is it okay to ask an arbor to leave a chunk of a trunk when they remove a tree? I'm talking a 2.5 foot clean cut of the widest part as a chair/seat. Its probably a 3 foot trunk

Why not ask them to leave the whole thing?
They're just going to turn it into mulch anyways. Save them the work and get yourself more wood.
>>
why would i pay someone to remove a tree and leave it? my neighbor wants the chunk not me.

Hi DIY, I have 4 feet of vines, and I would like to know by what means I could ferment my grapes in order to make wine. (This is the first year for my vines, so the grape is not yet mature enough) thank you for your answers!

Hi anon. Italian fag here, wine producer: you must wait the end of September before you cut the grapes...anyway as far as I see you'll have maximum 30ml of wine from there..

Sup /diy/

I just paid cash for a little piece of mountain land, with the intention of building a small (600-1000ft2) cabin to use as my summer residence once I hit my FI goals.

I've been reading a lot about these kit cabins and they seem like a pretty cost effective way of putting a cabin up if you buy a quality design from a reputable company. Opinions on these? Any suggestions for manufacturers or advice you can provide?

Is a kit even the best way to go about building something nice on this land while keeping my costs down? I'm not looking for meme tier trash dwellings, I want to build something well that's super comfy and will last for a long, long time but as cost effectively as possible.

There's grid power just a few lots down the road, and I can have hookups installed right on the property by the power company pretty reasonably. The water table is pretty shallow and it will only cost a few thousand to have a good well put in. So, I'm in good shape on the fundamentals.

The big one is actually building the cabin. I'm pretty handy in general, but all my DIY experience is with electronics, machines, and plumbing from pet projects and working as an oilfield mechanic / roustabout. I know my way around all your common woodworking tools and I've hung some sheet rock and shit, but I have no real construction experience.

Any advice would be appreciated. Pic related.

Also,

Cabin building general I suppose.

I was smoking a rack of ribs and accidentally sprayed degreaser on it instead of the Apple cider vinegar on it like a fucking dumb asshole. I immediately realized what I did and drenched it in apple cider vinegar until it was dripping wet. it still has an hour of cooking before I wrap it in foil and let it cool for a few more hours.

is it safe to eat? am I fucked? will I die?

Dude throw that shit away, and next time pay attention. Maybe keep the degreaser away from the grill.

What's the degreaser made out of? I'd probably just throw it away though.

Me and a few other anons have come up with a "fantastic" idea. Net zero still offer free dial-up internet. Using the covergae finder on their site, we discovered what numbers we could call. We just purchased a 3.5mm to RJ10 adapter, as well as a RJ10 to USB adapter. Our plan is to use the NetZero client and start the phone call at the same time with the cell phone hooked up to the auxillary cord, to the 3.5mm adapter, then from there we have the modem connected to the RJ10 adapter, the audio from the phone gets routed to the PC, allowing the computer to communicate with NetZero, giving us slow ass dial up internet access ove the cellular network. sounds sketchy
you don't have a phone with a 3.5mm jack? bluetooth even?
>>
>>1232023
I have a 3.5mm jack, but the jack cant hook up to the RJ10 to USB connector. The reason I'm using the RJ10 to USB adapter is so the computer will recognize it as a dial up modem. I'll make a graphic and post it in a sec

Been looking into getting a table saw. Which brand is best? DeWalt seems to put out some great saws, and Ridgid tools are fantastic as well but I saw one at a local HD and didn't really like the countertop, seems like it was made of plastic? Been watching this channel on YouTube and the guy uses an old Porter Cable one. I have also seen a nice Delta saw for pickup on CL. With so many options, which one should I pick? Help me out, DIY :( also, my budget is less than 1k so maybe 600? I don't really need a $2k cabinet saw or anything super grand, I just need something stable, preferably with a cast iron table top.

Heard complaints about the fence on some of the DeWalt saws. Buying a different miter gauge also seems to help according to what I've read.

use on craigslist

they may look terrible, covered in rust...but plenty of them can be found sub $100 and are solid

>>1231599
As far as brands go, any suggestions? I've asked a couple of people I know that have circular and miter saws but none own a table saw so they didn't offer much help

supposedly the good ones have lots of tools that you probably don't have at home, and I suppose there might actually be some people there who don't suck and can help you learn.

