Hi all. I never crafted anything before. And I want to make ancient style notebook with a cover similar to "necronomicon" to keep my RPG notes in. Also want to make a feather pen. I searched a little and there is no suitable notebook in my country and worldwide sites cost it too expensive. Can anyone suggest me any easy and practical method and kinda cheap materials for this?

I want to refurbish this old-ass sewing machine that I have, but I don't want to rebuild the entire thing.
The existing grease on all the mechanical parts is old. Really old. It's also dirty as fuck (not my sewing machine but pic related).
I want to strip and re-lubricate all of the mechanical parts, what would be my best option? Is there something that I can shoot in there that'll just eat away all the grease that it hits, that I can remove without causing rust?
I just shot brake cleaner + goo gone in there, washed it out with water and immediately followed with WD-40 to stop rust, and then re-greased it with Aluminum grease but I feel like I could do better.

I wouldn't take it apart, just clean in place. Use some 3 in 1 out better yet kroil as a cleaning solution. When you are done some light gear should keep it moving smooth, but a lot of those joints aren't meant for grease but rather oil, try to dig up the owner's manual, it covers everything. I refurbed a 1923 singer and it works pissah now, my sewing skills otih need work
>>
>>1207343
I'm pretty surprised that the gears wouldn't need grease... The existing gears certainly seemed greased as fuck, perhaps that's why it was so gunked up if that wasn't intended.
If I were to use Kroil, how would I get it out? It seems like that stuff eats at oil, then stays. Wouldn't it fuck up any new lubricant that I shot in there?
Sorry for the noob questions, I know almost nothing about mechanics.
>>
>>1207337
DONT TAKE ANYTHING APART.

The timing on sewing machines is almost fucking impossible to set without special tools. Wheel bearing grease from any automotive shop and forget about it for the next 50+ years.

Dont worry about dirt and shit getting in the grease. Old machines are made like tanks. WW2 surplus steel. Some of the WW2 tank factories were bought by Singer and used to make sewing machines.

You need a new roof my friend. They are breaking down and starting to curl. Happens when the tar bond strip breaks down and also happens as the shingle degrades from heat. Price out some good 30 year shingles. Or go with standing seam metal.

I am planning on converting my one car garage into a home gym/workshop space. In doing so, I plan to replace the (broken) electric slide up door with carriage doors (like pic related).

The problem is that I want a good way to get light and air into the garage without leaving the doors open. The garage has no windows or other doors, and while my area is generally safe I'm sure opportunists would steal things if I just left the doors open while I'm not in it. So what's an easy way to allow in light and ventilation without leaving the doors open?

I've thought about installing plexiglass windows but that is relatively pricey and they won't open, so no good for air. I've considered proper windows, but they are expensive and would make the project much more complex (I think, I've never built a window before). Maybe a gate behind the door or behind the top of a dutch door would work? Would really love thoughts/plans on this. Thanks in advance!

Dimensions of the doorway are about 88 inches wide and 75 inches tall. Garage itself is 8 feet by 18 feet. I have plenty of access to dimensional lumber, tools, and basic hardware, but I'd like to do the project as cheaply as I can.

ReStore. Buy used windows for cheap. Do you care if they are single pane?
>>
>>1206890
By "ReStore" you mean the thing run by habitat for humanity? Are their windows in good shape? I looked at getting some old windows on craigslst but the kind of restoration they would need wasn't worth my time.

I don't care if they are single frame, but how much of a pain is it to put the windows in? Do I have to build a jamb? I was just thinking of doing a double basic, lightweight, board and batten door.
>>
>>1206891
Depends on your store. Most of the ones my store gets are from renovations. I'm out west so generally single pane, aluminum frame windows. Nothing wrong with them, just old, ugly, and poor thermal properties. I wouldn't bother with used wooden frame windows unless you know what you are doing or they are in very good shape. Scraping and painting is one thing but dealing with windows that won't slide or that are out of square is another.

Opinions on buying a warehouse to kit out as a personal workshop/studio/living space?

>living space
Probably illegal where you live. The insulation will also probably be shit. Might not have hot water service or any water at all. Don't count on a sewer/septic either.

A used RV or trailer would be better and probably cheaper from a living standpoint. As a workspace, well, yeah, it will be good. It is kind of what they are intended for.

By watching traffic too/from the location. In all reality there isn't much they can/will do as long as you are maintaining the property correctly and not causing problems.

Sup, /diy/.
My Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I front sight blade will not stay put. It's loose enough to be moved back and forth with bare fingers.

So I was thinking about doing this:
- apply a thin layer of solder to the bottom of the blade to get a tighter fit
- lightly tap the sight into the correct position (already measured it)
- flow some more solder into the gap so that the blade stays put by friction alone
- blacken the whole thing over a candle

And yes, I know that it won't be an actual joint if I use tin/lead solder on steel. But all I need is to introduce enough friction to the assembly for the blade to STAY in the fucking groove under recoil.
My question for you is, will the tin solder actually spread across the surface and adhere strongly enough for the blade to be tapped into the groove? Or will it bead up and not stick at all, or flake right off?

>just silver solder it you retard
Can't. The temperatures required are too high to use here.

>just stake it retard
Can't. It's simply too loose for that, also I don't want to put any permanent marks on the rifle.

>just loctite it retard
Again, too loose.

