How would you go about waterproofing a small device with a charging port? I want to make a water-resistant (lets say it needs to survive submerging in a cup of tap water) electronic device, with at least one port to charge it (preferably micro USB, as it will contain digispark, but it can be pretty much anything). The water-resistance should be as reliable as possible, so no flaps. How did Sony made their Xperia Z line phones submersible while having no flaps on audio jack, an from Z5 not even on micro USB?

How would /diy/ suggest making an armored diving suit?
I don't have the patience or skill to actually make a suit with chain mail and I was thinking its unnecessarily heavy.

What about carbon fiber and epoxy plates? A little plate armor for the extremities, maybe lorica segmentata style for flexibility.

Would it be strong enough to handle bites?

Any suggestions?

What about a weave of metal wire epoxied and made into plates?

Would it be able to have the same effect as chain mail without being such a bitch to manufacture?

Bought a GPS. Its in kinda rough shape. Want to get it to be as good as possible before i go hiking this spring. Whats the easiest/best way to buff scratches out with common household things? I figure some of the scratches are too deep to fully fix, but id like to get it as good as possible. Then i'll put a screen protector on it, which'll hopefully mask the deeper ones.

heard only about some gradient paste with microgranules but i never test it in battle.
>>
>>1114621

Just off the top of my head, that plastic restoration stuff wouldn't be a bad idea. It's essentially just a clear coat over the plastic. Try a little on an old model or the corner of this screen. Should work fairly well.

>>1114621
most of those scratches look pretty deep - i'd just use as is

Any machinists, pro or hobby, hang out around these parts?

My work (not a machine shop, we just have a cool metal shop to make in house repairs and fixtures) has this bad ass Bridgeport from the 40s I would guess. Been eye fucking it since I've been hired, and finally got basic enough training on it that they'll let me use it.

Big question with it is, can I use this to make a mini lathe and mini mill for the home? Got a copy of the Junkyard Metal Shop series by Gingery, and was just going to base everything in those books. Seems simple enough to do it how he suggests, but I figure making the ways and all that on an actual mill will yield far better results. Would I be able to make a decent set up, or am I better off buying a used one?

You probably want access to a lathe.
>>
>>1113811
For which parts exactly? Reading over the lathe book, it seems I'd be able to source a few of the pulleys to get the lathe functioning enough to machine the rest of the ones I'd need. Is there something I'm missing?

The whole idea behind the series of books is that these machines build themselves in a way. You machine your own parts to upgrade the lathe to build the next parts you need.

So beginner to /diy/ here, what's the consensus for a newbie's first iron?

[ ] Cheap as shit
[ ] Best you can afford
[ ] Not more than X amount of currency
[x] Choose by features vs. price point

Pic related, its a $30 USD iron from Amazon i am eyeing.

For a 60 watt iron with temp control and stand, it doesn't seem awful. Thoughts?

Hakko FX 888 D or the equivalent priced Weller. Learning on a good iron will make your life significantly easier.

>>1113474
One more vote for a good iron. My favourite for now is a Weller WP80, But it is likely way above your budget. However, It looks like you can have a Weller WES51 for less than $100, which should be sufficient for a beginner. The pencil shape can be quite convenient, and tips are easy to find and reasonably cheap in time if you are a bit careful with them.

Thieves keep stealing our portable welder and air compressor on our property.
Is there such a thing as a tracking device that I could attach to my equipment?
I need a practical way of catching who is doing this.

Have you ever tried shooting them?
>>
>>1113241
I have a gun and really want to shoot them, but they come at night. I need to find out who is doing it so that i can shoot them.
>>
>>1113238
The cheaper diy solution is to get an old smartphone with the cheapest service there is, install a tracking app that sends where the phone is every 5 minutes to a server, hide the phone in the welder and wire the charger internally to the welder's incoming line. If the welder is plugged in when stolen then the phone should be fully charged and send out position updates for a couple days.

I have bed bugs and I want to save most of my possessions. Nothing seems to work in killing those fuckers except 91% rubbing alcohol, an industrial grade steam cleaner or physically crushing them. The exterminator didn't do shit. What was thinking of doing is vacuum packing as many of my possessions as possible with dry ice. This way the vacuum will hopefully crush/pop them and remove most of the oxygen. As the dry ice melts, it'll displace even more oxygen, hopefully suffocating the fuckers. Then I'll keep it all sealed until summer and place it in the Arizona sun for a few weeks. Our summer heat + sun should finish them off. Meanwhile, I'd be steam cleaning every tiny nook and cranny in the house like a Nazi.

Has any one got a better idea besides burning the house down along with everything in it?? Like maybe some other way I could seal my possessions or something else I can seal in whith it? Cause at this point I'm running out of options.

I tried DE (diatomaceous earth) along with a very powerful shop vac (pulls the carpet off the nails lol) but it only seems to reduce the numbers, rather than eliminating them.

I called an exterminator and that was a waste of time and money and was just a huge inconvenience.

>As the dry ice melts, it'll displace even more oxygen,

Dry ice doesn't melt, it sublimates. Turning from solid to gas. It expands and your vacuum sealed bag explodes.

To demonstrate take a plastic soda bottle and fill with about 1/3 water. Drop some dry ice in there and cap it. Give it a shake and toss it far from yourself. Enjoy your crude bomb.

Add a bleed off valve instead . Also dont do it inside. Later use bed btg traps to keep an eye on if youve killed the infestation .

Hello.

I am looking to design pic related. I would like to make a larger size version of it, say 5 feet tall.

A few questions:
-Is there scalable design available of these illusions
-What material is best to make this from? Item will be outdoor, so it needs to withstand strong gusts of wind.
-Are there more of these designs out there, or a known method to make different animals?

How do you mean scalable? Can't you just increase the size of the print?

I'd make it out of marine plywood, seal the exposed edges with woodfiller and paint the whole thing with exterior varnish.

The actual graphics I don't know, you can of course get something printed on a fabric or thin plastic meant for professional outside signage. Might get away with printing it on paper and sealing it with varnish.

>How do you mean scalable? Can't you just increase the size of the print?
Scalable like vector graphics are scalable.

These printable models are tiny 4" models. It would require a lot of work to scale it up by hand.
>>
>>1117502
why marine plywood?

btw, gotta keep the supplies cheap. I was thinking making it out of foam board, and layering it with resin. Has to be mobile, and lightweight too. but strong enough for kids to fuck with, and not break.

I would like to build a custom wireframe bookshelf for my car's trunk for school. I need ideas, though...
