What multimeter does /diy/ use around the clock? The harbor freight one I have been using has been doing somewhat well, but is inaccurate and has a cracked case. Are the flukes as good as people say, or are they just shills?
they are good but really only worth it if it's making you money and even then it's very likely some fuck will eventually steal it. i mainly use Klein, work good and are priced reasonably
>>1152920
This.
I actually personally use a bunch of cheap shitty jameco/rshack ones, but for work we have a Klein.
Currently a €15 aldi DMM because they had it on sale and I needed one fast. Planning on getting a Brymen BM235 in the near future.
Fluke seems like the gold standard but overpriced as fuck.
Hey /diy/ I'm closing on a house in a few weeks and my first project is building a nice tall wood fence so he can run around all he wants. Any tips for helping the project go smoothly/things I need to plan for or watch out for?
Get a level.
Who is he?
>>1151373
It's for my dog. Meant to include that.
Who else here is interested in obsolete tech?
I'm obsessed with these things, constantly build radios, amplifiers, and have a couple hundred weird tubes to play with.
Might have a go with some of the car audio shit that's only rated for 16V max plate voltage and cook them at 50V for fun. Just gotta finish my protoboard.
Not to mention some are pretty neat to pull apart.

I wish my Phillips tube radio were that clean and simple. Haven't done anything

Please post criticism and suggestions, /diy/ seems to get a lot of radio related questions and seems to have quite a few hams, a general amateur radio thread might be good.
I posted so many questions in the last thread that I felt obligated to help set up the new one!
I finally got my license a week ago, I was thinking that there was no one out there. But then I hooked up a home made antenna to my oscilloscope and noticed that when I transmitted the carrier signal was not being modified. The little baofeng I had was just sending out Carrier wave DX .
So I soldered a few connections together to tie the outside mic and inboard mic. BAM I got it working and made my very first contact today! And not just one, as soon as I started talking I found out there are TONS of people out there just waiting to talk. All very friendly and helpful. Told me my baofeng was putting out crystal clear now that I fixed it up.
I'm very excited about this new hobby. Cant wait to get my IC 740 set up next month!

