yeah yeah, long time lurker here I know, ANOTHER sound proofing thread...

one of my roommates that lives across the hall from me is gonna have a baby. [not mine] and while I've tried many different ways of getting her to leave nothing has worked.. yes even asking her if she would move out. anyway the baby is due in a couple of months and I'm preparing myself for a shit storm of noise. the room mate already isn't that quite always blasting the TV, or music.

Today I installed a Masonite solid core door, an I'm going to add floor stripping and around the jam to make under and around the door air tight. and I'm having carpet installed in both rooms. but the hallway has to remain bullshit click vinyl. I'm gonna install a fluffy rug there over it.

what separates the rooms is a closet actually, so the wall between lets through VERY LITTLE sound. its the door/hall way zone that seems to be letting through most of the sound..

is there something I could hang from the roof, like a hospital track system, but the material instead of being the fabric they use, something that absorbs sound pretty good? so I can effectively create an air-gap. + sound dampening material. I asked if I could build a secondary wall inside the room and was told fuck all no, because it would fuck up the new carpet...

so short of murder, what do?

Why can't you just move out?

rents stupid cheap. like 1 bed 1 bath solo place is 700$/month

2 bed 1 bath. 900$/month

3 bed, 2 bath 1200$/month

ya get it..

I'm paying 150 a month.. and have half a garage for my woodworking tools and projects.. really not gonna find a better deal.

Trust me ive been trying HARD to get her to move the fuck out with her baby daddy, but of course he's a dead beat nig.
>>
>>1173870
Is her name on the rental agreement?

If not, give her 30 days notice to move out.

Yesterday I dug some Thujas [1] out of the garden of my parents. I later learned, that one of these plants can be worth around $2000. I have absolutely zero interest in gardening, but I could imagine putting some pots on my balcony that faces south side, buy small plants for cheap, wait for 5 years and then sell them over the Internet.

What do you think? Is this a worthwhile investment and source of passive/semi-passive income?

Which plant would bring the most money per time, while being low maintenance. Excluding illegal stuff like pot or poppies, obviously.

I've done some research, and apparently Ginseng is one of the most lucrative plants per ft2 to plant. I'm probably going to give that a try.

Anyone else making DIY men's cologne? I bought essential oils, carrier oils, 70% alcohol and glass spray bottles. There are 3 'notes' to any fragrance - top (usually citrus or mint), middle (spice, floral, 1-2 hours), bottom (woods, musk). You can custom-make you own combinations based on the aromas that you prefer.

I bought about 40 essential oil bottles 5-10 cc
grapeseed and jojoba oil, and glass bottles - about $250 USD - might be able to recover some of the cost by selling custom blends to friends for $5/bottle.

How hard is it to work concrete? I want to make a DIY quarter pipe and in theory it doesn't seem complicated or anything.
>build wooden template
>lay rubble and a small amount of dirt as foundations
>lay ~6 inches of concrete-sand mixture
>smooth and let dry
but I have a feeling that it's probably a lot more fiddly and difficult than it sounds...

Hey /diy/ how is it going?
I hope any of you guys can help me with a small but annoying issue.
I have the lens of my sunglasses all fucked up with scratches up to a point that it's noticeable. So do you know if it's possible to fix it? Anyone with first hand experience?

And yes, I googled it, I read that trying to polish it with toothpaste and baking soda may work but I'm afraid it's some bro science and do worse than better.

Any help is very much appreciated, thanks.

Pic is kinda shit but you can see the scratches.

Oh ok, I will wait to see what other anons say.

>ray bans are the same as your typical 2$ chinese sunglasses
It's your opinion and it may be true but the perceived quality are much better when compared to cheap sunglasses. Also the metal inside the plastic gives that nice, heavy feel. But that's not what is in question here so it doesn't really mater.

So, if I bought pic related, could I just hook it up to a simple switch and then a car battery to make a magnet that would crush and injure my hand if I was holding something small and magnetic , like a coin or something?
20 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
what the fuck
>>
>>implying that's how electromagnets work

No.
220 pounds won't crush your hand, and that magnet won't be putting out its full rating unless it's against a large piece of ferrous metal.
>>
Just get an n52 neodymium magnet. A two inch cube would be roughly the same price and strength if I recall. Careful though I myself fucked up my phone messing with one of those, I was like two feet away from my phone and now it's fucked. Also if you put it near a pace maker it sets it to test mode. They are neodymium so they never turn off, but be careful they chip easy.

