How the fuck do you stop office chairs from wobbling? Every single god damn chair I've tried wobbles when you're trying to sit straight and center the seat, it's infuriating.
I just bought a new chair 3 days ago, didn't wobble a bit. Now it wobbles so god damn much I'd rather sit on the fucking floor and break my entire spine.
It only wobbles if you're not leaned back and are sitting straight, so the seat is flat. If I lean backwards, it doesn't wobble and I can't force it.
All the screws on the seat are fastened really tight and I get a feeling like it's coming from the piston itself, at the point where the seat lies on the piston.
I can't even slide anything inside the seat where the piston goes because there's no room, not even for paper.
Is there seriously no remedy in CURRENT YEAR?

hello people! need some help with this electric screwdriver. pic related is all its guts, from left to right you have the charger circuit, the batteries (called like that?), a switch that i guess inverts polarity to choose rotation (that also has a led as laternand then the motor. simple right?

well internal charge always sucked,i guess it wasnt properly charged the first times.. thing is that this baby is mine now so i sayd fuck it lets make it powered by some power adaptor s i can connect it to the wall, in the next post i tell yo my problem when i tried that

if i screwed up with some names or simple gramatic please take in consideration that english aint my native tounge :)

those batteries will provide far more current than your adapter, either replace the batteries/charging circuit or get a much bigger adapter

this are the internal bat's
1.2v each connected in series.. so im guessing the motor eats 3.6v. the charging adaptor is 5v dc 300mah.

a friend of mine told me this things need a lot of mp's to work..so i tried connecting it directly to the 3v and then to the 5v line. first with the rotation swtich on then directly to the motor. but it never turned.

what can i be doing worng? what shoukld i try? can i have burned the motor? the screwdriver was working before dissembled

damn, sorry for explaining bad, i missed a line and it was that i tried using a pc power supply as a power source for this unit as they give a lot of amp's, thats why i said i tested the 3 and 5v lines..no luck though, and thakns for the fast reply!

This is the circuit board from a new comcast voice control remote. are these gold circles i'm looking at? They scratch fairly easily but i dont know much about gold or gold recovery.

They're gold plated. Nicer circuit boards use a process called ENIG to plate exposed copper to improve corrosion resistance.

In cheap, mass-produced electronics, sometimes bare pads are used as contacts for membrane switches, which is what you have here.

Note that the amount of gold on the entire board is best measured in micrograms, so it's not exactly worth much.

Howdy /diy/!

I've got somewhat of an energy use puzzle on my hands.

Moved into a 100 year old house last August, and have been consistently using over 600 kWh every month. This seems really high to me, and most data I could find seemed to indicate that others in our area were using anywhere from 300-500 a month at the most.

The details:

>Two person household
>Gas for heat
>Electric water heater, but it is brand new and energy star rated
>We unplug everything that we are not using
>Only one of us is home most of the day
>No Tesla Coils on the roof
>Gas cooking range
>No AC at all

It's possible that we are using that much, but it seems really high for just the two of us. Any ideas? Could there be an issue with metering? Somebody stealing electricity? Some household appliance (like a fridge) that's sucking a ton of energy without me knowing?

The attached picture is our use.

>how to concrete

I have this post that goes right through the basement floor into the dirt beneath it. The beam is practically all gone and I dont believe it supports much of anything now. I can move and shake it pretty well... I'm thinking of taking out the post, filling the hole with concrete then add a new post in.

My experience with concrete or this kinda project is nil. Any pointers on pouring concrete to fill a hole? One that looks to go straight into the dirt beneath the foundation? Any kind of backing I should use or type of cement?

What about replacing the post? I have a carpenter friend who could help me with it but again i'm open to suggestions.

thanks in advance

Prop structure held by pole
Cut post
Remove post
Clean concrete somewhat
Remove small amount of dirt from hole
Pour coffee can's worth of mixed quickCrete
Smooth while wet
Place post on concrete
Attach new post to old structure
>>
Oops, also let the concrete dry first
>>
Support the weight elsewhere, cut about a half inch off above the concrete, and hammer in a half inch thick welding shim under the pole.
Easy.

depending on the topology it can limit your operating range. that is to say, you'll only have zvs under certain conditions so you may end up having to design for full switching losses anyway. also it's more harder.

