I have some military surplus parachute buckles that I want to darken. The v-rings have an almost gold patina in color, but I'd like them to be darker.
I don't want to rust them out. Is there a good method for darkening them?

fairly certain theres only 2 ways to change an alloys color/shade:

Paint and heat

what heat does for color depends on the alloy being used I think, but it also effects the strength and durability of the metal as well, so not a great option.

*i could be wrong and there might actually be ways to alter the colors/shades of alloys, but I don't think so.
>>
>>1167182
Hmmm. What about chemicals?
A vinegar mix or even Black Oxide Phosphate?
I know that over time these do darken (seen them in old cargo bays) just looking to give time a helping hand.
>>
>>1167192
yes, hydrogen peroxide will create a black patina on it that is changing the metal itself

I have 15 UV LEDs and I want to make a UV flashlight. What is the best circuit to make them all work efficiently?
The forward voltage is 3.5 volts, so it would take 4xAA batteries and 15 resistors to make them work.

I'm looking for a circuit (maybe with a dedicated IC) that can step up the voltage and drive 15 UV LEDs from a low voltage like 2x AA batteries.
>>
>>1167010
Personally I'd just run them all from as many Li-Ions in parallel as you wanted with a little dropper-resistor, probably just a single 18650, but if you want to use 2 AAs, maybe a joule-thief would work? It's probably the simplest circuit, but definitely not the most ideal. Since you're considering dedicated control circuits I can assume that you'll want something more sophisticated, to which I'd suggest buying one of those <$2 chinesium boost/buck/whatever converters from AliExpress or ebay. I'm not sure if dedicated LED drivers work at such voltages.

Have you done some wattage calculations to ensure two AAs can keep up? They should unless you've got particularly bright LEDs, but you never know.

As an architecture student, my wet dream is to own a laser cutter. Making models with parts cut by a laser is so enjoyable, fast, cheap in terms of materials, and fail proof. But 1K€ even for small, kickstarted projects, this I can't afford.

I still want one, so I spent the last few months wandering on the internet trying to gather as much informations I could off youtube, forums, reddit threads, etc. First thing I did was asking myself "what do u wanna cut bro?", and I answered "Dude, cardboards n shit" I think i now have a pretty clear understanding of how to build and operate a chassis with 2 axis. I already own (and learned the basics of) an arduino, on which I plan to mount an A4988, driving two NEMA 17 Steppers (57 oz/in). I have a lot of ideas for the design itself. But I got the feeling I need to get to the core of the problem first: how hard is it to make a laser cutter?

I have read somewhere that Laser Diodes, even properly focused will not cut anything more than thin paper, and are more suited for engraving. I read pretty much everywhere that CO2 laser tubes are the best options if you plan to cut something stronger.

But everytime I look at a CNC CO2 laser machines, I get terrible headaches. Considering we use a laser housed in a glasse tube with a CO2 tank and a vacuum pump, that shoots a deadly laser on 3 (at least) successives gold plated (for examples) mirrors, and then needs to be aligned to somewhat end up in a small lens to get focused, I see so many things that can end up going really bad if not fully mastered.

But I see a lot of DIY CNC machines that use those tubes without problems. Maybe i'm too anxious? Idk.

TL;DR: I want a 2 axis laser cutter CNC to cut cardboards and thin wood/plywood. (How original! :kappa:). Already confident with motors/linear motion/electronics problematic. I read that what I need is a C02 laser tube.

Here are my questions:

*I have no idea how to determine what the power should be, but I guess I can't take a too powerful one since all i have to do is run it on lower power.

*Is there any good build log/guide/tutorial available to understand the basics of CO2 lasers, the safety ofc (again i'm so scared of lazors), and most importantly how to assemble precisely and effectively the mirrors/lens, etc?

*(Ok, Maybe I should have asked this one first) do I really Need CO2 Tube? I feel like a classical laser diode would be so much cheaper and safer regarding the overall build, but I guess 20W or 40W laser diodes don't exist. :/

(Also, pic is what i'd like, a laser diode machine, not a CO2 laser tube one.)
>>
>>1166158
Student don't usually own a machine because 1. expensive 2. lots of time to set up properly, if you think your model will outweigh the cons then do it but 99.999% it is not worth the time unless your design is also amazing.

