Already given a swing just like this made from cedar 4 coats of shellac. Do I need to do anything else or is it good to go?
>>1102411
>shellac
>not polyurethane
>>1102430
Ditto. Shellac is not a good choice for outdoor wood furniture. (Sorry, I know it's too late.)

it might not swing i would lift it higher off the ground
I have a fishtank that I have been setting up in a false fireplace in my living room. Ive come to the point where I need a way to bring water down to the sump in the basement in the case of a power outage.
There isn't much space behind the tank to set up a hang on back siphon system and I have the tubes running up and down to the basement sump tank at the moment. My issue is that because I don't have the space to set up a hang on back siphon system.and cant level the water in the tank with the sump in the basement , how can I start a siphon again whenever the power would come back on after a power outage.
Is there a type of pump that will bring water down to the sump that I can set up down in the basement, or some kind of electrical siphon starter to get the water flowing again?
I would prefer not to have to drill the fish tank because it will void the warrenty and I don't want another section that might leak or cause a problem in the long run which would be difficult for me to get to when the tank is filled with water.
I tried asking this question on an aquarium forum but it seems that they either don't understand the dilemma or are just going in a circular logic of saying well drill a hole, well if you cant drill a hole use a hang on back, well if you cant have a hang on back then drill a hole.
Anyway TLDR, how can I get a siphon started again with a power outage and I am not home or asleep, so that I don't come to a giant mess, or a pump that pulls water down.
>>1102284
I dont know anything about advanced aquarium pumps.
But have you considered using a UPS battery backup?
When the power goes out, it will automatically move to battery power and will continue to run your pumps uninterrupted.
Its like unplugging a laptop from the wall.
In the ~$100 range you can find ones built for high powered desktop computers.
The power draw from your pumps will be a fraction of what a gaming pc is, so it would run the pumps for a long time.
I have an ultra small form factor PC running a fileserver. I have it on a 825VA UPS backup.
The calculations say that at idle my mini pc and raid array would run up to something stupid like 27 days straight on just battery power.
You could easily find something that would give you days worth of power for cheap.
hello wise men, i need your opinion. so im gonna buy an industrial laser pointer and make it portable. i need laser module, 12v rechargeable battery, battery indicator and some adapters, im also gonna craft aluminium case for these components i was thinking this kind of setup, would it work? do i need some kind of transformer?
btw i wasnt sure where to post this so i posted this to /technology and /diy

Your questions indicate that you lack sufficient knowledge to handle a high powered laser safely. Stick to 1mW ones
Also don't expect chink shit lasers to get anywhere near their specs

You are going to blind yourself or someone else
Its not a joke, and even if you did somehow slap this thing together youll get bored of it in 20 minutes.
Hey /diy/,
I was hoping that someone here would have some sort of idea of how to manufacture pic related.
They're called "stravigors", though specifically they're called rolling rastrums. They're used to draw musical staff lines on any surface, and operate with ink. One side draws one big staff lines, and the other draws two. I want to make one of these for myself, as I have not been able to track one down anywhere. I thought perhaps 3D printing would be my best option, but I want to know if anyone here has any ideas. Thanks in advance.
I may be biased as im a metalworker but it looks simple enough that could make one out of brass yourself with a vise, a jewelers saw, some files and a hammer. What are the rollers usually made of?
>>1101993
I have no clue, to be honest. Looks like carbon steel? Perhaps copper even. But I'm interested in your method. I have a friend who is an excellent metalworker as well, care to share?
>>1101988
They work like a penstriper.
The center is hollow with a lid that you put liquid ink in ( like think fountain pen ink)
The edge that is need the rollers have either a small slot cut into them or a small hole drikker into them so that the knurled section of the roller can pick up ink.
In its most simple form it is a box, with tabs that are drilled to act like a bearing for a roller that hase some knurrled raised sections.
Okay i've got a really weird situation for you. This happened to my parents not me, so have a read.
>They have an outdoor covered well
>A 4 wheeler was parked next to the well for about a week and started leaking gasoline and who knows what else
>Mom tastes gas in the water and smells it in the shower
>They switch to store bought for the time being
>Someone suggests filling the well to the top, then putting in this special mat that truck drivers use for oil spills to absorb residue? It doesnt work.
>Genius decides to put degreaser (the kind you'd use to wash your hands in a shop) into the well in hopes it would loosen whatever's down there.
The well takes its water from the very bottom, but it continues to smell, and taste like gas. How can these fools clean all this shit out?
bout the only thing I could think of, chuck in a pump with a hydrocarbon water filter in line, take the water from that meantime, this shouldnt be that expensive or complicated to rig up. Otherwise? - wait till it rains a lot, which may not be a genial solution, but, its infinitely smarter than adding fucking degreaser to your water supply, IMO.
Throw a match in the well.
>>1101955
Anon... Was it your truck? Are you the fucker?
Oil spills
Another chronic problem in many rural homes is leaking or spilled fuel oil which eventually contaminates the owner's own well. Many homes have a fuel tank, either buried or above ground, adjacent to the house and within a few feet of the well. Spills or accumulated leakage eventually can migrate to the aquifer and can be drawn into the well, making it unusable for years. Usually the only solution is to obtain a new water source. In some instances, however, reducing the pumping rate to reduce drawdown allows the oil to float on the water surface safely above the well's intake area.
https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/gw_ruralhomeowner/gw_ruralhomeowner_new.html
You could probably work out a pretty expensive filter system to make it usable in the house again. Hopefully you don't have to replace all your plastic shit. Hydrocarbons impregnate some plastics and will leach out for years.
Getting quotes on another well might be worth it. Or the well guy might have some other... Solutions.

