What are your thoughts on 'restoring' old tools?

Im in two minds about it myself:

1. Because I like the way old, used tools look. Theres something about the paint chips and rust that just appeal to me. It just screams history.

2. Because of the satisfaction you get from turning something old and rough looking up into something that looks new.

I'm of the opinion that quality, design solutions and materials used is what makes an old tools fascinating - whereas chipped paint and rust signals poor maintenance and screams for a new, more caring owner and user.

I wouldn't say I'm terribly good, but I enjoy dabbling in restoring items to their former glory to the best of my ability.

>chipped paint and rust signals poor maintenance and screams for a new, more caring owner and user

its also an opportunity to ask for a lower price

i usually strip the rust & paint off and put on a clear coat

I get what your saying. But tools that were passed down from a grandfather etc are bound to have signs of heavy use.

I think old tools that were passed down look way better than new stuff you can buy at home depot.

is there such a thing as a cheap flexible display that can be programmed to act as a dolls face? im thinking of making this with a mic to act as an interactive thing but i don't know how expensive it would be.

i was thinking just LEDs like these as well if the intensity can be adjusted at the expense of different colors.

Sup, /diy/. So I had this souvenir dagger I got a while ago and I got to thinking, "Rather than shove it in a box with all my other souvenirs, I wonder if I could make something to display it." Thing is, I've never made anything before and don't really have any idea what's possible or what tools I need to do it.

So I made a mockup of what I was thinking, but it's a little inelegant. I went to the hardware store and picked up a thin brass rod and bent it with some pliers, snipped off a little bit to make some clips to hold the back together, and used screws in a block of wood to keep it in place because it kept falling backwards.

Problem is, I only have ~five inches of shelf space to display it and as it is, it takes about eight. I was thinking I could bend the brass so the stand is taller vertically and the angle the dagger hangs at is closer to 90, and I'd like to ditch the wood block, but the problem is that the dagger is too heavy in the rear and it falls over. I thought I could use a thicker brass rod for the bottom part of the frame but I don't have any welding tools or knowledge of how to connect the part holding the dagger with the base. Anyone have any ideas on how I could improve on this?

I have 2 good ideas:
1 build the same brass stand but at the top put a arm out with the hook on the end so the dagger/letter opener hangs vertically.
2 make a fake stone to put it in sword in the stone style.

Get a block of wood and stab it really hard. Bam! Dagger on display.

I like this

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/237916976/dreamscreen-smart-led-backlighting-for-any-hdmi-tv

This guys asking for $75.
How would you /diy/ this as cheap as possible?

My first idea: strip of addressable rgb LEDs, RaspberyPi, HDMI splitter, HDMI input board for Pi, small program to drive LEDs

Thoughts? Your input?

you can do this with an arduino nano too, total cost should be like 30 bucks or less

Uhh how is arduino nano supposed to interpret hdmi signal?

I have two 8x13 in. handled wooden cutting boards my friend brought home from Olive Garden. I'm looking for ideas on what to turn them into! Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking some art for my dorm or a grid pattern to set up crystals and other metaphysical things on.

Are they like in the photo or are they "end grain" cutting boards. If they are end grain cutting boards, don't deface or harm them, those are amazing and last forever with proper care and normal use.

For the type in the image, look up "Lichtenberg figure wood burning" using electricity to burn the pattern into the wood. If you make one from an old microwave transformer, make sure to do testing on scrap wood to get the feel for what you can do with them. It is great for wood that doesn't have very good figuring on its own.

You can make a cutting board.

How do you store all your tools, junk, random bits of wire, things that you have no immediate use for but are too good to throw away, etc?

I bought a shitload of acro bins on amazon/msc and a benchtop rack for them.

Definitely better than not having them. I'm trying to figure out how to store my shit better too.
>>
In old cans that eventually get so full of shit I can never be bothered to spend hours combing through them.

Might as well just dump them in the trash.
>>
>>1229251
I have a big acro bin for:

hammers,
pens/pencils/paint-pens/paper,
snippers/clippers/nippers/scissors,
screwdrivers,
and some other shit I can't name at the moment

this benchtop thing + the size bins you want

Please excuse the crude MS paint prints, I can't seem to figure this one out, I patched all the holes in the duct work with insulation and HVAC tape. The air flow improved dramatically in the two vents, but most of the vents only saw a marginal, if any, improvement.
Is it possible there's an obstruction inside the ductwork?

