This shit is awesome, why did nobody tell me about this sooner?

My plumbing skills are pretty basic, just your typical homeowner stuff, and I have had leaky plumbing under my kitchen sink for several years now. It seems like it always has a slow drip, eventually corrodes, and after 2-3 years, completely fails. I've replaced it all 3 times now.

This time I replaced everything (again) and used some dope on the threads.

HOLY SHIT! NO LEAKS! NO CORROSION! EVERYTHING FUCKING WORKS!

Where have you been all my life, you fucking awesome-sauce dope!

Bought some ancient pantry door at an antique store. Covered in a thick layer of crusted crap but after a light sanding produced these marks. I work with reclaimed stuff frequently and I've seen plenty of planer marks, but what the shit are these squiggles?

They look groovy, man.
>>
>>1140853

Those marks are from a thickness sander...and was run at an angle to the grain, not parallel...

You'll have to resand it, preferably with an orbital...180 to 220 should do fine

It's hard to find good, old US made stuff for sell here in Europe. At least in my country we don't have many yard sales like you guys have there.

old vises are usually solid af, if you can invest some time in refurbishing it. this one is being sold for about 90€ (which is overpriced imo)

I changed out the switches for my garbage disposal and kitchen light, wired them back up, and now the garbage disposal doesn't tun on. I wired them up how there were previously, am I missing something?

If I remove the jumper from the 20A switch and attach the hot wire directly to it, it will work.

Is the red switch is the disposal?
If both switches are turned on, does the disposal come on?
I
If both are yes, swap the two wires farthest to the right in the pic.
(or move the jumper to the bottom terminal)
>>
>>1140726
The red is the disposal, correct. The disposal stays off regardless of the position of the other switch.

There are actually 4 outlets under the sink, does the disposal have to be plugged into a specific outlet?

Pretty much every Mars mission they say to build a base we need to mine ice and use the atmosphere to make rocket fuel.

What can I use to do similar things on Earth?
No I don't care about rocket fuel, but using the dirt, atmosphere, and water to make things.
>pls not farming
30 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>1140378
Um, well the obvious thing is mining. You can use various rocks to produce cool things. Mars doesn't have an organic layer of dirt so its a lot easier to find important minerals on Mars than it is earth.
>>
>>1140390
Let me give you an example.
In the game space engineers you can put a vent on your ship and then when in atmosphere it can suck in air and fill your tank.

What's the chemical difference between wipe-on polyurethane and brush-on? Can I just use paint thinner or something and get the same effect from a can of standard brush-on?
>>
Just sanded the factory coating off my backup opinel and applied the following:

1 part pine tar
1 part turpentine
1 part boiled linseed oil

Letting it dry and we'll see how it turns out. Supposedly its supposed to be a great coating for tools and gunstocks: nonslip, waterproof and durable.

Alternately, I've heard of replacing the BLO with beeswax, and it sets up like shoe polish.
>>
>>1140281
Yes, you can.
>>1140277
>>1140281
The dirty secret is that for the most part, brands have one oil/resin mix they use for oil-based, and one acrylic/resin mix they use for water-based, and everything else is just repackaged nonsense.

"Salad bowl finish" is the same thing as polyurethane, with different/more solvents to make it smell and feel different. Same with tabletop varnish.

Wiping varnish is just varnish with extra spirits in it. Cut poly with OMS or Naptha and you've got your own.

Some companies have a spar/marine varnish which is typically treated tung instead of linseed as a base, with a better resin. This is worth the extra dime if your project is going to be outside.

Otherwise, pick up General Finishes or Rustoleum poly. Gloss for building coats, then a final coat of whatever sheen you want.

Coats are built with gloss because varnish is naturally glossy. Like with paint, to achieve lesser sheen, dampeners are added and adhesive properties are lessened. Neither of these traits are desirable.

All poly is food safe. Raw Tung and raw linseed oil are edible, but drop to food safe when dry. Shellac is the opposite - denatured alcohol is literally poisoned grain alcohol (to get around alcohol tax). Once dry, Shellac is edible, but it's not waterproof and repairing dings is a bitch. (Really the only reason shellac is even still around is so guys can jerk off to their incorrectly applied French polishes.)

If you're going to break the bank with varnish, get Epifanes Marine Varnish. If not, General Finishes or Rustoleum poly, or Pure Tung Oil, or fuck it even BLO is nice, honestly. It gets a lot if shit BC of how cheap it is, but it does the job well.

Has anyone heard of or gone magnet fishing?

It's when you attach a magnet to a rope and throw it and drag it though lakes/ponds/rivers.