Not sure if here or /g/ would be better to post, but I figured you guys would know it faster.
I'm trying to build my own version of an expensive lamp, and I was wondering if any of you knew where I could get this part. It's an 8x16 matrix of tiny white LED's that vary in brightness. I haven't been able to find it anywhere.
Thanks!
>>1101903
maybe the neopixel product line from adafruit is what you need?
>>1101909
Thank you so much, anon! This is exactly the one I was looking for!

Maybe it's just me being used to the direct-from-China/bulk pricing, but all these "ready to go" modules I keep seeing seem so overpriced.
Can you guys give me some gift Ideas I can make on a cnc mill?
finger engine or similar mechanical toy.

Seconding this, mite b cool.
There's always that guy that built a full working miniature internal combustion engine, that shit was fucking neat.
Hi DIY
I just used a digital analyzer in my Embedded Systems class, and literally fell in love with it (pic related). Anyway, the price is not affordable for me.
What would you recommend as a cheap alternative, considering I would use it to analyze max 100MHz digital signals and to make some basic analog sensors readings (piezo sensors, ...)?
https://blackmesalabs.wordpress.com/2016/10/24/sump2-96-msps-logic-analyzer-for-22/ cheapest way of getting near 100MSPS, analog stuff might be easier on a different board
>>1101810
>Not getting the Analog discovery 2
ayy
My university had this deal going with Digilent where the discovery 2 was 75 dollars or something, plus free parts.
Shit is so cash, good luck in getting one.
>>1101810
you can buy any cheap chinese logic analyzer, (https://www.aliexpress.com/item//32328690865.html)
they're basically just an adc and fpga in a box; all the magic is in the software and luckily salea offers a free download of theirs https://www.saleae.com/downloads
if you don't want to buy a ripoff the DSLogic pro is also a good product and it comes with it's own software

me and my friend were fooling around on his iphone and we accidentally changed the password and locked out ourselves. are there any ways that i can unlock the phone so we dont have to get his moms help?
give it back tyrone

This is /do it yourself/, not /help jerome steal someones phone/
Where do you get them nowadays?
I want to make a chiptune player with an arduino. Can you still get them for a reasonable price? (<20$). Also what is the one with the most voices/what is maximum?
Do you really need the original and can't use emulation?
>>1101614
Of course I could, but Its a whole another feeling listening to a "real" one (I know it doesnt sound different). Also its a nice demo hearing one of one of these working
>>1101612
>Where do you get them nowadays?
Get a C64 from eBay/garage sale/Goodwill and pull it.
how?
>>1101302
take the sides off
Will I be able to do it on my own without dropping it?
Hey /diy/, moron here.
I'm doing a build and want to include pic related. For those unfamiliar, its a Mega Stomp Panic - a motion activated audio device with a variety of different sound-scapes.
However, I would like to make it louder because reasons.
>>1101285
>Cont'd
Now this thing has an internal speaker. I opened it up and pic related is what I found. Unfortunately, this device does not have an external audio jack.
>>1101285
Get an op-amp and maybe a larger speaker. done.
So should I solder a jack to the speaker's connection points and run that to an amp like this?
How do you make furniture that lasts? Specifically i want to make a desk since i cant find any that match what i want which is basically a narrow dining table almost, very simplistic but maximises desk space.
>>1101237
Make it out of materials from harbor freight, they sell some of the best tools for realistic prices (other stores often raise the prices dramatically and false advertise their uses). You can make the base of the desk out of pallets as they are built to last and will not break under pressure.
Solid oak. It'll cost you but if built right will last forever

Based shitpost
I've always been interested in woodworking, but I don't really know how to get into it. I want to be able to build my own furniture, and have hobby that's useful and fulfilling. Anyone here have any advice, or maybe could give me some book recommendations on how to get started? Maybe some links?
>>1101209
watch a lot of youtube videos, and make stuff yourself until you're good.
>I don't know which videos/books
any will do. If you've watched/read enough, you'll better understand which were shit and which weren't.
>what tools should I buy?
whichever you need. Buy cheap stuff until you have enough experience to see where you need quality and where you don't
>but what should I build?
Whatever you need. Alternatively, google "beginner woodworking projects"
Come back if you have specific questions to a project you already had some thoughts about and formulated a concrete plan.
Also, fyi, there's a stupid questions thread on /diy/ (if not, make one), where you can ask simple questions. I'm sure you'll be there a lot.
get ready to spend on tools, and spend on wood
Get:
1) Pencil
2) Straight edge
3) a) Rough and b) fine hand saw (e.g. fatmax or irwin) or flea market 2$ saws
Then go to the store and buy some 2x4s and 2x6s and build some outdoor furniture. You don't need many.
If you need plans or ideas this is where you search internets or go to the bookstore. Try some mortise and tenon joinery with screws and glue with aforementioned furniture.
IF you hate it up to here. Stop. You've probably invested maybe 15$ for the chisel set and another 30$ for the handsaws and whatever for the 2x's so give up now.
If you have power tools, fine but you're better off with hand tools for now anyway.
What's the best place to sell a car at? Put one on crag list, but I need to sell it quicker. Auto list a good place to put it on sell? Any advice diy
put a sign on it
make the cost ridiculously low
the description must say "I KNOW WHAT I GOT"
>>1100761
It's kinda low, just not super low. Sign won't help much since it's out of town limits and in a ranch, so I don't think a lot of people will see it.
>>1100763
short of spamming it online or spreading word to your friends' friends theres not much you can do
