pilot hole size should I drill for #8 3/4" wood screws into North American birch plywood? Domestic birch is a hardwood, right? I do not have tapered bits.

This chart says I should be using a 1/8" straight bit. Can anyone confirm this to be accurate?
>>

Hold the drill bit up in front of the screw, with the shank of the bit in line with the threaded portion of the screw. If you can see the threads, but little to no shank, poking out behind the bit on both sides of it you're good to go. Hope that makes sense.

Hand tools. Buy used from CriagsList, garage/estate sales, local auctions and, if you catch a screaming deal for some reason, eBay. Avoid newer hand tools. Anything made after 1970 or so falls into one of two categories: cheap shit from Asia and high end very expensive made in the West. You can't afford the latter and you don't want the former.

Get a miter box. Picture related, not some plastic piece of shit either. I've picked up old ones in useable shape for $10 with the saw. Millers Falls, Stanley and Goodell/Goodell-Pratt made good ones that are easy to find. They use what is called a 'backsaw'.

Saws: Disston made the gold standard of hand saws. They made millions of them. Anything made before HK Porter bought them out is good. They are plain steel so you can sharpen them yourself with just a triangular file. So, don't let a dull one that is cheap scare you off. They can be sharpened hundreds of times, so practice practice practice. YouTube for instructions.

Hand drills: North Bros (and later Stanley, who bought them out) and Millers Falls. All good quality drills and tools in general.

That is really all you need to get started. In general, any tool made by Stanley before the 1970s or so will be good. Millers Falls is just a step behind them in quality. Many Craftsman woodworking tools were made for them by these two companies so keep and eye out for them too.

YouTube can teach you everything you need to know. Paul Sellers on YouTube know his hand tools. The Woodwright's Shop (PBS show) is great for some inspiration. Learn how to search to find what you need. If you want more help than that from us you are probably going to need to pick a project, research it, and come back if you get stuck. Otherwise, this thread is probably going to turn into a tool brand pissing contest, people telling you to google it, or just telling you to give up entirely.

Pretty neat concept. But given the availability of propane and other fuels there is no need. Also it's rather inefficient as it requires large amounts of wood. But it's an interesting idea. It would certainly be something to know how to build should society collapse. However most among would be living in shipping containers and living off imitation crab meat anyway.

I think the need depends on the situation. If you're homesteading and have tons of trees you want to cut down, then it'd be pretty legit. Or if you want a back up heating system/generator fuel system for the apocalypse.

Hello /diy/,

Im creating a datalogger which measures a lot of variables ( kek)
one of them its from an irrometer (Watermark sensor 200SS) Which gives a 10-1000 centibars range value which needs to be converted into humidity according to this graph

http://www.irrometer.com/basics.html#use (check it till you see a graph of cb vs available water depletion)

So, this is where i need help, how to convert cb to humidity according to the graph. (sample program and equation would be appreciated :D)

I'm having a family 4th of July party at our new property which is currently an empty lot. We're renting tents, tables, chairs, porta-potties (the better kind that flush), and I'm bringing my generator. Anyway:
>a few guests, specifically my grandparents are really old and obese
>I'm not sure if they handle the heat all day
Are there any outdoor fans that blow cold air? I've tried to look it up but have only seen temporary ice packs

>>
>>1200399
You want an air conditioner really.
I think some Dyson fans do cold as well as heat? But I wouldn't buy one out of principle
>>
>>1200399
low humidity area? one of those swamp coolers maybe

otherwise a enclosed tent with a A/C and a decent generator (5+KW)
>>
>>1200399
any kind of fan/air movement is good in heat - you start with AC and shit tho, you can probably reconfigure your gennie requirements, cooling for food/drink, etc.? - an HF noise and fumes special aint gonna cut it. You building there anyway, get the power on if poss, my advice.

I just bought pic related for $60 and it's sat in the corner scaring the shit out of me. I have no welding experience at all and I'm about to assemble this electrocution kit. I'm modifying a cafe racer motorcycle and only need a welder for about ten joints, so went with this cheap blue box.

One thing that is troubling me is the tiny diameter of the cable relative to the large brass housing; am I really supposed to double the wire back on itself? Also, I can't find anything about this model online. I'm afraid I may have gone a little too cheap. If anyone has seen this model before, or has experience in this price range, will this thing be okay for one project?

>>

>electrocution kit
that's only a risk if you jam the welding rod in your anus and put the ground clamp on your tongue

that cable gauge looks fine, and you're supposed to wrap the strands with the copper and the screw clamps down on it, but are the cables really like ~2 feet long???