Power level are often achieved by trial and error which is part of the set up process. You put different stuff to test the levels.

Safety is not an issue if you buy the machine, it comes with cover. Wear a goggle if you are too scared.

Lens I don't know, if it is a focus thing then it is usually just turning a knob, or setting distances.

If CO2 tube is what people use then yeah. I mean, you are not reinventing the wheel here, just buy a machine and read the instructions.

As architecture student I don't imagine you have nearly enough time for all this dicking around but that is another topic.
>>
If you really spend the time and money, people who did this usually also run a small business and sell your service to other students to make the most out of it. Your own project is not going to have enough jobs for the machine.

Hey /diy/ers,

I've made a small charcoal foundry before, but here is my new design, please tell me if its possible.

I have 100% of the material with me, I just wanted to ask before i construct...

Th long tube would hous either a hairdryer or a leafblower to pump air very fast. That little attachment to the main tube will be a container filled with 99% Isopropyl Alchol (of which my job throws away waste IPA in the gallons per day).

It will have a little nozzle so that I can control the amount of alcohol going into the main melting chamber.

Everything would be welded or such.

Let me know what you guys think!

What's stopping the flame from burning where the air and the alcohol meet instead of in the foundary?

Also seems dangerous unless you have a check valve preventing the flame from going into your tank of alcohol

My waste oil burner is like that.

You want to slope the air pipe downwards a bit, so if oil leaks it goes into the furnace - rather than down the blower.

>>1171187
the air is gonna be traveling very fast, but I mean the alcohol can directly feed into the chamber rather than the pipe

Hi /diy/,

the situation is: It is possible that I'm going to inherit a 1900m2 property with a huge (~20 rooms) and old house build on it. (built around 1650). The complete frontage is under monument protection. Most of the rooms have some stucco on the walls and the ceiling. It also has a vaulted cellar. I guess refurbishing the whole house will cost millions, since it has to be done by experts. Or I could just leave it as it is, and replace one thing at a time. Which would be a neverending story. The good thing is, that there isn't any monument protection inside. But thats only because no responsible authority has ever seen it.

Would /diy/ accept the inheritance?

Parts of the exterior plaster fall down every now and then. I don't think that this will get any better in the near future. And if I want to fix that, I do need to let this get verified by experts from the city council. I'm sure they want to check the whole thing in that case.

Came here to say this. TS8000 has a larger flame than most blowtorches which means it will heat up stuff faster saving you time and gas. It can connect to propane or MAP gas bottles (which burn even hotter than propane.) MAP can be used for brazing aluminum so if you don't have access to a TIG welding machine then you can still weld aluminum. For example I have an aluminum jon boat. When a rivet leaks I use my TS8000 with MAP gas to heat the area up to 700 degrees. Then I use an aluminum brazing rod to melt some aluminum around rivet. It's a literal weld once cooled and it never leaks again. TS8000 ftw

Okay, so I am not at all happy with this stuff. I've bought it twice, and both times the pink component has turned into chewing gum within 6 months. Everything that I can find tells me that the shelf life should be AT LEAST a year. The second one gummed up after 4 months - and this was after I had taken precautions to store it in a cool, dark, etc. area.

What can I use instead of this that isn't too expensive and can reproduce fine (<2mm) details? I don't want a putty since the part is reasonably fragile and the putty wouldn't get in all the crevices.

>>1170279
You're fulla shit; they warn you in the directions that the clock's ticking when you uncork the bottles. A year's being really optimistic with Oomoo; 6 months is realistic. Smooth on does sell trials of mold max, but you need to use a vacuum degasser for that stuff.
>>
>>1170366
Alright, how about the second question then: Is there anything in comparable price and quality that I can use instead? The next-priced things I can find either need vacuum degassers or are 2-3x the cost per weight.
