i recently bought one of the silicone plug molds (pic not mine but that's what it looks like) to make my own plugs at home and i'm trying to figure out the best material to make my plugs out of. i've heard resin is good but that clay is also a decent material. i just want /diy/'s opinion before i buy something i regret.

Hello /diy/ first time on this board.

Now someone in my house and put this chip in my granite and to my surprise no one knows who did it.

What would be the best way to repair it without calling someone in?

Thanks

Clear epoxy should work and be fairly discreet.

look around see if you can find the chip. repairs usually look better the less filler you use

I can't find any I think it was done a few days ago

I've developed an interest in woodworking and I've decided to give it a try.

What would be the basic tools I need and an easy beginner project? (Something like a spoon maybe?). I'm 18 and I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with my parents so there isn't a garage or shed.

First, you need to plant a tree.
>>
You must first decide what you want to do.

Make furniture?
Carve sculptures?
Turn bowls?

Woodworking is kind of a large area.

You mention a spoon, which is carving wood generally. For this you need some knives and gouges. The nice thing here is that you can fit all the tools in shoe box and there is no loud noises.

However if you want to do larger pieces, you generally need (or rather want) power tools, which are large and loud.
>>
>>1094975
With that small of space, woodburning and woodcarving (like carving a spoon) would be your best bet. Maybe balsa wood projects like model building.
It really doesnt translate well into real woodworking later down the line when you get a garage though.

To be honest, the typical furniture building and other big woodworking you tend to think of is loud and messy which isnt suitable for doing in an apartment.

Some time ago, there was a TED video where a guy who wanted to save crows came up with an idea. Basically, he wanted to develop an automated small dispenser and collection station that would train crows to bring "shiny objects" to the dispenser and deposit them there in exchange for a food reward. Peanuts in this case. These stations would be controlled by a small laptop powered by a 12 volt battery and solar panel so they could be placed anywhere. The potential is obvious. Most crow populations live within close range of humans and they have adapted to live in urban centers very well.

There are two major reasons I would like to invest time and money into this. The returns could be significant. First, over $200 million a year in lost change. Yes, that's right...Americans lose that much per year in coinage. Trained crows could pickup much of that with their penchant for shiny objects. Also, crows that live in areas near gold bearing lands also could be trained to select for gold shiny objects and bring nuggets to the collection box. Of course, lost jewelry could be counted in their targets as well.

The amazing thing is that crows train their fellows and pass these skills on to the successive generations. Think of having a trained workforce numbering in the thousands out picking up shiny things for you for the next 10, 20, 30 years....

Go watch the TED video and if you are serious and interested in working on this project lets get together and do this. Even though he shows a working dispenser in the video, I don't think anything really ever came of this. It's a ground floor opportunity.

I've thought about this. You could make an algorithm that determines the relative value of objects and distributes reward accordingly. That way the crows selectively learn to pick up more and more valuable objects. Could also lead to crows stealing your shit around your house obnoxiously.
>>
>>1094742
I would train for coins, jewelry and gold. Pretty easy for them to focus on these and not become household pests. I think a lot of people have thought of it. It's the actual doing it that is the key..lol. It will take time and money to develop, although I think that the TED video guy did try to market a base kit but I don't think it really got off the ground.

/diy/ I'm a 19 y/o student who works at a small town hardware store. I've been there a little over a year. I don't like drinking and it's about to get piss cold and dark very early. Can anyone recommend any projects? As of now my skillset is limited and I am looking to expand. I plan on lurking /ohm/, however I am a fan of woodworking, I just don't know where to even begin. I just found this board, be gentle.

Oh also can anyone reccomend a decent multitool? I have had a Leatherman Wingman. It wasn't the greatest but I liked it until I lost it. My current EDC is a Buck Vantage (we sell them) however I often find myself having to search for tools that i could otherwise have in a pocket tool (pliers, wirecutters, knife, screwdrivers)

Building a new work desk, and I want to know how tall I should make it. As a tall guy (6'5"), I find most desks are a little low especially when I am doing intricate work like soldering and half to bend down

Are there any rules of thumb when making a custom desk/work bench about how tall it should be? Should I measure myself when sitting from the floor to somewhere on my chest? Or just build it and feel it out

pic somewhat related, I'm still haven't decided on any details tho

This dark at 430 shit is killing me.

