Is building your own bricks a stupid/hipster thing to do or is it a cost-effective alternative to buying them from a big box store?

I want to build some bricked garden boxes this summer as a fun project but the retail price of bricks is making me shy.

>>
If your time is worthless, sure.
>>
It might be interesting as a side project, like Primitive Technology, but not cost effective.

Don't buy at the home improvement store individual brick prices. Figure out how many you need, plus some padding, and find a brick&masonry supplier in your area.

just get them for free off craigslist

I want to set up my own personal 4chan archive, like 4plebs.

The existing ones often go down, and they only archive boards on the 4chan domain. Personally, I'd like to archive a few more boards, particularly for a few boards I read on other chans (mostly seven ch/tg eight ch /tg/) which I can't find an existing archive for.

Anybody able to point me to the software I'll need, and perhaps an instruction manual?

Literally linked on that page.

Check out bibanon on github. They have an archiver but it only archives threads you specify, and it runs on python. So instead of scraping entire boards you can save threads you like, or just automate it to scrape the boards.
>>
>>1160363
>>1160366
Thanks guys. I dunno how I missed that, and if I could automate it to only backup the kinds of threads I actually read that would be even better. I'll check those out.

Any others?

I have quite an old knife, it's in relatively good shape, with only a bit of dirt and patches of rust. I'd like to restore it to a good or working condition. I don't have much experience with this so any advice would be helpful!!

Dont really know much, money and time isn't really a concern so i should be good to get anything

Alright. A couple things. 1, my hour meter in my loader runs when the key is on for fm radio. Would rather not toggle switch the meter or radio and forget about it all the time.

System is 24v.

A buddy found a nice clarion head unit that is 24v.

24/12 dc/dc inverters for the power i want are kinda high.

Okay, ideally i would like a small amp and subs. Being hard on my ears is a concern but from time to time i do like a little bass when a good song comes on.

How should i wire shit up? Have considered 2 matching 3 or 5 channel amps or a 2 channel and a mono for bass but then they wouldnt match.

Could i just series wire 2 12v amps for a 24v setup?

I have a compartment i can strap a few deep cycle batteries in. Not real worried about the strain on the alternator as i almost never run the lights. And i'm not entering a db drag here...

It also needs removeable quickly. I will be using plugs and quick conects and have a small location in the cab to strap down my bootleg sound system.

Not too worried about the boss finding it. But i would rather keep it a secret. Also, MSHA is a cunt.

Prefer kicker gear and a cheapo walmart head unit for you math fags. Sorry. No multi meter on me and the tag has fallen off of the alternator.

Probablysafe to assume anything you coukd throw ina car u coukd use here. Ive seen stock Hondas with 1,500 watt amps.

May even get shitty comp series gear from there. If it works out i can always upgrade.

Digital amplifiers which can take 24V are easy enough to find.

The drivers will probably blow if they are designed for 12V though, so just put two in series and make a double driver subwoofer.
>>
>>1160273
Had no idea 24 volt was common at all. Thanks. Any recommended brands? Honestly confused as ro why big names like kicker and jl and fosgate dont make deals with CAT and kumatsu and shit... a lot of people soend a lot of time in machines and im done with this little blown out panasonic shit.

Does insulation cause faster brick deterioration?

As I understand it, insulation means exterior bricks never get warm, therefore they are even more exposed to frost/thaw cycles.
21 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
it depends on the insulation water vapor transmission.

Totally air tight insulation can cause condensation to occur on the brick layer and eventually cause deterioration.

Further more it depends on the bricks themselves and the mortar used.
>>
>>1160130
FWIW, what happened in the pic is due to using the wrong mortar.
>>
>>1160838
Could you explain how that happened? I'm curious. I also don't quite understand what's happening in that photo.

What's the best way to fill my robotics parts bin with things that I don't know that I need yet?

This is good advice. Its a good way to learn about mechanisms and assembly. Parting out stuff and organizing parts gets the juices flowing. Looking at parts is a good source of inspiration.

So does anyone else here have a cushy job where they spend 10-20hours a week doing jack? Not necessarily managers, but service guys. Can we start a general AGSTD thread?

We could talk about repairs and shit.

I do food equipment repairs, contactors and Relays, thermostats and reed switches.
I got lucky, a lot of this shit helps with household repairs, so basic 120 is cake when you're used to 480.