Hello all, i have a Triangle Tube Prestige Solo 60 water boiler that keeps locking out due to failure to ignite. Does anyone know if it's possible to manually ignite a system that uses electrical ignition (or will i blow up my house that way) or is there another way to get the damn thing to start. I got gas going to the stove, and the boiler smells like its got gas going to it. What do i do in this situation? Thanks
Lock out occurs after three failed attempts to light, if it is lighting, but not staying on there is a small rod in the path of the flame, is the flame sensor, it can get caked with soot, clean that and you're golden. If it is actually failing to ignight, then either the board or the ignighter is bad, do you know if it is a glow ignighter or a spark?
>>1158465
It is not lighting, i believe it is a spark igniter from what the manual says. I have no clue where to remove and check the igniter itself on this thing, manual doesnt show in the diagrams. Will attach more pictures so someone can guess where the assembly is
Hey /g/, recently I took apart an old copy machine that I found and one of the things I got out of it was this stepper motor. I'm definitely not an electronics expert, but I've been trying to learn more and get into tinkering recently.
How would I go about utilizing this motor, and the 5 pin connector? I have a raspberry pi I can use as a controller but how do I go about connecting the two? Since there's a circuit board already attached to it does that mean that it already has some kind of controller? What additional components do I need? Also can anyone tell me what the pins are for based on the labels? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
>>1157204
look up the controller on the board for the datasheet and trace the signals
>>1157204
If it's five pins it's a unipolar. You need a ULN2803 and your arduino programmed to cycle the coils correctly. This might take a little trial and error.
My skateboard fell in a canal during a skateboard trip. The water is about 3m deep, but it is some dirty city canal. Any ideas on how the skateboard could be recovered?
>>1156029
Maybe like a snorkel, or hold your breath kiddo, that's all for free, or go all teddy from bobs burgers and put an end of a garden hose on shore, other end in your mouth, it's only 3 metres
Contact you city's authorities and tell them someone fell there, then when the divers arrive tell them that if they found a skateboard it's yours.
Disclaimer: an hefty fine my come with your skate.
>>1156029
>3m deep in shit
if you know EXACTLY where it is, i.e. water is clear and you can see it, you can try throwing a big metal hook on a paracord to hook it up
if you don't know where it is you can still try, but the chances of getting it in any reasonably time is minimal because you will have to cover every square inch of the area
but in the process you will hook up loads of literal shit and rubbish
not worth the effort if just a skateboard
I am an incurable nocturnal owl, and am most insatiably productive at night.
There's nothing I would love more than to do some fucking woodworking at 2am without any distractions, jam to some music and make noise that no normal person wants to hear between the hours of 9pm to 9am.
I suspect noise dampener foam wouldn't cut shit coming out of a jointer and table saw. What are ways to make this dream come true? Are we talking a basement two/three floors deep? Some shanty out in the country with like 7 acres of wilderness?
Anyone else with their wires a little screwy have a similar dream of a truly 24 hour workshop?
Do you live in a big city?
Chicago has 1 woodshop i know of, fully kitted, 24 hrs, 15 hrs/wk $115/mo. 40 hrs/wk 300+/mo
theres also one a them "maker spaces" thats 40-80/mo and thats 24hrs a day. takes time to get "cleared" to use machinery/tools b/c no one knows wtf is going on there
Yeah I've loved the same idea for a while man, I had friends in college that lived on farms and shit, could do that shit at like 4 AM nobody would give a shit. I'd say moving out in the middle of buttfuck nowhere is your best bet, that's just me though
Get cindernlock garage/shop to work in and make sure you aren't 20ft away from your neighbors. So long as you have good ventilation and keep the doors shut you shouldn't really bother anyone by the time the sound travels through your bricks and your neighbors house. I'd also suggest getting high quality tools or retrofitting your tools with induction motors to keep down the noise from shitty universal motors that they put in everything nowadays. Really the bricks are your best friend since they are cheap and heavy so the will absorb and stop low frequencies that would annoy a neighbor.
Need help printing the right size on this orchidometer first attempt resulted in testicle model about the size of an extra extra large egg, think ostrich, second resulted in very small representation about one inch length much smaller probably on fifth of actual testicle size. Please pardon my ignorance but how do i set it to average testicle height of 25mm=16ml volume have access to print lab and what program will i use or website. thank you in advance!

