Fumes never used to bother me, but it gives me blinding migraines nowadays. I had to build a fume extractor, but I still feel like shit afterwards

Lead boils at 1750*C. It's not in solder fumes. ROHS is to protect the environment from the billions of electronic devices humans discard every year not electronics hobbyists.

Have you switched to lead-free solder recently? Different fumes.

Ok, so Harbor Freight has a shitload of cheap welders, and they aren't very good from what I've read here and elsewhere.

That said, if I wanted to learn how to weld (doesn't matter the type, TIG, MIG, Oxy-acetylene,) would it be worth my time going to the local community college and taking a course, or just buying a junk rig and having at it?

Pros? Cons? Advice from you DIY'ers who know? (Pic not related)
70 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>1101937
MIG is easy as shit if you can afford the rig. I wouldn't touch Oxy-Acetylene without a master welder showing me what to do. Oxy is a lot more difficult and a lot more fun. I've never done TIG welding.

Don't fucking cheap out on your eye protection if you go MIG though.
>>
depends what size materials you want to work with some of the high end budget brands like Hobart make some pretty cheap small MIGs. the Hobart Handler 130 $399 and you could likely find it on sale somewhere. then you'll need gas which you can get fairly cheap if you go the rental route but if you want to own the tank it will pretty much cost as much as the welder

taking a course is worth it IF they have fairly small classes and you actually get to spend time working with the teacher. most around me are basically useless and you pay $800 just to get the basic information the welder manufactures already give you for free on their sites
>>
>>1101937
You should learn stick before MIG if possible, it's significantly harder and MIG will be eady as fuck to pick up afterwards

TIG is a different beast and a lot Hardee than stick or MIG in my opinion, but it's fun as fuck and not that hard to learn with good instruction and plenty of practice

As for taking classes at the community college, it's definitely worthwhile if you'll get some one on one time with the instructor, if not then it's probably not worth the money. I'm taking classes at a community college now and they're fucking great, but I've heard lots of times welding classes suck ass

I need to keep a terrarium humid (80%). I have a fogger but I need to keep it automated because I work long hours. The best timer i can find that is programmable by the minute only has three cycles per day but what I really need is something that will turn it on the fogger several times an hour all day. All the countdown timers that I can find have a minimum 1 hour cycle. If anyone could point me in the right direction or give me some ideas for alternative methods of keeping up humidity it would be greatly appreciated.

Plants do it

An open bowl of water

Open in the morning and spray everything with a mist bottle.
>>
>>1095876
Or plug a timer into a timer, thereby cutting your on time down to half an hour.
>>
Arduino with timer module and humidity sensor controlling a high voltage relay that you can plug your fogger into. A cheap arduino clone will do the trick. Entire kit will be about $10 off ebay.

You can also get a humidity sensor/relay combined on a board, it will be less work but not as customizable and possible less acurate.

You can also hook the lights to the arduino with timer function and heating if you have that.

I bought their blower and it's 10/10. Two speeds, more powerful and less expensive than ones at the big box stores. I used it for mulching once and it worked fine, idk how long the plastic fan would hold up to chopping stuff up in the long run. But as a blower it's been my best purchase so far

Hi I got this fan that's blaring loud and would like to replace it. However I see all these fans the same size and voltage. but the amps are different. How important is that? The one I'm looking for is the xfan rdm4010b with 12v and 0.07A. But I only see ones with .06A as the closest one. Would this burn down my business?

I got one the same size and voltage but different amps at 0.10A. Can I splice the wires to the existing connector of the 0.07A without soldering?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
If you choose a fan with lower Amp rating it'll be fine. That's how much current the fan draws so if it's drawing less than the old one it there's no problem. Putting in one that takes more will probably cause issues.

I just want to make large plastic parts that don't look like shit but without having to pay a billion dollars
What can I do? Is it possible?

pic kinda related. It's a shell of a Macintosh Plus.
Its material volume isn't particularly large and the shape isn't overly complex, but

I am not completely sure what are you trying to make. Some plastic enclosures that look like old Mac?
Look into vacuum forming (or thermoforming I think that is correct term). there are some DIY videos on youtube.
Also you can check local engineering oriented schools and maker spaces. Maybe they can help you.
I think you could make form with 3d printing or from cnc milled wood ,... depends on a shape. simple shapes you can make with jigsaw and dremel.
>>
>>1112457
This sounds great, is there a name for the whole Googling acetone solvent welding now.