>it will melt right off when you shoot the rifle you retard
Nope, measured it and the sight base never gets nearly hot enough.
Maybe if I actively tried to get the rifle as hot as physically possible, but that's obviously not a concern.

Pic only slightly related.

Thanks!

> Car Audio

To start this off, I'm not looking to create a carputer. I have an EE degree but I am a software developer by profession so anything below I _could_ do.

I have an older subaru with a decent touch screen head unit that can hook up to an iPod and control it through the touch screen of the radio (this is the only reason I am going this route). I could just hook the iPod up and call i t a day but I find it a hassle (plus I don't use iTunes on any of my PCs) to unhook and load music.

I'd like to create a storage device that interfaces with the head units iPod controls. The pin outs for the old generation apple connectors is out there so this isn't going to be an issue.

> Storage
Any ideas on storage? Should I just go with a large SD card? I don't need a massive amount of space. Just enough for turn over

> High availability
I want the unit to turn on and be ready by the time the head unit has booted or right after. Rasbpis unless you gut one of the OS take ages to boot.

> Wifi
I'd like to be able to sync to a service I will create on my home network to update new music and remove music

> Microprocessor/Controller
Any thoughts on newer chips? I have two STMF4s (~2012), TI random controllers, and some other random things.

This doesn't need to be in a breakout board or something like a raspbi/arduino. I can do circuit design and pcb design.

SD card is ideal for embedded because you don't have to deal with host usb shit, saying that its becoming more and more commonly supported in smaller devices.
What you need to consider is the audio conversion, typically with a small micro you need an external chip to convert mp3 for example to audio. Maybe you could do it in software if you don't value your time or sanity.
> WiFi update
I don't know what to say to this, I was with you the whole way but this kind of boils my piss.

> iPod
You don't need iTunes for iPods, I have a Linux box in the garage for obd2 and its happy to talk to an old iPod that I interfaced with a head unit with a pic pretending to be a cd changer.

I would figure out the ipod if I were you, if you fancy a fuck around then just connect a pi or some shit into the battery so its always on. Find out what your alarm draws to compare, it's going to be peanuts, car won't care.

Seems like you fucked up making yours. Don't blame the parts. Blame yourself for not constructing it correctly. Your logic is like saying a tree will make you hate woodworking, because it isn't lumber you buy from the store, because when you tried it everything split.

Those are basically the same thing I think. I have one that doesn't work for shit. Now it just sits in my garage reminding me to never buy cheap shit again.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips, special knowledge or experience with permanently dyeing faux leather. It sounds simple: spray on and let it dry. Done. But I'm just wondering whether it rubs off, and also whether there might be some way to first treat the material making it absorbent somehow.

A quick google search yielded this.

https://www.polytek.com/tutorial/colored-dyes-polyurethane-plastic-polyurethane-rubber

If your faux leather is already dyed you may have a hard time getting it the color you want, as you can only dye to a darker color with the results being a mix of the original and the new color.

Deoxit is too expensive in Bongland.

Also cannot seem to find another contact cleaner that has remove oxide actions like Deoxit. All the ones I checked only contained some solvents or alcohol but nothing that actually removes oxide.

Upon some googling it seems that some people have recreated a contact cleaner solution that performs similar to Deoxit by mixing oleic acid into some solvent in a 1 in 20 ratio (5%).

Just wanted to check here if anyone has attempted the same formula and what is your opinion on it, or if there is any affordable and good contact cleaner I can get in Bongland anyone can recommend?

Thanks.

>>1204508
They don't claim to remove oxidation (like all the others) so that is why I am trying to find something similar to Deoxit which claims to remove oxidation

I also found another local brand "Comma" which says it removes oxidation but their msds (The Russian one has the full list of ingredients) doesn't contain any compound for this purpose other than the usual solvents and alcohol so it wouldn't actually remove oxide

A flir what? You realize they have thousands of products and nobody is going to look up what your model number corresponds to. I assume you got a thermal camera and to that I ask why?

You realize bed bugs don't really produce enough heat to be recognizable outside of circumstances you would already easily be able to see them right?

A room with any light source will have enough of a differential heat signature that no bed bugs will stand out
>>

>A flir what?
........Um, screen shot?

> You realize they have thousands of products
I doubt that. Check the screen shot for the *one* product I ordered.

>nobody is going to look up what your model number corresponds to.
I'm not expecting anyone to do such thing. I just want some cool ideas for things to do with a thermal camera. ...........you know, cause not everyone has a chance to use one and this is a pretty cool opportunity.

>I assume you got a thermal camera
Bingo sherlock; had you read my message, you'd know why. (hint: for bed bug extermination) Just for further clarification, this thermal camera (Just for clarification: it's a thermal camera), is to expose any cool spots that the bed bugs will hide. (Bed bugs hide in cool spots) ....just fyi, bed bugs hide in spots that are less than 120 F and this thermal camera will expose those spots. ......it's a thermal camera, just fyi

>You realize bed bugs don't really produce enough heat to be recognizable outside of circumstances you would already easily be able to see them right?
sherlock, I been at war with these things for a very long time. The reason I bought a thermal camera (just for clarification it's a thermal camera) is because I need an instrument to verify I left no cold spots behind (it's a thermal camera)

>A room with any light source will have enough of a differential heat signature that no bed bugs will stand out