In all 3d program you can set the unit to either inches or millimetres...
I had some sheet vinyl laid over some luan plywood that was not adequately affixed to the concrete beneath it.
It bowed and you hear and feel it slapping the concrete when you step on it.
Vost me about $1,000 for the Kitchen and bathroom materials and labor.
Any chance the sheet can be taken up without ripping it?
There is at least one corner accessible with some of the sheet not adhered.
can I possibly start there and carefully with maybe a putty knife or something get this stuff up intact so i don't have to sue anybody to pay for replacing it and I can screw down that luan better?
maybe get a vinyl blade and very carefully take it all up. I really think it will be hard. you will have to be very delicate with it.
once you get it up will you have to fix the board and then carefully place it all back down.
>>1157883
Heat gun? Doubt you'll save the vinyl though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV5PCvSjun0
Your installer should have just skimcoated the concrete to level it. Putting luan over concrete is retarded.
I work for a solar company doing repairs and maintenance. I get to the house to install animal guard to prevent squirrels and start cleaning it out. To make a long story short there's about 4 squirrels under the array that I jabbed at with a flat bar. Any ideas how to get the out /diy/?
>>1157623
Probably just walk your ladder closer to their nest and poke them again and see if they scatter.
Heres up close of the nest. I started cleaning it out and saw 2 more run under after I already had heard some. Figured the noise alone would share them, then stabbed under the array with a pry bar and felt it hit one. They aren't leaving so I left. Just curious
>>1157624
It's right in front of it. I poked at them for a while, even went to the top with a stick of 1" PVC and no dice. Ballsy little fuckers
I got a free solar panel and want to use it to supply off-the-grid electricity to a small portion of my house. Here's my setup so far.
And here's the problem. The voltage coming out of the battery bank starts off at about 12.8v but drops very rapidly after only a few seconds of running a 350w space heater on the connected inverter. It takes about 10 seconds before the voltage reaches 10v, the inverter turns off due to what it thinks is a depleted battery, and then the voltage from the battery jumps back up to about 12.8v.
What gives? Did I fuck up my batteries' capacity through improper charging?
>>1157453
Your batter can't run a 350w space heater most likely. That's 30 amps, not counting any loses.
You may want to think about doing the new grid tie thing. Where the inverted electricity gets back fed into the house, but you need special stuff so if the power goes out it stops working and doesn't kill a lineman.
>>1157590
> You may want to think about doing the new grid tie thing. Where the inverted electricity gets back fed into the house, but you need special stuff so if the power goes out it stops working and doesn't kill a lineman.
I have a 3.3Kw grid-tied system on the roof already. That is not the purpose of this extra panel.
> Your batter can't run a 350w space heater most likely. That's 30 amps, not counting any loses.
But what's the solution? Shorter and thicker cables?
>>1157593
First you should figure out where your losses are.
I am a GC super. I have some halo ml56 lights left over from a recent project. I wanted to install them in my kitchen in place of my existing incandescent cans. I have the screw in pigtails, so it should be a simple swap, but the lights will not power up. I tried several different units (in case of a faulty one) and tried in different known outlets. I verified voltage at the pigtail. Still no lights. Could all the ml56 lights I have be bad? Seems unlikely. Or is there a secret?
no sparkys around?
>>1157476
Yes but I don't use Halo. When you say verified voltage at the pigtail do you mean at the orange connector? Some of those adapters you have to screw in very tight to get connection.
>>1157482
>When you say verified voltage at the pigtail do you mean at the orange connector?
yes, checked voltage at the orange connector with a meter.
I was looking around my old room yesterday and found my old PSP (Model 3001 if that matters). The battery was expanded and would no longer fit into the compartment on the back, and shoving it in harder / charging made no difference. My battery type is pic related, I've already taken it apart. I was following a few tutorials to make it run off of 3 AAA batteries, but I can't tell the difference between the Positive and Negative terminals on the battery controller board. They're labled LD1 and LD2. Any advice?

Multimeter will tell you for sure.
ive always wanted a mill and lathe for doing random projects you just cant do with other tools.
these are my requirements:
>not a mini/micro machine
>not a 70 year old industrial 3 phase machine that weighs more than my car (...yet)
>not a combo machine (ie pic related)
>not chinesium/harborfreightium if at all possible
>little to no proprietary accessories or bullshit (if thats even a thing)
>2500-3000 max for both
>quality cnc kit available is a good bonus
ive been looking at grizzly mostly, they have a good selection within my price range. i have some questions in general though;
>for lathes, does it make a big difference between a .75 and 1hp motor?
>for mills, does it make a big difference between a .75 and 1 and 2hp motor?
>is it better to have a belt driven variable speed lathe/mill or a multi fixed speed gearbox lathe/mill?
>is dro something i should be picky about getting or is it not really worth the cost?
>is there anything else i should take into consideration like spindle tapers or number of feeds or other small things that the average layman may overlook?
also general metalworking/shaping thread as well to help give this thread a little more substance.
>>1157311
I had a look at a chinky lathe a friend wanted to buy. From memory a 230 x 500mm benchtop lathe. first thing I noticed when testing it out was that the tailstock sat about 30 thou too high. unbolted the tailstock and the bottom of it looked like a fucking cheesergrater, rough as fuck machining with lots of chatter.
> just buy a secondhand machine and research handscraping, you'll get a hell of a lot more enjoyment out of rebuilding and using old American and English iron than you will from a chink machine.
>>1157311
where to cop a desktop mill/lathe for a reasonable price for an almost-poorfag
>>1157335
This. I could be wrong, but I was thinking everything Grizzly sells, definitely the small less expensive stuff, will have been tempered with soy sauce.