Let's say you have a 180 degree fisheye lens which you need to completely cover with a DIY shutter assembly (can be 3D printed), while making sure the shutter and assembly stay completely out of the field of view. The shutter needs to be powered by a single servo motor.

Would this even be possible to do? How would /diy/ begin to design such a thing?

>>
>>1200298
Oh and when I say 'stay out of the field of view' I mean when the shutter is open.
>>
>>1200298
copy an iris from a camera, those can usually be actuated with a solenoid/spring
>>
>>1200303
Nope, the ring containing the iris/aperture parts would be seen within the 180 degree field of view.

It would need to be some kind of assembly that flipped up from below the side of the lens. Likely not possible

So two of my office chair's leg snapped (it's plastic) and I'm wondering if it's possible replace the base using another office chair's base. But I'm not sure if all office chair's have the same base size so I'm asking here. Google mostly returns gas cylinder replacement searches and almost zero base repairs.

>>
>>1200223
Measure it with calipers or such then head to your local state surplus and pick up a similar base (w/ chair) for about $20. Keep in mind some cylinders taper some dont so make sure you get the right type base. If you go a little to big you can always pad the cylinder out to fit.

I had a phone interview today. I tried to fake being really optimistic, meanwhile I'm like full blood pessimist where life is meaningless. I think it went pretty well.

In any case I think you should just come in wearing nice and clean stuff, like dockers khaki pants and a shit with a few buttons on the collar, but not all the way down. Plain sneakers are fine as long as they aren't like crazy red color or something that is going to get attention.

I'd like to build a new custom dashboard for my car, and apparently fiberglass would be a light and hard material to make it from. I have never dealt with fiberglass before, so I'm definitely going to need whatever advice I can get for it.

The planned designs are going to be intentionally crude with lots of square and angular shapes, but I have no idea what is needed for the mold. Cardboard covered with trashbags would sound easy, but from what I've heard the chemicals used would melt through the trashbags and soak the cardboard beneath. What would you suggest? And is fiberglass a good idea in the first place?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
you want ugly? fiberglass is your shit.

Make a honeycomb out of 1/4" ply wood and lay up the fiber.

To make the honeycomb of wood, you have to take sections from the 3d design and place them every 250cm.

then you do at least two layers of fiber, and epoxy, followed by a 80grit shaping and a gel coat.

If you are really this clueless look up how to make a small sailboat, there are books at the thing callled a biblioteca. Maybe they call it "library" in your part of the third world?

Anon get a junkyard dash or build a center console first to practice.

Staple a wood frame with feace or old sweartshirts to soak up the resin. Than lay 2 layers at a time of mat over it until your happy with it. Sand and bondo amd paint or hit it with 60 grut and rhino liner it.

Hey /diy/ers,

Im making a large (16"x20"x45") UV cure box to cure my SLA 3D prints, made out of acrylic.

I need advice on the UV bulb placement.

Pic is the general design, a box with a sliding door (because I dont want to deal with hinges and acrylic), and racks for more room.

Should the bulbs be coming in from the left and right side (so they are parallel to the back face), or should they be coming in from the back side (perpendicular to the back face)...

Any input is appreciated.

How do you remove a plaque that's held on solely by something like silicone sealant?
18 posts and 4 images submitted.

Simply keep jabbing and scraping at it, like the google results all seem to suggest?

I think the back is completely covered in the silicone as well, so that would take literal hours, and may very well damage the surface.

Or is there a solvent or something?

Hey guys I'm making a handheld PVC launcher (it's not a weapon so please no ban). The design will be exactly like pic related. The only problem I have come across is the nichrome wire in the tube. I'm afraid it will melt the tube with all the heat it puts out. I'm also wondering if the nichrome wire will even set off the fuse. Does it need an actual open flame to light it, or will the heat from the wire suffice? Is there anything I can put into the pipe that will keep it from melting?

If you see any other flaws in my design, please point them out.

How is this not a weapon? It's a fucking cannon.
>>
>>1199737
Fire needs 3 things, heat air fuel. Fire isn't one of those 3 things. Autoignition happens at a set temperature for a set material.

Work out what temperature your wire will reach and find an insulator that won't melt at that temperature. Ceramic probably, maybe wood in a pinch.
Even metal as long as it doesn't have enough time to heat up to melt whatever it's touching. Blowtorch is basically all metal but your hands don't burn do they?
Not enough energy to heat the whole thing because it loses heat too. Trial and error if you can't do the maths.
Electrical insulators are also heat insulators, that's a tip if you are looking for glass or ceramic insulators.
>>
