Took a few pictures whilst I was upgrading my old 30L stovetop brewpot into a much better electric brew kettle. I'll dump them with a bit of commentary/walk through if there's any interest.

I'd be interested to see how you did things. Electric seems to be the way to go. More flexibility over propane.

bear in mind what I was starting with was just an old stockpot that I've been using and in the UK the wattage required is available just from the wall at 240V 13A.
Started by sorting out all the parts I'd ordered.
Had to bend the outer washer on the tap to fit the bend of the brew kettle as the wall was fairly rigid

what's a trade/profession that doesn't require thousands of dollars worth of tools?

You can Start almost anything with somewhere between $0 and $50 in hand tools but you need to increase that investment over time. Electricians, Mechanics, Carpenters and the like build up their collections as needed.

Maybe getting a job on an assembly line, if you can still find one, taking two screws from a bin and screwing them down in two places with a drill hanging on a cable, for eight to ten hours a day but human-as-a-robot is not really a trade.

I have 3 smoke/heat alarms in my flat, and cooking has never set one off

Any idea why hers is so sensitive? Or how I could stop it going off EVERY FUCKING TIME SHE COOKS? RAAAR

They are supposed to be installed behind a door in another room away from the kitchen. Not in the kitchen or in an open space that can't be closed off near the kitchen. At least that is what the instructions on all the ones I've installed read.

I'm trying to remove the fuel line from the carburetor to change the filter on a '74 coupe deville.
The two fittings are stuck together and want to move as one, though the larger fitting is loose from the carburetor. If I try to turn both together it wants to twist the fuel line, which I'm afraid will kink and break.

How should I go about getting the fittings off? I've tried using two wrenches as well as a wrench and vise grips, but there's very little room to work with and I'm afraid of further stripping the hex.

whats on the other end of the solid fuel line? does it switch to rubber hose that you could remove and just let the solid line spin?

assuming you've tried wd-40/ pb blaster on it?
>>
>>1207355
The solid line snakes it's way all the way around and down to the fuel pump, so I can't let it spin unless I remove all the other hoses and such on top of it. Trying to avoid doing all that just to change a simple fuel filter.
Tried WD-40, don't have any pb blaster. Only other thing I can find on google is to use flare nut wrenches, which I would have to buy as I don't have any. Just hate to have to buy tools for such a simple thing.
>>
>>1207354
Need a brake line wrench or 2 or just rip it off and run rubber line and a cheap filter.

My moms porch door has drooped on the opposite side to the hinges, by about 5 mm. Now the deadbolt and lock won't engage

Is this fixable? Any idea what caused it? It still seems solid, no play. Hinges look fine
29 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Go to the top hinge and remove two screws that hold hinge to jam. Replace them with long 3" or 4" drywall screws, screw them in real tight. Should pull jam back enough to get door to latch again.
>>
>>1210776
the hinges look absolutely fine. it's as if the lock side has just slid downwards

if you look at it when closed, there is a triangle shaped gap at the top, but the hinge side is perfectly plumb, as is the lock side
>>
>>1210783
I realize that. The problem is settling. Often doing what I said is an easy fix it pull the top of the door back slightly. Otherwise remove striker plate re-mortise the jam and re-install striker plate. Been remodeling 30+ yrs...seen it all

My goal is to re-wire a salvaged hydraulic system and use it for my own purposes. The hydraulic components were originally connected to a control board, which I would like to bypass. I have successfully required the pump motor, and I believe the only thing left to do is re-wire the directional valve. I do not know what power supply to use.

Thing runs off solenoid valves. They're the back cylinder things under the valve body the wires run too. They should have a dataplate or sticker telling you if they're ac or dc and what voltage they operate at.
>>
If they're missing the sticker/plate best way to find out is hook up the controller to power and probe their outputs to find the correct polarity, current and voltage to run them at. Alternatively you can use the googles to look up replacement parts for the unit and specs for said parts.

Anyone know of a solar charge controller that can supply power both day and night? It would achieve this, I imagine, by having 2 batteries, one not charging during the day while the other one does

Preferably a cheap one or DIY. It doesn't have to handle more than 1/2 amp, I just want it for some LED lighting in my garage

>>
>just posting this in case I forget this idea in the morning

Maybe I could just have it run directly from the panel when the lights are, using a mosfet or relay to control disconnecting the battery. . .