I want to try this, What type of magnet would work best to pick up maybe 3-10 pounds?

I was thinking of doing it at the Detroit river to see how many stolen cars I get snagged on or murder weapons I pull up, Will probably keep the police busy the good part of the day and have some fun too.

I have a couple of 3-pin fans in my computer an I'm annoyed that they are always running at full speed as my Mainboard doesn't have voltage control.

After a bit of search I found this simple circuit that uses the motherboards PWM signal to switch the fan on/off using a MOSFET, which seems reasonable to me.

Simple enough, I could probably build that for 1-2€, but am I missing something here?

I mean what does this much more complex circuit [1] to instead, when the same thing could be achieved with only 3 parts?

circuit [1] isn't that much more complicated. It just uses other parts and needs a smaler transistor to switch the mosfet also probably some filtering in there.
>>
>>1140057
well you could do it with 1 part, put a resistor in v+
>>
>>1140072
This. Make it a rheostat if you want speed control.

Hey guys and gals! Trying to at least get an educated guess on the amp draw of a 24 v DC motor. It's out of an old fart scooter. There is no nameplate on the motor itself. It has 2 12 GA wires running into it. I don't know enough about motors on DC to even guess. If anyone needs more info just tell me what you need. It's approximately 6 inches long and 3 3/4 thick not including the gearbox.

>>
Does the scooter list how many amps the batteries have... and how long they should be able to run it? Could probably Cludge backwards from there..
>>
55 Ah @ 24v. Range of 13 miles. It doesn't list a top speed so I am thinking 4 MPH? If that's the case 55 Ah spread over 3.25 hrs approx 17 amps. Figuring 2 of those for the complex ass lights and controls and 2 motors, 7.5 amps? Shit I have no idea if I'm even close.
>>
>>1139892
Your best bet is to look for any identifying markings and hope you can match a part number. Motor ratings are pretty nebulous either way since they are limited by temperature.

The exact amount of current the motor will draw depends on its load, and the load it can withstand depends on the ambient temperature and how long you want it to run.

I found this very old, "K7" jointer type plane at an antique store for $20.

I bought it because even though it looked unsalvageable and rusty, I saw that the quality of the machining on it was significantly better than the vintage Stanley Bailey No. 4 and No. 5 planes that I have seen.

First job was to take it apart and get rid of the rust.

The lever cap is broken. I have a spare No. 5 cap though. Even though it's 2" wide as opposed to 2 3/8" I think the smaller cap will work just fine.

The blade and chipbreaker are just too far gone man. I ordered a Veritas replacement set from Lee Valley, made from PM-V11 steel. The cost of the blade is 4x more than the rest of the plane.

I started taking it apart and started chucking the pieces in the dishwasher to get rid of all the crud on the parts. When I uncscrewed the frog I was surprised to see that the frog and plane bases were machined flat, with grooves and a step machined into them so that the two pieces make a solid fit. Much much better than the Stanleys I have. I think this plane is an ancient ripoff of the Stanley Bedrock-series plane.

Anybody have a good relatively cheap means of sharpening knives and axes? I've been blacksmithing for a few months now but I never finish any projects cause Im not sure if i should get a belt grinder, which tends to be pretty expensive, or just get a grinder power tool.

This link shows you how you can build something out of wood and a few other things. First you use a file on the guide rod to get the general bevel and then you move to free hand stones or long stones to fit on this, hell I bet you can make a wood block to attach wet/dry sand paper to if you don't have stones

Hi I've got a Samsung j110f that has extremely poor wifi reception when standing right next to routers, it happens with all the routers and other Samsung phones work correctly when tested with same routers. I checked on google and some pages said to check he connection from the wifi receiver unit. How do I identify the wifi receiver unit and how do I test the connection. Ps a software upgrade or reset does not solve the problem. It is running android 4.4.4

The wifi module is soldered onto the board and from the sounds of it you aren't skilled enough or have the tools to do it. With that being said your problem is more likely to be the antenna connection. Look for some cables in your phone. The wifi chip will usually look like a big silver-ish square made for absorbing high heat

I see a lot of aimless posts on /diy/, the "i have garbage, can i make it into something" or the "i want to make something, but i have no tools, or supplies, what do" posts.

Sometimes we just want to see some beautiful stuff made by expert craftsman. Can /diy/ give some expert playlists or channels to show the possibilities out there? show the potential of what can be done in a garage or in someones spare time?

I'll start us with clickspring. He's a master at what he does, I have no interest in becomin ga machinist, nor do I want to machine brass into a clock like this, but god damn is it amazing to watch.