>>
>>1229212
sometimes there is a section with a butterfly type valve to control air flow.

on my dads house the vents came up through the floor, and had poor fit to the ductwork, so I ended up sealing areas I couldn't reach with expanding foam. that, plus wrapping vents with insulation, made a big difference
>>
>>1229212
air is like water and will take the easiest path. this means the vents with the least restrictions will flow the best. most residential jobs nobody ever puts in balancing dampers. having these dampers you can move the air around. also remember that CFM design is based on room size also. generally it's .75 to 1.5 CFM per square foot. a 10x10 room would see around 100 CFM and this doesn't feel like a lot of air if you put your hand over the vent. larger rooms will have the CFM spread across multiple vents. if there are single vents in the larger rooms then these will feel like they are flowing more air.
>>
>>1229218
>sometimes there is a section with a butterfly type valve to control air flow.
I didn't see one, but I'l look again

There was one duct that was totally disconnected from from the air handler (The master bedroom) that I bullshit back into place, I did a pretty good job considering what I had available to me, but I'm going to get some expanding foam and finish that off.

The biggest difficulty with this is that everything is in a crawl space, it is the biggest pain in the dick to try and ninja my way around everything while keeping the body profile of a cat in heat.

I removed the badge from my grill and there is a hole where the badge was. I could go online for a new grille but I like my plastic stock grill, I just want the hole covered. Is there any way I can somehow make plastic, mold and sculpture it , and then paint or vinyl it?

OTHERWISE, are there other ways to do this? Like how do you fill in a hole on a car grille or anywhere on your car to be able to shape it with the rest of the bodywork to make it look seamless?

>>
Cheap nigger way;
Sawdust and thin strips of newspaper soaked in a mixture of water and wood glue, then pressed in the hole.
Sand smooth, skim with wood filler, and paint.
>>
>>1229199
Isn't there like a product i can buy at walmart or slmething like glue or putty thst i can shape and fill in the gap?
I will still consider your advice

Look up super glue and baking soda, people do that on helicopters and stuff. It dries rock hard and it's super cheap

Hey /diy/.

So I bought these old record cases. They were cheap, but they look kinda manky. I was thinking to spruce them up a bit, I could paint them.

Would that work? If so, what paint would you recommend? Surface is a kinda faux-leather plastic.

I've always been into gaming and video games even sense i was a little kid. I currently have a mac from christmas that my parents got for me s i kept it not just for the "not a horrible son part" but also thinking that i can play lots of decent games. NOPE. Long story short i want to build a pc does anyone have any tips or tricks they can help me with?

pc parts picker.

building a computer is pretty easy, just look at a youtube video
>>
Whats your budget? What games do you play?

Building a pc has become just like legos today so it's not really difficult. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube that hold your hand throughout the build. But in my experience I would stay away from full ATX sized towers because they become a pain to move.

I just moved into a tiny one room apartment. I sleep right next to a mini fridge and the noice drives me nuts. I'm connected to a storage cubby that I figure I can put the compressor in and keep the fridge where it's at. Is this possible/practical? Thank you. Pic not related.
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1229056
No. Not unless you have all the parts available cheaply.

You'd have to break the lines, run the extensions, insulate them and refill with refrigerant. Plus you would lose efficiency I bet.

Be easier to put the whole fridge in a vented box. Or a get a new one. You can try and dampen the compressor noise by insulating it or tightening the bolts but I bet it won't solve it. Usually the noise is from worn internal parts.

Just my opinion. I'm probably gonna get memed for this post.

I need some input on tin to copper ratios

I am in the process of making a home foundry to begin casting metal, but aluminum is boring, and tin/copper are too shiny.

I know that bronze is an alloy of tin and copper typically, sometimes with lead/zinc added in, but I am not planning to hammer it at all, just cast it

What ratio of tin to copper produces the best colours, 5% 10% or 25%?

Luckily, I went overboard on power? I made my forge based on some youtuber's simple design that I modified to ve sturdier and more efficient. Like, replacing the hair dryer with a shop vac for airflow.

Needless to say I accidentally melted steel and had to make some air flow controls out of pvc

Ok so, I'm getting an apartment and I want to give it a kind of cyberpunk/industrial feel. I want a concrete or similar floor but obviously the only places with that are squatting in an old warehouse (which I'm not against doing) or buying a 3k a month unfinished loft. How can I either a. Make a concrete/cyberpunk floor using interlocking tiles for cheap or b. Find a cheap warehouse space to live out of?
