hello /diy/pshits, anons, trips and etc.been busy, but these threads usually get a couple dozen decent posts before it turns into a bunch of people going "you're a useless cunt, no one cares, blah blah" same normal shit that is on a sri lankan shell trading website everyday.

feel free to ask whatever shit. lowesfags and menardfags are also welcome to make this a retailhardwaregeneralthread.

ps: your stupid customer service experience is probably half your fault but you're too ignorant of your own surroundings to understand this.
pps: we don't stock _x_ because one of the following reasons... a) 99 out of 100 people will never use it, so us, being a corporate retailer will not stock that kind of thing because we'd lose money. b) we could not get a contract with a good company nor will our in-house companies that we've bought over the years make an item at the moment without major retooling, which again is not profitable most likely. i guarantee you some bean counter somewhere did the math and there was a mostly useless meeting where a decision was made where number _____, which was how much money they'd make not selling what you want was higher than other number ____,, in which they sell what you want.
ppps: we work retail. if we were master electricians/plumbers/carpenters/etc we'd be out with those of you who are making the hundreds per hour a skilled technician commands. the sooner you understand that, the better your retail shopping experience will get at any of these places.

I homeschool my 13-year-old son and I asked him to pick out an elective subject he would like to start studying in January. He decided he wants to learn how to build electronics. I bought him a breadboard kit (pic related) I found on Amazon and I am looking for a good (free) online introductory course that he could work along with using it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not opposed to paying for a course once he's had a chance to get an idea of what it's going to be like. I've found several project videos on YouTube, but I'm hoping for something with a little structure to help him get to know the terms and functions of basic components.

Your kid is going to have a lot of social issues growing up much like every home school kid I ever met in college.

How about letting him try public school for a year instead of some stupid bullshit that will never get him laid
>>
When I need advice on socializing my kid, I'll be sure to let you know. Right now, I'm looking for help teaching him how to use his hands to create something.
>>
Teach him to replace the breakers in your circuit box. It's worth replacing them every so often, and as long as you supervise, it's totally safe for him to do.
First, see if you have any 15A breakers. Those used to be popular in the past, and some shady electricians still use them, but they're unsafe and could cause a fire. Replace them with sturdier, 30A breakers.
This is a good way to introduce load calculations- if you're in the USA, the house uses 120V power, and P=VA, so a 30A breaker can handle 30×120=3,600 watts, twice as much as a 15A one!

>I'm new to electronics, where do I get started?
There are several good books and YouTube channels that are commonly recommended for beginners and those wanting to learn more, many with advanced techniques. The best way to get involved in electronics is just to make stuff. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

so the arduino atmega has a device max output current of 200mA and a pin max off 50mA (or something like that)

you guys think i could pull 200mA through one pin for a few ns without causing any weird internal voltage drop effects? i'd like to turn on a fet without any driver circuitry besides a resistor and 50mA leaves it switching pretty slow.
>>
>>1102003
Pin output current isn't ' how much current is this pin capable of supplying' it's actually "how much current can I pull through this pin before the insides melt and parts of it stop working in strange and annoying ways"

You can pull current over the stated maximum and it will probably work but you will definitely cause long term problems that are difficult to diagnose
>>
>>1102007
consider though that the peak is only going to occur for 10ns at most. that's a pretty small i^2s that then has >1000ns to equalize before the next edge. my concern isn't with vaporization, since i'd imagine if the pin drivers were fully characterized and had a SOA in the datasheet i'd still be within it.

don't get me wrong, you could be right. i'm just more concerned with the possibility of voltage drops caused by the current spike resulting in some fucked up logic. i know fets reasonably well but i don't know much about digital ic topologies.

Also, I am using water based emulsion paint. Will this be waterproof? Will I be able to decoratively paint onto this surface using other water based paints?
>>
>>1110341
>water based

>no

not unless you seal it afterwards.
im not an expert but I'm sure you will have to seal it
to protect it.

where are you painting, why so dusty?
find a clean environment and try to make a tent or something.
maybe spray cans would give you a quick drying base coat before the dust can settle.
also its a much strong paint if you use acrylic sprays.

im not an expert but I hope that helps you a bit.

IoT. Why?

Nice lighting. Motion sensors? OK. But why does this have to be controlled remotely?

So after countless failed attempts I managed to build a neurophone (pic related) its working fine, I can´t really tell if it´s just ysing bone induction technology or 5d pyramid power to make the sounds inside my head and I really don´t care. My only issue so far is that the volume is kinda low, even if my mp3 is at max vol.

I was wondering if using smaller piezo disks (currently using 1"-2.3 cm) would work, or if applying more voltage (the schematic said 18v via 2x9v batteries) would do the trick, or better yet, if using smaller piezos as well as a higher voltage would work.

Thanks in advance.

Pic unrelated. As above, the surface of my computer desk has taken a good deal of wear. The fake food grain is coming off to show the cheaper wood underneath.

The desk is still stable and usable so is there any way I can fix the top to look better? Without covering it in tape :)

>>
>>1110043
Have you considered throwing it away and rebuilding your desk out of cardboard?
>>
Cheap route: buy a wood veneer and read up on how to diy it.
Expensive route: measure out the surface, go to home Depot or similar, buy a custom kitchen counter top in the style you like best. Glue it to existing table top.
>>
>>1110045
You can build anything out of card board and hot glue.

I decided to take the plunge and purchase a laser cutter. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

The local county office of education has one and I have been using it for about a year, but it is getting crowded so I can only get in around 8 hours a month on it. Pic related is the one I have been using.

It's a Universal Laser systems mode No. VLS4.60. 60w laser with a 24"x 18" bed and a 9" Z-axis. I like it, and I am thinking about purchasing the same one, but I would like to hear some opinions.

I've used a ULS before, but I bought a K40 chinesium one a while back.

The ULS is really nice if you have 10000 bucks laying around. To be honest, I'm pretty happy with my K40. It's closer to 35 W and I really needed work (swapped the control board, added a PWM to analog converter, which is impossible to find btw, added a radiator and pump), but if you have the background in electronics, It works really well for what you get and what you pay for.
>>
>>1110133
My budget is $9k. What's the hardest and thickest material you cut with a 35w?
>>
>>1110139
I really only cut .22 inch acrylic, and not much else, but If you have 9k, don't bother with a K40. A lasersaur might be a better option, albeit more work, and for 9K you could probably put together a 120W version, and blow everything else out of the water.

On a ULS 75W wth the HDPFO lens, I've managed to barely cut 1/32" plate steel in one pass, and up to 0.5" acrylic

The industry standard switches are those that came with your Bop-It.

McMaster Carr?
In essence a bop it could boil down to a stainless steel box with a mushroom push switch for the bop it button, a large head momentary open switch for the turn it (yellow if I remember correctly), and a pull switch for the pull it.

Hi, how can I reduce the output impedance of this audio interface without lowering the sound quality?
This is a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! Pro and it has 7ohms output impedance. It sounds great but on lower volume there is distortion with my HD662 Evos (32ohms).
The USB jack is missing but this is someone else's photo.
Thanks!

Or you can make some gay earphone holders by cuting sits in to some plastic but that's gay
