Hey /diy/kes,

Just got an internship at my uni and they throw out a shit-ton of barely contaminated 99% IPA (isopropyl alcohol). I say contaminated because they just use it to wash off some plastic machinery they have, no chemicals or biohazards.

I asked my boss if I can keep some, and he said okay.

What can I do with gallons of 99% IPA?
I was thinking of setting it up to my foundrey to use as fuel, in addition to charcoal and air.

Woah wtf I didnt even know they made 99%. . . highest test stuff ive seen is 93% and I heard you have to speak to someone behind the counter at a pharmacy to get 96%

The reason I cared to look into it is because of the Beer Can Stove, portable survival stove made out of a cut aluminum can (it can be googled or youtubed).

You need really high test rubbing alcohol to use it - they recommend 96%.

But 99% would be even better. So there you go, you can use it as free fuel for cooking.

Three or more of these beer can stoves and you can cook a whole dinner all at once and its probably not going to use much of it.

The trick is the flame has to be snuffed out to turn it off, not an issue but you might burn yourself if you didnt know.

(also dont knock it over or spill it, because you'll get an explosion, if you're not an autist this shouldnt be a prob though).

What are good screwdrivers to remove the case of an NES?

What I know is that it's definitely very tiny Phillips screws, looking like a cross. According to ifixit they're 13.25mm in size?
Is a PH1x80 screwdriver good, or should I go with a smaller one? How about a flathead?

Does anyone have experience with that?

This is completely fucking retarded. Why are you making a thread when you know the answer already?
>>
Yep, #1 or #0 Phillips is what you want. You want a standard screwdriver, not one with a bit holder that won't fit in the holes. With Phillips you'll usually be fine with one that's a size smaller than the screws, but you *should* always use the correct size.

So i'm installing this electrical box at work, basically it's going to serve as a direct access point to a projector because the wifi is wonky.

But none of that's relevant, the issue I'm having is with these damn holes. They should in theory be able to be popped right out. I've tried hammer and chisel, screwdriver, exacto blade, punching through with my fingers, nothing is working.

How do I get these damn things out?

either you're not hitting it hard enough
or
it wasn't formed right and the thin areas are too thick

try hitting it harder near the edge at the connection points or between them
>>
>>1123919
I'll try harder in a bit. I was striking it so hard with the chisel that the entire top would bend. Even holding it in a vice it would still give-in quite a bit. I imagine the fact that this is cheap hardware is having some play here.
>>
>>1123923
put LID on BOX
put CLOSED BOX in VICE
take SCREWDRIVER, put on one of three points where it is held, sharp tap with HAMMER.
repeat with other two points (if needed)

Trick is probably keeping the box closed/lid on, oitherwise, it just deforms/absorbs your mighty blows. ahem.

I have (A), an aluminum flashlight insert I bought to go into a maglite head (B)

I have ground the outside edge of (A) down enough that it's small enough to fit the largest ID of the head, the problem is that (A) won't fit into (B) without a ridge cut into it like on the original reflector (C)

without the proper metalworking equipment, I will have to improvise....a file might work but would take a really long time....a dremel might be the best I can rig up for the moment

maybe a piece of pvc could fit over the end to help keep it steady

>an aluminum flashlight insert I bought to go into a maglite head

take out the LEDs and mount the largest bolt (less than 3/8") you can with lock washers in part A. chuck in drill or better a drill press, use a sharp chisel to cut away the aluminum
>>
since I had the foresight years ago to buy a tap for the dremel threads, I'm going to make a dremel table so I can just spin the insert against a bit at the right height

>>1123705
if you mean to hack off the bottom and make a new post, that won't solve the issue of it being too wide
>>

I meant use the bolt as a mandrel and a drill as a makeshift lathe

The asbestos ducts i dealt with look like fiberglass if that helps. Just get a breathing mask and spray it with water if you dont want cancer and wont be doing this shit daily.

It does cause cancer but not without a lot of exposure.

Hey /diy/ im too stupid to do this but,
Im looking for ways to be able to convert a concert Euphonium to a marching one using lead pipes or pipes in general. I've seen them for tubas, but nothing else. The pic is a concert one and i was thinking of adding some tubing to the end of pipe for the mouthpiece to exyend to my mouth when in marching position.
Any thoughts? Thanks for replying.