Trying to get into the electrician trade, anyone got advice?

I don't have any related schooling besides a BS in theatre (hue), and at this point I just want to work rather than study for two more years at a trade school. I've got an okay understanding of theory and the basics, just don't know what type of apprenticeship would be most desirable. Industrial? Commercial? Residential? And aside from 'ask questions and show up on time,' are there any sage words y'all can clue me in on?

I've sent in a couple applications to various places, planning on doing more. Hopefully I'll get a call within a week or two.

Pic is the most related one on my phone lul

If you can't get an apprenticeship you're effed. You could try moving to an area in need of electricians, but it sounds like you're a poorfag either unable or unwilling to move away unless someone else flips the bill - and paid relocation isn't really a thing anymore since it's cheaper to hire within and train them over the internet whereas in the 90's and prior it was sometimes cheaper to hire and relocate than to hire within and send them away for training.

Alright /diy/ here's the story.
I JUST fucking payed an AC guy to "fix" a problem I was having with one of my air conditioners in the house, fan outside wasn't running. He apparently rewired it so it would run now with no problems. AC worked fine throughout the day and night.
>next day
The second AC unit in the house (one for upstairs) just stopped working. Unit inside turns on, fan outside is NOT turning on, just like the one from yesterday. AC guy is out on holiday and couldn't come today nor tomorrow, though I really do not want to pay him another $60 for this or roast alive for the next 48+ hours.
So after looking online for hours on what to do, I cleaned out the condensate pipes outside, like pic related, except I have 3 of them (3 AC units total).
Few hours later, the SAME AC THAT GOT """"FIXED""""" YESTERDAY is no longer blowing out cold air, or at least not very strong. The fan outside is running and the unit is running as well.
The second AC that stopped working earlier today's fan still isn't working.

What do? It's 90 degrees fahrenheit now, at night..

>>
>>1203821
You're retarded. You should be paying him more.

Your fan not running has nothing to do with a condensation line. If your fan motor was bad he probably should have replaced it same day, unless it was after 5 or something, but sometimes A/Cs have odd fans you have to order.

You don't have the know-how to find out if the fan is powered or not, and that's the important part. You can't do it. If it's getting power but not spinning, you may have a bad motor or a bad capacitor. If you don't have power to the fan, you may have a bad relay, transformer, breaker, etc.
>>
>>1203821
Window units? Don't they only last like 7 years and only cost like $150? No point in dropping another $120 on two busted ACs. Just get new ones. Or, save up your pennies and invest in a house size AC of some type. Central, split unit, whatever. Something that will last more than a few seasons. If you rent, well, just kill yourself and get it over with.

Hi /diy/

I want to build a homemade drone that is capable of flying to a different country, I want to fly it all the way to a country like Syria and fly over Raqqa and then maybe fly home if possible.

I want to attach a a camera to the bottom which can relay video and I also want to be able to still retain control if possible though I would settle for preprogramming the route I want it to take.

For power I am thinking solar if possible, it will be extremely lightweight and plan on making it a scale replica of a US Military drone.

How would I achieve this?

What would I need to enable me to send back video feeds? How can I change flight plans that far away from home?

I have build drones and flown them from different cities but they usually just lose video unless I attach a cell phone with 4G but I don't think this will work well that far?

It's my dream /diy/.

It's legit not bait, I have built prototyles and flown them to a different city and back and never lost a drone except for when one crashed nearby but I found it and got my phone and salvaged the parts back.

If you violate another country's airspace you are committing a number of serious offences, probably even terror related.

if it falls on a populated area in another country you will be in deep deep shit.

Anyone here have any experience with certain brands?

I know Shaublin, Bridgeport and pre 80s South Bend are the shit to get but what about new manufacture import?

I don't mind getting an import knee mill or bench lathe and converting (or building from scratch) new ones that ride on air bearings and then probably CNC.

I keep seeing brands like Grizzly, (South Bend), Jet, Precision Matthews and Kent but I have no idea where to start.

The first place to start is real machinist forums. Practical Machinist is educational, then hit home shop machinist forums.

>I don't mind getting an import knee mill or bench lathe and converting (or building from scratch) new ones that ride on air bearings and then probably CNC.