Personally I'd expect it to suck 90% of the time.

This is the entire point of them. I don't understand this phenomenon of them supposing to be community spaces; even hobby shops back in the day, you might do some painting or assembly there but it wasn't specifically to meet people and join startups like hackerspaces are

Why do the 72'' ones work better for knives than the 30"? This is a real question
>>

I salvaged an old table saw motor in planning on using for one. Local steel distributor is 40 min away though, so I've been waiting for a reason to make a run up there.

I found a variac in a junk shop that works.

As far as the design goes, take a look on YouTube. Loads of guys building them. You can either buy the wheels for ~100USD or turn them yourself in a grinder or drill press. Prob worth the money to just buy them
>>
>>1230026
longer belt = longer life.

despite being twice as long, they actually last a lot more than double the lifespan.

72" / 186cm blets also have the advantage of being able to run larger contact wheel ranges - ie, 50mm radius wheels for fullers/scallops, and 250mm / 10" wheels for hollowgrinds.

they also allow a decent width between idler wheels, which lets you put a decent width/length platen in. more length there reduces the heat buildup from friction, which causes wear and premature belt failure. it also allows you to grind flat faces easier.

lastly, 2x72 is one of the widest range of belts, including cubitron II and Trizact.

While I was on vacation pidgeons made two nests on my balcony and laid some eggs. This weekend I have the time so I will go and clean everything. I was thinking about wearing a breathing mask and gloves. I'm looking for any tips regarding cleaning from people that have done this. Any tips appreciated.

>>1229662
simply throw their nests away and maybe leave some pidgeon poison. unless your balcony is in the middle of a clean, natural forest, these pidgeons carry disease, so you need to sanitize the problem accordingly.
>>
just pressure wash the fucker

maybe not even that, just use a hose

are you eating right off your balcony or something?? hot water and soap should suffice for getting any marks out

i had this problem too once i just used a broom and some water

you could make a home theater. the seats are usually the critical item, and you have that one covered.
>>
>>1229383
Great idea! But I was actually looking to spruce them up and sell them. Just don't know what the best approach is. I was thinking of maybe staining them and painting the seat part of it in different colours.

>>1229392
Sanding is going to be a pain in the ass, but stain, and paint is a good idea. I've personally wanted to get a good wooden chair to make a shelf out of.

I've used them for a hot water tank, and they seem to work pretty well. Especially good if the main valve into the house is leaking a bit, so you can't get the water totally shut off to make a clean solder (without resorting to the white bread trick)

I love them. Fuck sweating and cementing. Although, I had to replace all of them in my house after news broke they had lead in them that was above x limit. Now they are more expensive because of that....they still have lead in them though.

I want to start doing some pretty involved shit with my house's wiring. However, right now I have only basic knowledge like how to change outlets.

Does anyone have experience with electrician courses at community colleges or online? I am not looking to get to the point of being a full-fledged electrician but enough that I don't constantly feel like I'm about to burn my house down or kill myself.

Go to the local library, used books store, or thrift store and borrow/buy a book about DIY electrical. The basics have not changed in 60 years, so don't worry too much about its age. You can probably find the electrical code for your area online. Supplement the book with that. YouTube is also a great source of info on this kind of stuff.
>>
>>1228306
>involved
how involved

if you screw up and somehow cause an electrical fire, your insurance company won't cover squat
>>
>>1228317

Yeah luckily there are a shitload of libraries in my area that all are part of a sharing system. I've started researching some books and might have them do an inter-library loan on ones that my local branch doesn't have.

>>1228362

This house is old and thus has weird shit going on with it. Like the bathrooms don't have electrical outlets, for one. So I'm gonna add an outlet to each bathroom, put in GFCI outlets where code requires, and eventually replace all the 2-prong outlets with proper grounded 3-prong ones. The last bit is the one I'm most concerned about because it might require running new wire and terminating the old one. There's more but these are just some examples.

I plan on doing everything carefully, by the book (literally by the NEC book), following city code in terms of inspections and permits. I am overly cautious in general so I will not do anything with the potential to burn my house down without being extremely sure I'm doing it right. That's why I'm interested in going beyond Youtube videos and so forth to actually get a complete understanding of residential electrical systems.