Has anyone been shocked by anything above 240? How good does it feel?

Sounds nice. What specifically do you do?

Found this old char-broil gas grill in the storage closet, I've been craving charcoal grilled burgers so I'm wondering how safe it is for me to convert it.
7 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
here it is before I removed the gas fixture, the pan section is used in the next pic
>>
and here is how I think I'd use it if there's no concerns. The pan is about an inch away from the bottom, I flipped it over and wedged it down there to create airspace under the coals and to cover those two large openings on the bottom of the grill. The coals would be ~4-5 inches from the grill in this set up. I would put the whole grill on top of a large sheet pan to avoid the embers dropping onto the wooden deck.

the only thing I can figure might go wrong is that the coals get too hot and somehow melt through the bottom, or the grill just doesn't work that well. any thoughts?
>>
Would probably burn shitty unless you put a real grate down there. Not enough airflow.

I need to remove this oil pan bolt to drain my tiller oil but it's become so worn the 12mm ratchet slips. I've tried vice grips planning to just replace it, but they don't work.

Anyone know of a tool that will grip this so it can be removed?

>Anyone know of a tool that will grip this so it can be removed?
Vice grips.
Used by someone who has enough hand strength to clamp them on without slipping
>>
>>1159410
Before you do that you should make sure it's not standard instead of metric.
>>
>>1159410
yeah vise grips will work, are you adjusting the knob on the end so it bites firmly into the head?

...if that doesn't work hammer a imperial box end wrench between the metric sizes onto the head and turn

Long time lurker here. I have an issue-
So I'm looking to true some stock and everything, they taught us in school that you need a joiner, thickness plane, etc.
Just wondering if there's a kind of cheaper equivalent, I have access to a solid amount of tools, from table saws to ice saws, I just lack a joiner and thickness plane- thanks lads

>>1159357
You can use hand planes.. But it just takes a long ass time. Especially if you have a shit wood that likes to blow out or has lots of knots.

I need to get a thickness planer myself too. Sucks not having one.
>>
you're fucked
>>
>>1159359
Hand planes? Is there a way I can ensure it will be square?

Redpill me on Shapeoko 3.
What's the catch? Gonna bite the bullet and after some research I'm leaning towards the Shapeoko 3. My intent is to carve some wood and SO3 seems like the best bet.
Anyone actually own one? Any problems? Any other CNC Router owners welcome to make me change my mind.

The catch is that it flexes everywhere.

Some improved designs that descend from it are the X-CARVE and the OX.
>>
>>1159457
First time I heard about OX. They say it's strong but I can't find too many videos of tests etc.
>>
You can probably build a better one yourself for that kind of money, or the same thing for half the price, maybe even less. It's a pretty half-assed design.

quite probably it's silicone, yes.
it's quite harmless and easy to handle, but you need a mold to pour it into.

Hey /diy/ I'm looking at a new apartment that doesn't have an in unit washer a dryer, and I can't stand waiting for openings at communal ones anymore. So this new place has a walk in closet right next to the bathroom, and I was thinking what I could do is cut out a hole through the wall between the closet and the bathroom and then connect the washer hoses to the pipes under the sink.

Does this seem feasible? I'm not worried about making a hole in the apartment wall since they will be in not very visible spots and patching drywall is easy enough, but I've never had to cut such a sizable hole through one side of a hole and out the other.

Anyone have any advice on this? Any completely new ideas on getting a washer and dryer into an apartment with no hookups?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1158693
well maybe before you go smashing holes in walls have a look at where the pipes go to/from the sink.
if they pass under the closet floor then you might not need to make a hole in the wall at all.

consider carefully the requirements for especially any drain hoses so it doesn't syphon dirty water and shit everywhere. check and electronic copy of the manual of the appliance online before you buy it if you haven't already.

but yeah i would be bashing the hole already before asking here lol.

if you are renting you will want to consider asking someone first though? do you know there is nothing in the wall you are going to hit? cables? gas pipe? don't trust those scanner detector things they are shit.

Our landlord said we weren't allowed to put a washing machine upstairs as the floor of the upstairs toilet aren't waterproof. So we have it in the basement. Which is cool as it started to leak and upstairs that would have been a serious problem.
>>
Where/how are you going to vent the dryer?
