Okay, this is a question for the audiophiles/musicians out there; I thought /diy/ would yield better troubleshooting results than /mu/.

I have a master album that I'm preparing to downsample for a CD version. I'm going from 96khz/24bit to 44.1khz/16bit, and I'm changing the file type from .wav to .aiff.

I've downsampled using itunes and audacity, and in both cases, the resulting files are at different max decibel levels than their masters. For example, all my master tracks are at -0.6db but the converted tracks can get to -0.2db or even clip at 0.0db.

How do I fix this? Is it a matter of keeping the file type the same?

pic unrelated.

Make your master a little bit quieter, until you get your desired db level in the downsampled versions.

No, your original file is not at -.6dB; the loudest sample is. Peaks can occur between samples. That's why all good peak meters oversample.

This is the base of my laptops charger. The actual bit that connects the male end to the power cord.

I've never done any kind of repair before myself so I'm not a good judge of what should be done.

Would I be able to fix this with a soldering iron? Do I need additional material?

Probably buy a new plug, cut back the wire to get rid of anything damaged. Solder on new plug.
Hardest part is finding a spare matching plug, some laptop supplies have 3 pins in there so the computer can 'talk' to the charger, if so you need one to match.
A multimeter might be useful to check which wire goes where on the old plug once you cut it off, and to check it works before you fry your laptop with out

if that's a mains plug that's removable then try to find a replacement cord but if it's hardwired you can desolder another grounded cord from something and solder it into your charger
just make sure that there isn't an opportunity for it to arc inside of the charger

Back when we were kids in middle school, I was staying the night at my friends house during a really bad
thunderstorm. We were upstairs playing SNES games when lightning hit a power line nearby and knocked the
power out. I remember the whole house lighting up like it was the middle of the day and then the power
just went out.

A lot of the electronics in the house were ruined, including the SNES and the TV, which pissed my friend
off pretty badly as his parents couldn't replace the system until after all the insurance BS was sorted
out.

His parents had an old Radio Shack TAD 1006 answering machine (one of the early digital models) and it
was fried, too. There were some important messages from his grandparents that he had wanted to keep on
there since they had passed away earlier that year, which really bummed him out that he'd lost those
messages.

Yeah, well, anyway, they'd sent the machine off to someone who was good with electronics to try to fix
the machine but he ended up skipping town (for some unrelated reason) and the answering machine was never
returned after that.

Last year my friend asked me if I remembered that night and I said of course, that's when your SNES and
stuff got fried from lighting. He told me that the guy who skipped town had his house go up for sale as
some point and, long story, but my friend ended up getting that old answering machine back.

We have another mutual friend who's into electronics and he volunteered to take a crack at maybe getting
the data off the memory chips in the machine using a Raspberry Pi. He was able to do it but he didn't
have much luck getting anything useful out of the memory dump.

We thought it might be worthwhile to see if anyone else
with better computer skills can make any sense of it.

> A lot of the electronics in the house were ruined...

It really pisses me off when people throw out an entire house of electronics because of a power surge. Most things that plug into the wall have a fuse on the PCB somewhere. It will blow in a power surge and protect the rest of the unit from damage. Your friend could have probably saved all his equipment with a soldering iron and a dollar of parts.
>>
>>1156764
>Most things that plug into the wall have a fuse on the PCB somewhere. It will blow in a power surge and protect the rest of the unit from damage.

>lightning strike
Most electronic devices are damaged by the surge before the fuse blows.
>>
>>1156764
Fuses are not made for protecting against surges, they would blow after the voltage has risen so far already that a multiple of the standard current is running for a prolonged period, meaning the internals will be fried long before the fuse blows. Fuses exist to prevent fire after an internal short causing too much current to be drawn. There are devices able to protect against surges, but most of the times lightning strikes are still powerful enough to obliterate the boldest of measures. Infrastructure is way more important for protection against lightning, a time ago I witnessed a strike into a TV distribution device, and no appliances were friend in the neighborhood, even the digital tv decoders were intact, and more impressive: that same night internet and tv were fixed again.

How do I order wood from a timber yard?

I know what SAWN and PAR mean, I know you measure timber in 3 dimensions. Its just when I go to the website of my local 'yard, there are all these categories I haven't a clue about. Scaffold board? Strength graded timber? Carcassing? Treated?

I just want to a stock of wood to make things. A garden bench. A work table. A bed frame.
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It would help if I posted the site in question, right?
http://www.jewson.co.uk/timber/
>>
>>1156704
"Scaffold board" is specially rated and graded stuff, specifically for the construction of scaffoldings. There are a whole host of specific standards for that, stay away from it unless that is what you are building.

ifaik 'carcassing' is just another way to say framing. General wood thing made of wood.