You have too much to learn for one thread and you fucking need to study MUCH more. Fuck bench lathes and tiny import junk. They exist to piss off owners.

The best way to go is get smart about a variety of industrial machines so you know what to look for. Everyone hears about Bridgeport but Excello, Wells-Index, Tree and others are excellent.

Forget conversions until you know a LOT more. That means doing a lot of fucking reading, following links to yet more reading, and learning how to move machines without paying a rigger (which besides saving you mad cash can let you move machines from places no forklift can reach.) Google "moving a Bridgeport" to see the principles of moving many different machines.

You also need to abandon /diy/ for machine tool questions. You'll be glad you did, so do it.

Pic is how I've moved several milling machines, grinders and lathes. The wide outriggers are a touch I've never seen elsewhere so I spread the word because my method is exceptionally stable, safe and cheap. Orange channels are bolted to machine base by dropping all thread through the base and holes drilled in the channel. Green outriggers are then attached to the orange channel. You hold the allthread (use quality Grade 5 or better allthread) with visegrips and tighten the top nut to raise the machine off the floor. When all four corners are snug I winch the machine. onto a trailer and tie it down securely. It can't tip and is easy to handle. When doing a mill I usually cut two four foot sections of four inch angle and bolt underneath the mill so I can also fit a pallet jack beneath it for final positioning.

Thanks alot, I've been lurking around there for a couple years. Just poking DIY to see what's going on here.

Hey guys, I want your advice/opinion on what brand/model of these items you would suggest. I want the decent OK priced ones. I don't need the best of the best. I'm looking on Home Depot and reviews are not leading me to a reliable model.

I'm asking for opinion on this equipment because I'm about to move from a apartment to a house and need to build my supply of necessities as far as tools and equipment go.

Preferably if these things could be found in store at a home depot or lowes I'd appreciate it.

I need a...

Hand truck (like in pic related) preferably one that can lay flat also.

ladder probably around 10 foot tall would be good.

toolset if there is any single good toolset.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.

You're not going to have much of a selection. The Home Depot and Lowes and Ace Hardware all have pretty much the same options as far as ladders and hand trucks go. And as far as tools go, you'll have to buy each one individually. One tip you need to keep in mind when it comes to tools is ou get what you pay for. If it's something you want to make a career out of, spend the extra few bucks. If it's just to do a quick job, then buy whatever you want, but if you want to start a shop or something, you want quality. Trust me.

Thanks, I guess I'll continue with the Home Depot selection. So far I landed on this handtruck http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cosco-Shifter-300-lb-2-In-1-Convertible-Hand-Truck-and-Cart-12222PBG1E/205430398

Yeah those are really popular right now. I've never experienced any issues with them, but there are so many pieces and things that could go wrong, that I'm weary of them. If they have anything else go for the solid ones that are just one piece. I guess it depends on what you're moving tho. If it's boxes n shit, that one you showed would be ok. If it's like a bucket of copper parts or something, you'd want the solid one. Just my two cents.

I want to rebuild pic related. I'm pretty sure I'm capable of it but I lack a press and large gear puller.

Can anyone with experience tell me if I can get it done without them?
I'm currently toying with the idea of using a bottle jack and 2x4s to rig a press, but that doesn't exactly seem like it would work if I needed to apply any real force.

Yes you can make a press using a jack and wood, but be aware that if it fails it can seriously injure you.

You can borrow pullers for free (refundable deposit) at places like auto zone, but if you do this sort of work you should eventually buy your own.

Also, you will probably need snap ring tools and special tools to align things; quite often you can rig up or do without special tools, but be aware that you might hit a road block and have to carry the pile of parts to a pro.

Get a manual. If you don't have a really good manual you will probably screw up.

Good luck. I rebuilt similar but simpler transmissions years ago. It's fun if you know what you are doing (or can figure it out) and you have adequate tools. If you lack either it's an exercise in frustration.
>>
>>1207941

I suppose everybody here already knows this, but if part 206 is a pressed in bushing there is a cool way to remove it. Pack it nearly full of grease, and place a rod in it that is a good fit. Then hit the rod with a large hammer, and the grease will partly spurt out around the rod, but will also push the bushing out a bit. Repeat as needed.