This is how it would look like if it were in a marching position, it would rest on your left shoulder,
The pipe sticking out is where the extender would go

>>
>>1123346
Terrible idea.
If you just extend the piping it would throw off the tuning and you could never play in tune.

My buddy who repairs instruments had to rebuild a tuba from a marching to a regular one and he had to rework all the valves and lead pipe. You'd have to rebuild the thing

Okay, so, assume no prior knowledge, tell me how I can hack things, small to large scale, using a simple laptop or maybe even a phone. This shit interests me greatly

Also, anything I could do to protect myself from hackers, like people who can watch me through phone/laptop camera. Snowden showed us what the gov is doing - got me skits guys

Stop playing watch dogs.
Also, check out Kali Linux, I guess? It's known for being a penetration testing/hacking distro.
For the camera thing, electrical tape can fix it on a laptop... Maybe stay away from phones, or just remove the mic/speaker (yes you can use your speaker as a mic) and camera modules from the board

Are there any good non cordless drills?

I would of course like a DeWalt or comparable cordless drill, but they are pretty pricy for my use, and really I have never had a situation where I wasn't near a outlet.

I'm in a apartment and I'm mostly doing hobby electronics (drilling enclosures and that sorta thing) drilling holes in the wall (which is concrete or some stone like shit - great for blocking sound a pain in the ass to hang anything like I tried to drill in a coat hanger, got in probably 2-5cm and then it was real hard going. )

Not to mention I'm not keen on batteries wearing out (I got a cheapie back and Decker cordless a few years back and besides having zero power, drilling thin sheet - metal with the right metal bit took incredible effort - the batteries now last less than 5 minutes.)

So yeah am I shit out of luck for a decent quality non cordless drill?

The dewats I see on Amazon are around $200-$400 and replacement batteries are around $100 (all prices in CAD)

The corded drills I do see are from questionable brands and there isn't much selection.

Sparky here. I have to drill a lot of holes running wires, placing cans, hanging boxes, etc. I drill through all kinds of materials. Wood, concrete, metal, stucco, plaster & lath.

I've burnt up everything from Milwaukee, Makita, Hitachi, Dewalt, Bosch, and all the store brands Ryobi, Kobalt, ToolShop. I've settled on Porter Cable's hammer drill for general drilling. I can get about a year out of one before they catch fire and they go on sale for under 60 bucks regularly.

I still keep my Milwaukee triple gear reduction right angle drill in the truck for the intense work and an SDS for driving ground rods.

I'd recommend the PC for you. It's a good little hammer drill.

I forget, where is Stanley positioning Porter-Cable between DeWalt and Black & Decker these days?

Hey /diy/, I looked for a proper thread and didn't see one, and an internet search might be too broad. I started work at a lumber yard, pulling orders and delivery. I want to learn more about the materials, as well as the process of building. My boss recommended "getting some splinters in my hands", but I also want to study in my free time.
Are there any books or webpages you recommend that I could read for the fundamentals and work my way up? Thanks.

Study what you can find on basic carpentry and modern home construction.
Understanding the differences between lumber grades should help.
Make a list of the main types of products your lumber yard stocks and sells.
Organize this list in order of what material you deal with the most, then go down from there.
Starting at the top of the list, do whatever it takes to learn what the materials are typically used for and how.
All of these items will be somehow related to other items on the list, as in, orders for roofing shingles will often times be ordered along with roof sheathing and specific types of fasteners.
Make freinds with the cintractors and carpenters you deliver to, and chat them up to glean what knowledge you can. Most guys are happy to talk about their work if they have the time. Kust listen and learn.
If you get the opportunity, sit down and have a beer with them at your local pub. You can learn alt from their stories
>>
>>1123014
The NRLA and the APA have education resources. All the manufacturers of any engineered product have training materials for free , just ask their rep or look them up online and request info.

Call your local planning office and ask them what structural code they use. Then buy the book and read it.

Simson has education materials , so does quikete .

If you sell hard woods then there are other groups that have info.

But you can also learn a lot of the guys around you. If tou dont know about something dont bull shit. Say you dont know. Find some one who does. Then learn from them and retain that knowledge.

Build a good report with your customers. Eventually with enough knowledge and customer service you will be a sales rep.