>>1112469
Anything really. I have modeled and printed numerous 3D objects from plastic but they're always small and, to an extent, brittle.
A computer case was just an example, a chassis for a keyboard could be another project.

Hello, /diy/

I have a Z97 G.1 Sniper mobo, it has all this fancy audio crap on it like a "TI Burr Brown OPA2134" op-amp, extra shielding, isolation from main mobo, gold-plated back connectors, etc. The issue is, all that crap doesn't work, I have a Shure SRH440 and whenever I plug it into the amped port I can hear hissing, the un-amped port doesn't provide enough power for the headphones, the cable is 3 meters long and does pass by some potential sources of noise, but I'm pretty sure it's the computer since when I put the GPU under load I can hear the hissing amplify and change, what can I do to insulate the sound section of the board better? Would changing the op-amp produce better results?

link to the mobo: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4952#ov

I believe the problem here is that the GPU is directly on the exposed op-amp and the 2 gain switches

any ideas that don't involve buying an external DAC or sound card?

>inb4 go to /g/

/g/ is full of inbred retards that only care about smartphones and loonix and won't reply if I ask them questions about modding a mobo

A BJT opamp might have less downmixing of the RF shit from the GPU. But it doesn't need to be the opamp, the audio processor DAC could be fucking it up.

A PC is a lousy environment for audio hardware.
>>
>>1112420
the un-amped port that comes straight from the SoundCore3DSuckMyAss chip is absolutely quiet, and I can't hear anything at all under any load. Also it has this metallic shield thing on it, sadly it's not very loud.

>a PC is a lousy environment for audio hardware

I've heard that before.

>BJT opamp
Any suggestions?
>>
>>1112426
Get an external DAC if it really bothers you that much.

2 questions about plumbing:
1: I'm putting in all new copper pipe to my fixtures; should I put in a water hammer anywhere since it would be relatively easy?
2: I have the origional Range Boiler, should I keep it and pipe it correctly to the water heater or not?

Background:
>be me, handy guy with mechanic/contractor father
>buy 104 y/o condemned house in MN 4 cheap
>code report says redo most everything
>noshit.jpg
>do everything else, pretty st8 ford
>get caught up on plumbing since I want to do it right the first time
I don't want to skimp out, I buy American if at all possible, I do layout to make sure I'm using the lest amount of fittings, etc.
Since I'm going to the trouble with all this, I want there to be no problems in the future (aka water hammer). Everything is exposed so it's not that hard to put one in by every valve and they're cheap enough. Like I said, I want to do this right so when I die the next guy goes "shit, this guy thought ahead".

Here is a pic of the range boiler (middle cylinder).
>note that it's probably piped wrong, from my understanding
Original gas conversion hot water boiler on left (only inlet pipe visible) conventional water heater on right.

Yes I am keeping th boiler for now, I don't have the time to put a new one/forced air in.
>>
Use pex onstead of copper. No point wasting money on copper, when pex is cheaper, easier to install, and has just as much longevity.

You meant a water arrestor, which stops water hammers, which is the banging sound caused by high pressure.

Just put a pressure reducing valve on the main water line. You can do it at the meter outside or wherever the line comes up under the house. That removes water hammers on the whole house.

Does the range boiler work? I'd rather just put a new gas or electric heater if it's gonna need a lot of maintenance repairs.
>>
>>1112272
I'm not doing pex, I understand the economics of it but I'm just not going to use it for multiple other reasons, so just help me out with the copper.
I don't need a pressure reducer (the elevation I'm at the city says I'm good) nor do I want to because I'm the kind of guy who wants the possibility of having the max but then deciding which application I want it.
And yea, water arrester, I learned it as a water hammer from the old man.
And I dont know if the Range boiler works, the house was vacant 2 winters with water in it and I haven't fired the hot water boiler yet...

I was wondering what capacitance start capacitor I would need? As well as what capacitance run capacitor?

Also if possible could someone show me a circuit diagram of how to wire it.

Thank any help would be appreciated