To answer your question, a coin would not crush your hand, the skin, meat and bone,is way too thick. If that's a 200 lbs magnet a solid chunk of metal in between that and your hand wouldn't be all that uncomforatable. Now if it pinched your skin then youd be fucked.

N52 is also one of the, if not the highest strength natural magnets that aren't electric. Have fun and stay away from electronics, unless it's a crt tv

Moving down south to tornado alley. Found a plot of land in my home town that fell into the hands of someone out of state and they're tired of paying taxes on it. Want to build a home out there.

It's in a high elevation section of the county, so I want to build it out of concrete block then reinforce the cores with poured concrete/rebar to cut down on damage from the wind god's wrath. Is concrete viable over lumber in this situation? Wood would no doubt be cheaper, but being dead really cuts into my bottom line as well. Living underground seems impractical despite all the threads I see about it on this site.

Some of the pros is the lack of insect/fire damage(Which will cut down on insurance costs). No real worries about the water level, as its on a hill.

Concrete with the cells filled is a good way to go, but tornadoes still can rip your roof off. Poured concrete roof is a thing and then it is pretty sweet.
It is expensive. You can also do solid concrete walls by pouring them flat then tilting them up.
Some buildings are made with a roof that is poured on the ground and then jacked up and the walls put underneath it.

Easiest for a owner builder is insulated concrete forms , ICF.
http://bluemaxxbuilders.com/ (for example)
Costs more than concrete blocks but it is a monolithic pour (stronger), easy to shape differently than a cube, and pre-insulated.

I'm a fat fuck (not really, but w/e) who lives with his parents.

They have an oldish NordicTrack A2350 treadmill. They've used it enough that my fat 210 lbs ass can't run on it, when I do the treads studder and feels sluggish/shitty.

I'm considering just buying a new $300-$600 shit tier treadmill but am game for repairing it. Typically what should I be looking for? Is it just an engine problem?

Quick search showed an engine for roughly $330 on amazon.

I feel that an external wrap around porch is necessary. Gives one (human and doggos) space to stroll, smoke, and ponder. Aside from generally extends your sq footage in an already small space... it gives you easy access and a place to tie down/mount pulleys for the storm shutters.

Alternately 'flat roof' it and put a deck up there. It's easier to build (plywood, foam, epm sticky wrap) and you can have a single drain point for greywater collection.

'Railway towers' and 'fire lookout towers' are good inspiration ... plus are old enough to find plans in old books/historical documents.

Hey /diy/. I have this shitty old she'd I want to demolish. I know the proper way to do it is to take it down top to bottom, but I do not have a ladder. I also don't have a truck to pull it down. I do have a sawzall, sledge hammer and prybar. What's the best way to tackle this? I'm thinking of tying it off against a tree in the direction I want it to fall, making 45 degree cuts in the legs slanted downward towards how I want it to fall, and then pulling hard on the ropes with a bro until magic happens. How would /diy/ do it?

See if you have a Tandy or something nearby just to start. Another option is a Boy Scouts of America council/camp store. They tend to be overpriced, so don't go hog wild. Buy a bag of cow scraps, I can get like a pound or so for a couple bucks but I'm sure it varies.
You'll want awls and needles both.
Waxed thread, too.
I'd ask the clerk what they think is appropriate. Patterns and such can be found pretty easy online.
There's a couple folks that frequent here with waaay more experience than me, I'm sure they'll drop in.
>>
>>1171544
Oh, to add to this: don't buy a starter kit. You'll end up with a bunch of shit you won't use yet.
I prefer the 'buy once, cry once' approach, but there's a shitload of different tools for leather, some of which have incredibly specific uses.

Also forgot: you won't need one for like a wallet or whatever, but you'll eventually want a mallet and a stitching pony.

And get a cutting mat. Doesn't have to be a fancy leather specific one, just get a self-healing mat so your wife/mother/grandpa doesn't beat your ass for ruining the coffee table.
I can't be fucked to walk out to my shop, but if I think of anything else I'll add it.