"strength graded timber" is for a specific purpose, usually meeting some engineering specification that you would know if you needed.

"Treated" is just means something has been done to the wood, usually pressure-cooking it in a preservative / pesticide. Important for outdoor uses. Sometimes there are options like fireproofing treatment.

CLS seems to be the term they are using for general cheap wood. midding to low quality soft wood of fast-growing pine. The boards for the work-bench in the garage or the shelves in the attic. Going up a level would be what they offer as planed square-edge timber. This would probably be the nicer wood that you wouldn't mind someone seeing inside your home, nicer boards for the shelves of a bookcase, that kind of thing.

Making sense?

I'm replacing a 560 ohm resistor on an amplifier, and my local electronics shop only had a 1/2W resistor in stock. If the one on the board is 1/4W (which I think it may be) would doubling the wattage affect the amp in any way?

The board didn't label it, and I couldn't find schematics anywhere online.

I also replaced a 1/2W 220 ohm resistor, and that's what I asked the dude at the store for, but idk if that's what he gave me Becuase of the size. Any way to be sure I have a 1/2 resistor?

Pic related is the two resistors and two transistors I replaced

A diagram of where the resistor goes would be useful. If you're not sure, the question you should ask yourself is if a 10 cent part is worth killing your amp.

How do I transport 4x8 sheets without a pickup truck or a trailer?

I thought about lashing a stack to my car's roof rack until I heard about an instance where a gust of wind caught someone doing the same thing and nearly made the car take flight.
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1156220
That seems unlikely in particular. It wouldn't take flight, the board would snap and become a road hazard.

The solution is to rent a truck or trailer or pay them to deliver them to you.

Hey /diy/ers, I am building a small modular toy, picture attached.

The main driving force will be a rack and pinion that you push down from the top, and kids will place different "sub-toys" in the designated areas.

So far I only came up with a small catapult thing as a sub-toy (as you can see in picture).

Any /diy/ers have any other ideas for small (preferably engineering/mechanical-based) sub-toys that would be powered by a simple rack and pinion gear set?

I will update with pictures of final product when I am done.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a reliable way to send yourself a video from now and receive it in your gmail or something years from now?

Some time ago I saw a thread where it was asked what would your younger self tell your actual self. and it kinda stuck on me that I didn't actually know. So now I'm about to turn 22, last year of college, and want to make a video where I talk about my current situation and what I want to achieve, and also ask myself where did everything go right/wrong, even if I won't get an answer now.

The idea is to then receive it and rewatch it when I turn either 27 or 30, to see how much things changed in those 5-8 years, leading to either a dopamine rush and feeling good for what I got, or a severe depression because my ideals went to shit; both cases most likely ending with rain inside my room.

If I'm still around to see it by then, that is.

Anyway, I did some previous googling, and the only apparently reliable way was to use use an app only available for iOS(only have android phone), and almost none regarding actual, non-mobile methods.

Of course, I could just go the easy way and save the video on a pendrive/SD, store it somewhere safe, and watch it when time's up, but I might end up forgetting or something might happen to it, and then it'll all be for nothing. And I also think it's kinda cooler to receive a mail from your younger self.

Either way, any ideas?

I actually write a diary to my future self in a .txt file describing the date, what's going on currently and what i'm thinking about. It feels a bit "lonely" while writing it DESU. When reading the stuff back 3 years later or so the feeling you get is mostly "oh yeah, i remember that". Would be more useful if there as a way for your future self to write to your present self...

On the subject of time-capsules - i've noticed that the older they are, the more boring they are. Anything before 1900 is usually stuff like dried out plants and old newspapers. At most old photos... Go forward a bit to the 1950's and it gets much more interesting - in 1957 they buried a whole Plymouth car that was intended to be unearted in 2007. As you can see in pic related, they didn't do a great job insulating the concrete capsule, so water managed to leak through.

Hello /diy/
My girlfriend is gone to study abroad this year.
Since we won't be able to be together for christmas, I want to make her an advent calendar.
I don't want the gifts to be overly expensive and overshadow her actual present. It also shouldn't be things that are too big or heavy as I will have to ship the thing and don't want the shipping cost to be insanely high.

Do you have any cute, fun ideas for:
1. Things I could give her
2. Possibly a cute wrapping for the gifts
3. Presentation (for example little burlap sacks with numbers, little notes with numbers on them tied to the gifts etc.)

I will be grateful for any and all ideas and pieces of advice you can give me.

Also:
I know christmas is far away, but I'd rather start preparing too soon rather than too late.