Since I can't do anything outside since its dark and cold as fuck, can you recommend something to me?

I'm handy and decent with most trades.

BTW I'm Merican but live in Germany so I can't just drive to Walmart or home depot to buy parts and shit.

Ideally I'd like to sell whatever I make or produce.

Hi all. I have this HR2810 that has now recently been giving issues.

It has very low power and the armature and stator get extremely hot very quickly.

Is there any way to diagnose if either the armature, the stator or both are the cause of the problem? It has on new brushes and the communicator is clean.

While it as older beat up tool, the price of an armature is less then 10% than buying a new machine.

I have some experience diagnosing electrical issues on motorbikes but that is a lot easier with a running engine with easy to access connections.

I have the same one. Have had to have it rebuilt twice in three years. Using it about once a month for 30 minutes to go through a foundation wall. The thing works good but had a major weakness in he design
>>
>>1094756

We have used this one a lot over the course of 3 years. Often daily use by heavy handed labourers.

Quite happy with the amount of work it's done. Want it to do some more without having to send it to a shop.
>>
Low power and getting hot? Is it getting hot where the motor is?

This caught my eye and I'd love for it to be bluetooth and I don't need to LED display. Anyone know where to start reading/get started?

I'd recommend using an Arduino and a breadboard to make a prototype first. Get yourself aquainted with the parts and the circuitry.
Once you get that working, you can always turn it into a single piece circuit board. It will require at least some electronics and programming experience though. Maybe start off with a few simple circuits and work your way up from there?
>>
>>1094348
Separate the project into functional units.
Figure out what you need for each unit.
Figure out how to put them all together.

So you have this heartbeat counter from a project. You want to add bluetooth which means both a sender and a receiver.

Getting data from the monitor over to your bluetooth unit should be trivial.

You'll need a bluetooth module for the sender, some coding for controlling it.

Something will need to receive it too. I'll assume whatever app on a mobile which I'm not familiar with.

So now you need to figure out the protocol to connect the data flow. Maybe there's some standardized one for heartrate monitors, dunno.

At this point you should have it all.
>>
I used that project as a basis for a more complicated wrist mounted heart rate sensor.

How low level do you want to go?

Do you wish to copy that project exactly and just add bluetooth to it? Or are there modifications desired?

It's very well documented. Just collect the components, breadboard it, and watch it go. Connecting a bluetooth module to the PIC16F they used is trivial and then you just need to setup your host device to display the data calculated by the PIC.

le me has some questions.
I put together parts for a pc i would like to build. The last time I built a PC was 2005ish and at that time we discussed about AGP 8x slots. So I am having a hard time with graphics card and CPU choice

What do I need the PC for? I will run it with linux most of the time.
o) everyday occurrence such as watch TV and vids
o) I will run intensive statistics calculation to test before sending it to the computation center
o) I plan to to some video editing & transcoding
o) I will run it on windows for some games (racing games, GTA, x-plane simulator and Farming Simulator 17 (that's a thing in my country)
o) I will need to attach a conventional PCI card (yes, I got them, need them, when I grew up ISA slots were unbeatable)

This is what I picked: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yzpnyf

So basically I have four questions:
1. For the graphic cards I have two options: GeForce GTX 1080 or 1070. I read a lot, I still don't get it, both have the same 8 GB VRAM. I have no intentions in VR or 4k at the moment. Vendor claims "new" GDDR5X would increase memory clock, so what? Is it worth going for the 1080? seems a lot of money.

2. 6700K vs. 6700, worth?
I would pay manageable 30 bucks more for the 6700K, but I do not plan to overclock and I realised that the "maximum Turbo Boost" clock speed is about the same for both, while the advertised clock speed are 4.0 and 3.4, respectively. So which clock speed matters doing calculations? Will this be a advantage?

3. My mainboard will have 2 external USB 3 ports and some mainboards would offer like 4 or 6 such USB ports. But do I assume correct that these would share the same bandwidth so it's basically the same as a USB hub? I thought in most cases there are only two USB 3 controllers and therefore 2x all the full USB 3 speed, right? Back in my days, I was happy having a different USB controller for internal and external (USB 2.0 of course)

4. Will all play together?
imho yes

all input on this welcome, thx