Though I'm using an ATtiny and motion sensor and I don't want the AVR to lose power. I suppose a large enough cap would supply enough power during the transition
>>
>>1210525
Typically, people just run the load from the battery while it's charging.
>>
>>1210533
This. Cars do that all the time. Have the controller directly wired to your battery and it won't power off

Alright, so my understanding of earth potential rise might be a little off, but as far as I can tell, if you drove a lead into the ground near an electrical ground point, and another a suitable distance away, you could induce a voltage between the leads. Does this sound about right?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1210414
Sounds about right. I can't say how much current you would get from the exercise.
>>
Yes. that's why you don't want to stand with your feet wide apart when a power line is down. How far would depend on the voltage, moisture content, and luck.
>>
>>1210414
That's about right, its why when you run ground rods you have to connect them via a big copper cable.
>>1210427
And this, Powerlines or standing near antenna towers in a lightning storm is a no-no. The potential difference between your two feet on electrified ground can be a few hundred to a few thousand volts depending on soil conductivity. Current can flow up one leg and down the other which can kill you on the spot.

I want to increase the strength and R value of a concrete block wall. It would increase the strength of the wall if I put in steel wire or rebar down through the slots in the concrete and poured more concrete from top down, but what if I just poured the dust down there and let time and ambient humidity harden the concrete over time? Or, going back to liquid concrete, what if I added a porous material like foam pebbles(the super tiny ones like 1/16th of an inch) to the mixture?

I know I can insulate the interior or add things to the exterior, but I'm talking only on the topic of the brick itself.

>>1210210
Fill the center of the bricks with packing peanuts? Dunno, best way would be to use vacuum sealed panels on the inside of the brick. You need airspace to create insulation, filling it with concrete will just create more points for heat/cold to get into the house.
>>
If you actually want to increase the strength because of some real not imaginary reason, you'll have to have starter bars coming out of the foundation/slab that it's resting on, otherwise you have a wall that can just topple over from the base. And while you could theoretically dry pour and let it (eventually) harden by ambient humidity, you wouldn't have concrete grout, you'd have shit you wasted your money on that wouldn't protect the rebar from rust and wouldn't add any significant strength to the wall.

You'll need 16mm deformed bar for the starter bars from the foundation, 12mm deformed bar up the wall, (both at 400mm centres) and 12mm deformed bar laid horizontally every second course.

You'd be better off using lightweight insulating concrete forms instead of blocks, as that will give you some degree of insulation. If the wall is already up, line it with polystyrene panels or other insulation.

Hello there, new to this board. I am have a lot of experience with soldering and recently have wanted to get into brazing. Anyone have any suggestions for beginner brazing? A good beginner set up? Thanks!
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Brazing's a fairly difficult skill- try some soft soldering first, using flux and how to apply your heat so the solder moves to where that is, then work up to silver-soldering and the like
>>
>>1210105
Thanks anon, a lot of things i solder i like you use rosin core with flux in it. Does brazing have options like this? I read at certain temps with brazing your flux will change colors. I have done a few arc welds however it ruins the molecular compounds in the products i am making ruining the magnetic charge the metal needs to hold. I did some research and brazing seems like a better option for what i am doing. Is this something you recommend i try at home to experiment? The gas tanks required seem a little scary to be sitting in a garage. Thoughts?
>>
>>1210106
Try some sheet metal soft soldering- make a tool tray or something like that
>Clean up the edges, remove any zinc coating, flux the joins, apply heat and then run the solder along it.

That's sort of how I ended up learning to braze and solder, later on moved into a bit of copper and silver brazing in more industrial/plumbing applications. I'm not a professional though and we do have some plumbers lurking here which might be able to jump in.

So, I am currently planning a bookshelf for my living room. The shelfs have to be 120cm wide and about 35cm deep. The shelf is should be able to support a lineup up heavy encyclopedia style books stacked along its entire length without bending to a degree, where it is visually apparent. According to my calculations, 30mm thick plywood with 3mm walnut veneers on each side, will still bend more than 2cm in the long run. Which I assume is going to be visible under normal circumstances.

How should i go about doing this, without using solid hardwood, since I dont want to do that due to warping and expansion concerns. Especially, since the room, which the bookshelf is going to be in has a relative humidity of 70%@19° in the summer and like 45%@19° in the winter.

>>
Why are you storing books in a room with 70% humidity?

Also, use real units.
>>
>>1209981

Because thats the retarded climate combined with the fact, that this is a 200year old building with almost 50cm thick stone walls. Those walls never really heat up and so it cools the humid 35° outside air down to like 18°C, which is equivalent to the temperature that most modern basements sit at during the summer.

The metric system is the system of god dude.
>>
>>1209982

Yeah, I don't really care about that. How is it that you can spend enough time working on a bookcase to calculate the deflection of plywood under load but you won't buy a fucking dehumidifier?
